I originally thought I'd have to order this from the UK....

but it turned out I didn't, so I got it.  Well worth the money, but be warned:  The translation is the British one, where the French is literally translated into British English, hence, a flashlight in the US version becomes a "torch," and apes are constantly referred to as monkeys.  Cornelius and Zira would be quite offended, but otherwise I'm glad I bought it.

Too bad Roddy McDowall didn't record such an effort whilst (Oh, that British!) he was still alive.

He was one of the most visible "character" actors ever, spanning a carreer from the 40's to the 2000's during which he had small roles in just about every TV show imaginable (drama, comedy, western, cop, etc), tons of movies and even "voice" acting. No wonder he had an Ape appearance. Check out his exhaustive IMDB entry. The don't make them like this anymore. He will be missed

Subject: casting ideas for "Dawn of the POTA"
veetus@...
Send Email Send Email

So, the "Dawn of the POTA" script is still a work in progress and who knows
where it will land. Will James Franco, Frieda Pinto or Brian Cox return? I
dunno, but Fox seemed quick to lock down Andy Serkis, and for a terrific salary.
So I don't hold out much hope for the human characters, who would presumably get
a pay raise for returning to a successful franchise. The human characters
weren't exactly celebrated from "Rise". The only actor to say anything was
Frieda Pinto, who said she hadn't heard anything but would love to return.
I'll just say I would love to see the original actors return and expand on
their characters. But I could see where budget would suggest casting new human
characters, and that's where I'm here to help. As we know, there were many
references in "Rise" to the original POTA movies, and they rubbed some fans the
wrong way. So how about some casting that I think POTA fans would enjoy and
which would be more subtle than movie quotes?

Jackie Earle Haley: He, of course played Kraik in "The Legacy" episode of the
POTA TV show. I would love to see him return to the POTA universe 40 years
later. This is not pie in the sky. He's had an incredible time the last few
years, getting an Oscar nomination, working for directors like Scorsese,
Spielberg and, yes, Burton. Come on, his recent casting is for the "Robocop"
remake. It's time for Jackie to come home. If it's possible, he should return to
the POTA.

Katee Sackhoff: Who? She played Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in the recent
"Battlestar Galactica". I LOVE that series and have it on blu-ray. But that's
not what I'm talking about. The main creative force on that series (at least
from the writing) was Ronald D. Moore, who after a decade working on "Star Trek"
episodes, was ready for the anti-"Trek". Of course, in the '60's, POTA was the
anti-Trek. As it turns out, Moore is a big POTA fan and sprinkled POTA refs in
his "Battlestar". But mainly, in the episode "Sometimes A Great Notion",
"Starbuck" is referred to as the "Harbinger of Death", a direct POTA reference
when she discovers >CENSORED!< . And when she's looking for her destiny in the
same episode, she's told, "You may not like what you find". So, come on! If the
"Harbinger of Death" has no place in the new POTA movies, then there is no God.
Did I say that?

Both of those are not just stunt casting. I have been blown away by their
acting and I'm sure if they did a role in "Dawn of the POTA" they would rock.
Besides that, I think it would be fun if they were cast. So those are my ideas.
It would be interesting to hear yours (let's be realistic; no Clint Eastwood or
Bruce Willis).

Is it said anywhere in either Planet or any of the other films that Taylor's mission was the first mission to another star? Heston says it on the voiceover of the NATO video but I can't find anywhere in the actual film where this is stated.

Why is this important?

Brad Pitt is said to have stated PLANET is his favorite movie (at least when he was a kid).  Fox should have gotten him instead of Franco, but Pitt would have cost too much.

Hey, isn't it about time for some news from Fox on how this project is progressing?  I still expect another writer to be brought in, but I also expect production start news by at least November.  I just wonder if this is still on track for a May 2014 release?

Subject: [pota] casting ideas for "Dawn of the POTA"

So, the "Dawn of the POTA" script is still a work in progress and who knows where it will land. Will James Franco, Frieda Pinto or Brian Cox return? I dunno, but Fox seemed quick to lock down Andy Serkis, and for a terrific salary. So I don't hold out much hope for the human characters, who would presumably get a pay raise for returning to a successful franchise. The human characters weren't exactly celebrated from "Rise". The only actor to say anything was Frieda Pinto, who said she hadn't heard anything but would love to return.
I'll just say I would love to see the original actors return and expand on their characters. But I could see where budget would suggest casting new human characters, and that's where I'm here to help. As we know, there were many references in "Rise" to the original POTA movies, and they rubbed some fans the wrong way. So how about some casting that I think POTA fans would enjoy and which would be more subtle than movie quotes?

Jackie Earle Haley: He, of course played Kraik in "The Legacy" episode of the POTA TV show. I would love to see him return to the POTA universe 40 years later. This is not pie in the sky. He's had an incredible time the last few years, getting an Oscar nomination, working for directors like Scorsese, Spielberg and, yes, Burton. Come on, his recent casting is for the "Robocop" remake. It's time for Jackie to come home. If it's possible, he should return to the POTA.

Katee Sackhoff: Who? She played Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in the recent "Battlestar Galactica". I LOVE that series and have it on blu-ray. But that's not what I'm talking about. The main creative force on that series (at least from the writing) was Ronald D. Moore, who after a decade working on "Star Trek" episodes, was ready for the anti-"Trek". Of course, in the '60's, POTA was the anti-Trek. As it turns out, Moore is a big POTA fan and sprinkled POTA refs in his "Battlestar". But mainly, in the episode "Sometimes A Great Notion", "Starbuck" is referred to as the "Harbinger of Death", a direct POTA reference when she discovers >CENSORED!< . And when she's looking for her destiny in the same episode, she's told, "You may not like what you find". So, come on! If the "Harbinger of Death" has no place in the new POTA movies, then there is no God. Did I say that?

Both of those are not just stunt casting. I have been blown away by their acting and I'm sure if they did a role in "Dawn of the POTA" they would rock. Besides that, I think it would be fun if they were cast. So those are my ideas. It would be interesting to hear yours (let's be realistic; no Clint Eastwood or Bruce Willis).

Well, I've always assumed Taylor's flight was the first of its kind, though the absurdity of it leaving in 1972 really started to sink in with me about... oh...1972!  Hard to imagine now that there would have been anything before then.

In the Boulle novel, Professor Antelle's interstellar mission is called by Merou "the first interstellar flight," and "the most ambitious (project) that had ever been concieved on Earth."
I think the filmmakers had that same idea in mind with the movie adaptation, but, of course, it's not directly stated, though there seems no indication from the astronauts' dialogue that they're not the first of their kind in this respect.

Maybe it was his favorite movie, but a star like Brad Pitt could've got a good
POTA movie rolling back before Burton. Hollywood had no idea what to do with
POTA until Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver came up with their idea on a whim.
Nobody knows anything.

There's no direct reference in the movies but I think their flight is one of a
kind, perhaps a suicide mission. But the moon landing is mentioned in "Escape".
I'm still trying to figure out who the "Marshall" is that's referenced in the
NATO footage.

Yeah...unless it was favorite enough to take a large pay cut
all the top guys would have gone over budget with makeup & FX.

If he'd pulled a Heston and been on board
pushing it before they even had a movie.

In the NATO film Taylor says it's man's first journey to a star, but it is never directly stated in the film itself. However, it may be infered from Taylor's comment to Landon, 'when they nominated you for the big one, you couldn't turn it down'.
