Two Lovers

Set in the insular world of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. A charismatic but troubled young man (Joaquin Phoenix) moves back into his childhood home following a recent heartbreak. While recovering under the watchful eye of his parents (Isabella Rossellini and Moni Monoshov), Leonard meets two women in quick succession: Michelle (Gwyneth Paltrow), a mysterious and beautiful neighbor who is exotic and out-of-place in Leonard's staid world, and Sandra (Vinessa Shaw), the lovely and caring daughter of a businessman who is buying out his family's dry-cleaning business. Leonard becomes deeply infatuated by Michelle, who seems poised to fall for him, but is having a self-destructive affair with a married man. At the same time, mounting pressure from his family pushes him towards committing to Sandra. Leonard is forced to make an impossible decision -- between the impetuousness of desire and the comfort of love -- or risk falling back into the darkness that nearly killed him. photo Director Hal Ashby, who died an untimely death in 1988 after fighting internal demons that led him to drug and booze abuse, left behind a brilliant, maverick career that included winning an Oscar for editing "In the Heat of the Night" (1967) and directing such unusual films as "The Landlord" (1970), "Harold and Maude" (1971) "The Last Detail" (1973), "Shampoo" (1975), "Bound for Glory" (1976), "Coming Home" (1978) and Being There (1979). His "Lookin' to Get Out" (1982), starring Jon Voight, Burt Young and Ann-Margret, will debut in a never-before-seen cut that represents the director's original vision. The new version was recently uncovered with the help of its star, Jon Voight, Ashby-biographer Nick Dawson and Ashby's daughter, Leigh MacManus, who found that, unbeknownst to anyone, the director had re-edited the film after its release, then donated it to the UCLA archives prior to his death. The comedy follows the trials and tribulations of a pair of New York City losers who flee to Las Vegas to escape a loan shark hot on their trail. The DVD was originally scheduled for a May 26 release but was delayed. From Warner.

Uni Plays It "Fast & Furious"
photo Universal has just announced a July 28 release date for "Fast & Furious," the fiery, turbo-charged actioner reuniting the stars from the first vehicle in the franchise, "The Fast and the Furious." Vin Diesel and Paul Walker head back to the streets where it all began, rejoining Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster, blasting through Los Angeles and into the Mexican desert to track down a heroin drug lord. The film screeches home on a two-disc Blu-ray set, a two-disc Special Edition DVD, a single-disc DVD and as download-to-own. Both the Blu-ray and Special Edition DVD sets are packed with bonus features and contain a digital copy of the film that can be played on an array of electronic devices.
