Actress Pamela Anderson takes aim at KFC's Canadian parent company   Message List

VAUGHAN, Ont. (CP) - Former Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson is taking on KFC
Canada's parent company, calling for an international boycott of the fast-food
chain for what she calls the cruel treatment of its chickens.
"If people knew how KFC treats its chickens, they'd never eat another
drumstick," Anderson said in a letter faxed to John Bitove, chairman of Priszm
Brandz, at the company's headquarters in this community north of Toronto on
Thursday.

Anderson joined Paul McCartney, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and NAACP
president Kweisi Mfume in an international campaign against KFC by the People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The British Columbia native and animal rights activist accused KFC of scalding
live birds and using crippling drugs.

"I am shocked to learn from my pals at PETA that KFC has refused to take steps
to eliminate some of the worst abuses suffered by the hundreds of millions of
chickens who are killed for your restaurants in Canada, the U.S., and overseas,"
she wrote.

"Please face the facts: KFC is torturing birds and then trying to pretend that
there is nothing wrong with that. In the 21st century, we're advanced enough to
oppose all cruelty and injustice, whether the victims are animals or people."

The PETA campaign has included demonstrations around the world, as well as
billboard and print advertisements.

KFC has long denied claims from PETA that it mistreats chickens. In May, the
company said in a news release it would adopt "comprehensive industry-leading
guidelines and audits for the humane raising and handling of poultry."

It also said it has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to review a
proposal on the feasibility of gas-killing chickens following a PETA suggestion.

PETA claims KFC raises 750 million chickens each year in overcrowded,
feces-filled sheds on "factory farms" and kills them in inhumane ways for its
restaurants.
