"Natural Born Killers" Rides Again
Fourteen years ago, Oliver Stone shocked the film world with "Natural
Born Killers," a disturbing hallucinogenic ride through the minds and
exploits of two cold-blooded lovers who killed for sport, love and
attention. Prior to the theatrical release, Stone reworked the film,
made more than 150 cuts, and removed about four minutes in order to get
an R rating. On August 25 Warner Home Video will release the original
unrated film in a Blu-ray version ($28.99) that includes a new high-def
introduction from Stone, a 44-page booklet on the film's production and
a host of bonus features. A two-disc DVD ($20.97) will also be
available.
The film stars Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis as husband and wife
serial killers in a gut-grabbing look at how violence and crime are
sensationalized and glamorized in the media. As Mickey and Mallory cut
their swath of terror across America, they are regarded more like
celebrities than fugitives. Robert Downey Jr. and Tommy Lee Jones also
star. Extras include a new introduction by Stone; commentary by Stone;
"NBK Evolution: How Would It All Go Down Now?" a new featurette
examining how the film might address the issues and changes in current
media, creating a timeline of the killers' activities in cell phone
videos, blogs, tweets and Facebook updates (How would Stone portray
today's instantaneous user-generated media society and its reaction to
the exploits of Mickey and Mallory? How would the social networks and
the blogs cover, discuss and rate each of their killing sprees? How
many views and comments would their home-made videos generate on
YouTube?); "Chaos Rising: The Storm Around Natural Born Killers"
making-of documentary about the storm of controversy surrounding the
film; deleted scenes; an alternate ending, and a Charlie Rose interview.
"Wise Blood" (1979), directed by John Huston and starring Brad Dourif, Harry Dean Stanton, Ned Beatty and William Hickey, is a new, restored high-definition digital transfer of the acclaimed adaptation of the first novel by legendary Southern writer Flannery O'Connor. Huston brings to life a world of vivid, poetic American eccentricity. Brad Dourif is Hazel Motes, who, fresh out of the army, attempts to open the first Church Without Christ in the small town of Taulkinham. Populated with inspired performances that seem to spring right from O'Connor's pages, Huston's "Wise Blood" is an incisive portrait of spirituality and evangelicalism, as well as a faithful, loving evocation of one writer's vision. Extras include new interviews with Dourif, writer Benedict Fitzgerald, and writer-producer Michael Fitzgerald; rare archival audio recording of author Flannery O'Connor reading her short story "A Good Man Is Hard to Find"; "Creativity With Bill Moyers: "John Huston," a 28-minute television program from 1982 in which the director discusses his life and work; and a booklet featuring an essay by author Francine Prose.
