ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES
For Tuesday, August 25 -- Monday, August 31
Adventureland
It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight college grad, can't wait to embark on his dream tour of Europe. But when his parents (Wendie Malick, Jack Gilpin) announce they can no longer subsidize his trip, James has little choice but to take a lowly job at a local amusement park. Forget about German beer, world-famous museums and cute French girls -- James' summer will now be populated by belligerent dads, stuffed pandas, and screaming kids high on cotton candy. Lucky for James, what should have been his worst summer ever turns into quite an adventure as he discovers love in the most unlikely place with his captivating co-worker Em (Kristen Stewart), and learns to loosen up. Features a vintage soundtrack with great '80s pop songs by iconic music acts of the era, including The Cure, David Bowie, Crowded House, INXS, Lou Reed and more. Vitals: Director: Greg Mottola. Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Wendie Malick, Jack Gilpin, Martin Starr, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Reynolds. 2009, CC, MPAA rating: R, 107 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $16.025 million, Miramax.

Duplicity
Julia Roberts and Clive Owen star as spies-turned-corporate operatives who are having a clandestine love affair. When they find themselves embroiled in a high-stakes espionage game, they discover the toughest part of the job is deciding how much to trust the one you love. CIA officer Claire Stenwick (Roberts) and MI6 agent Ray Koval (Owen) have left the world of government intelligence to cash in on the highly profitable cold war raging between two rival multinational corporations. Their mission? Secure the formula for a product that will bring a fortune to the company that patents it first. For their employers -- industry Titan Howard Tully (Tom Wilkinson) and buccaneer CEO Dick Garsik (Paul Giamatti) -- nothing is out of bounds. But as the stakes rise, the mystery deepens and the tactics get dirtier, the trickiest secret for Claire and Ray is their growing attraction. And as they each try to stay one double-cross ahead, two career loners find their schemes endangered by the only thing they can't cheat their way out of: love. Ultimately uninvolving outing despite (or because of) plot twists and turns and weak acting; not nearly up to director Tony Gilroy's 2007 "Michael Clayton." Vitals: Director: Tony Gilroy. Stars: Julia Roberts, Clive Owen, Billy Bob Thornton, Tom Wilkinson, Paul Giamatti. 2009, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 125 min., Romantic Thriller, Box office gross: $40.559 million, Universal.

Fighting
Gritty story of a small town boy who becomes a street fighting star in New York City's underground circuit. Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum) knows firsthand that every day in New York City is a struggle to survive. So when scam artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard) gives him a chance to be something more in the brutal underground world of bare-knuckle street-fighting, Shawn decides that he has something worth fighting for and puts everything on the line to win. Every knockout brings him closer to the life he's always wanted, but also traps him in a dangerous web he can't escape. Vitals: Director: Dito Montiel. Stars: Channing Tatum, Terrance Howard, Zulay Henao, Luis Guzman. 2008, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 105 min., Action, Box office gross: $23.036 million, Universal.

Sunshine Cleaning
A single mom and her slacker sister find an unexpected way to turn their lives around in the off-beat dramatic comedy "Sunshine Cleaning." Once the high school cheerleading captain who dated the quarterback, Rose Lorkowski (Amy Adams) now finds herself a thirtysomething single mother working as a maid. Her sister Norah (Emily Blunt) is still living at home with their dad Joe (Alan Arkin), a salesman with a lifelong history of ill-fated get rich quick schemes. Desperate to get her son into a better school, Rose persuades Norah to go into the crime scene clean-up business with her to make some quick cash. In no time, the girls are up to their elbows in murders, suicides and other ... specialized situations. As they climb the ranks in a very dirty job, the sisters find a true respect for one another and the closeness they have always craved finally blossoms. By building their own improbable business, Rose and Norah open the door to the joys and challenges of being there for one another -- no matter what -- while creating a brighter future for the entire Lorkowski family. NEWS

The Criterion Collection has three powerful offerings this week, headlined by the groundbreaking Chantal Akerman masterpiece "Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles"
(1975), a singular work in film history that brilliantly evokes, with
meticulous detail and a sense of impending doom, the daily domestic
routine of a middle-aged widow (Delphine Seyrig) -- whose chores
include making the beds, cooking dinner for her grown son, and turning
the occasional trick -- just as it begins to break down. In its
enormous spareness, Akerman's film seems simple, but it encompasses an
entire world. Whether seen as an exacting character portrait or one of
cinema's most hypnotic and complete depictions of space and time,
"Jeanne Dielman" is an astonishing, compelling movie experiment, one
that has been analyzed and argued over for decades, and is finally
making its long-awaited DVD debut. This restored digital transfer,
approved by Akerman, includes "Autour de Jeanne Dielman," a 70-minute
documentary shot by actor Sami Frey and edited by Agnes Ravez, made
during the filming of "Jeanne Dielman"; interviews with Akerman and
cinematographer Babette Mangolte; excerpt from "Chantal Akerman par
Chantal Akerman," a 1997 episode of the French television program
"Cinema de notre temps"; a booklet featuring essays by film scholars
Ivone Margulies and Janet Bergstrom; and more."The Last Days of Disco" (1998), starring Chloe Sevigny, Kate Beckinsale and Chris Eigeman, is a clever, comic return to the nighttime party scene in early 1980s Manhattan from director Whit Stillman ("Metropolitan"). At the center of the film's roundelay of revelers are the icy Charlotte (Kate Beckinsale) and the demure Alice (Chloe Sevigny), by day toiling as publishing house assistants and by night looking for romance and entertainment at a premier, Studio 54–like club. "The Last Days of Disco" is an affectionate yet unsentimental look at the end of an era, brimming with Stillman's trademark dry humor. In a new, restored high-definition digital transfer, supervised and approved by Stillman, featuring commentary by Stillman and actors Sevigny and Eigeman; deleted scenes; more ... "Eclipse Series 17: Nikkatsu Noir" is a no-frills set featuring five action potboilers from the heyday of the Japanese film studio: "I Am Waiting" (1957), "Rusty Knife" (1958), "Take Aim at the Police Van" (1960), "Cruel Gun Story" (1964) and "A Colt Is My Passport" (1967); $69.95.
