Fired Up

Gran Torino Another superb outing by director-actor Clint Eastwood. Walt Kowalski (Eastwood) is a widower, a grumpy, tough-minded, borderline-hateful, unhappy old man who can't get along with either his kids or his neighbors, a Korean War veteran whose prize possession is a 1973 Gran Torino he keeps in cherry condition. When his neighbor Tao, a young Hmong teenager, tries to steal the Gran Torino, Kowalski sets out to reform the youth. Drawn against his will into the life of Tao's family, Kowalski is soon taking steps to protect them from the gangs that foul their neighborhood. A straight-ahead, no-frills actioner with a big heart. Coming Soon:
photo On July 21 Universal will release "Coraline" (2009), director Henry Selick's quirky 3-D animated gem based on the book by Neil Gaiman. The film will be available in a Blu-ray combo pack, two-disc collector's edition DVD and single-disc DVD. All editions contain the 2-D and 3-D versions of the film and four pairs of 3-D glasses as well as various and sundry bonus features ... On August 4 Sony will release "Obsessed" (2009), starring Idris Elba, Beyonce Knowles, Ali Larter, Bruce McGill, Jerry O'Connell and Christine Lahti, with such bonus features as "Girl Fight," a look at the fight sequence between Beyonce Knowles and Ali Larter, and other behind-the-scenes featurettes, on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

DVD Collectibles:
The highlight of the week is Warner Home Video's "Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music: The Director's Cut," a four-hour director's cut of the 1970 Oscar-winning documentary about the landmark music event that featured some of the greatest rock 'n' roll performers in history in a new limited, numbered Blu-ray and DVD Ultimate Collector's Edition. Includes two extra hours of rare performance footage -- photo some of it newly-discovered, some only seen in part and some never seen at all. The two extra hours of rare footage features 18 new performances from 13 groups, including Joan Baez, Country Joe McDonald, Santana, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Canned Heat, Joe Cocker and five (Paul Butterfield, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Grateful Dead, Johnny Winter and Mountain) who played at Woodstock but never appeared in any film version. A third hour of bonus material includes a featurette gallery showcasing interviews with Martin Scorsese, producer Michael Lang, director Michael Wadleigh, Hugh Hefner, Eddie Kramer (the concert's original chief on-site engineer and producer-engineer for Jimi Hendrix) and others who chronicle the making of the festival and the film. Packaged in a unique giftbox, numbered as part of a limited run with an array of collectibles that include a 60+ page reprint of a Life magazine commemorative issue, a lucite lenticular display of vintage festival photos, festival memorabilia and an iron-on patch with the classic dove and guitar Woodstock emblem. Remastered from original elements and scanned at 2K with an audio 5.1 mix. The Ultimate Collector's Edition will be available in Blu-ray ($69.99) as well as DVD ($59.98). A Two-Disc Special Edition will be available for $24.98.

(1954), "Operation Mad Ball" (1957), "The Notorius Landlady" (1962), "Under The Yum Yum Tree" (1963) and "Good Neighbor Sam" (1964); $59.95; and "The Norman Lear Collection," a 19-disc set with the complete first seasons of "All in the Family," "Sanford and Son," "Maude," "The Jeffersons," "Good Times," "One Day at a Time" and "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman"; $159.95.

"The Best of Whose Line Is It Anyway?" is a two-disc set with the 10 best episodes from Seasons 2-6; $24.98 from Warner ...
