For Tuesday, April 28 --  Monday, May 4

Bride Wars
Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) are best friends who, since childhood, have planned every detail of their respective weddings. At the top of their bridal "must have" list: a ceremony at New York's ultimate bridal destination, the Plaza Hotel. Now, at age 26, they're both about to get married; they're about to realize their dreams; and they're about to live happily ever after. But all that changes when a clerical error causes a clash in wedding dates -- they're now to be married on the same date. Now Liv, Emma and their lifelong friendship are put to the ultimate test. Liv, a successful lawyer who is used to getting what she wants, including the perfect job and the perfect man, won't settle for anything less than the perfect wedding she has dreamed of for years. Emma, a schoolteacher who has always been good at taking care of others, but not so much in looking after herself, discovers her inner Bridezilla and comes out swinging when her own dream wedding is imperiled. Now, the two best friends who'd do anything for each other, find themselves in a no-holds-barred, take-no-prisoners struggle that threatens to erupt into all-out war. Vitals: Director: Gary Winick. Stars: Anne Hathaway, Kate Hudson, Candice Bergen, Kristen Johnston, Bryan Greenberg, Steve Howey, Chris Pratt, Michael Arden, John Pankow, Paul Scheer. 2009, CC, MPAA rating: PG, 90 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $58.134 million, Fox. 2 stars

The resourceful kids stumble upon an abandoned hotel and using Bruce's talents as a mechanical genius, transform it into a magical dog-paradise for Friday -- and eventually for all Friday's friends. When barking dogs make the neighbors suspicious, Andi and Bruce use every invention they have to avoid anyone discovering "who let the dogs in." Vitals: Director: Thor Freudenthal. Stars: Don Cheadle, Emma Roberts, Lisa Kudrow, Kevin Dillon, Johnny Simmons, Troy Gentile, Robinne Lee. 2009, CC, MPAA rating: PG, 100 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $71,353 million, DreamWorks/Paramount. 2 stars

Uninvited, The

NEWS

DVD Collectibles:
Three unique films arrive this week from the Criterion Collection: Still censored in Japan, "In the Realm of the Senses (Ai no corrida)" (1976) by Nagisa Oshima, remains one of the most controversial films of all time. A graphic portrayal of insatiable sexual desire, Oshima's film, set in 1936 and based on a true incident, depicts a man and a woman (Tatsuya Fuji and Eiko Matsuda) consumed by a transcendent, destructive love while living in an era of ever escalating imperialism and governmental control. Less a work of pornography than of politics, it's a brave, taboo-breaking milestone ... In "Empire of Passion" (1978) Oshima plunges the viewer into a nightmarish tale of guilt and retribution. Set in a Japanese village at the end of the 19th century, the film details the emotional and physical downfall of a married woman (Kazuko Yoshiyuki) and her younger lover (Tatsuya Fuji) following their decision to murder her husband and dump his body in a well ... "The Hit" (1984), directed by Stephen Frears and starring Terence Stamp, John Hurt and Tim Roth, is a sordid story about a gangster's henchman turned informer trying to live in peaceful hiding in a remote Spanish village whose sun-dappled bliss turns sour when two hit men arrive to bring him back for execution. All three films feature new, restored high-definition digital transfers and are loaded with extras.

This Week's Pick:
right Every once in awhile a really off-beat film comes along that shocks you out of your moviegoing complacency. It has disturbing images or a bizarre storyline or is just downright strange and different. The original "Night of the Living Dead" (tame now but in 1968 ...), "Eraserhead," "Blue Velvet," "El Topo," "Wild Bunch," "Mad Max," "Repulsion," "From Dusk to Dawn" come immediately to mind. "Cargo 200" (2007) is one of those films, a real surprise and shocker from Russian director Alexey Balabanov. The film, a gritty thriller loosely based on actual events (Russian serial killer Gennady Mikhasevich) that becomes the blackest of black comedies, is set in 1984 in provincial Russia, where the gloom of Soviet life has reached extreme depths. It runs the gamut of wayward youth, Soviet-era rock 'n' roll, philosophical discussions on religion and state atheism, government corruption, murder, sexual perversions, police brutality and death. It's an epitaph for the death of the Soviet Union; the title is the Russian military term for the coffins transporting dead soldiers back home from Afghanistan. A wild ride, from The Disinformation Co.

More Collectibles:
photo "Johnny Got His Gun" (1971), starring Timothy Bottoms, Jason Robards, Donald Sutherland, Kathy Fields, Marsha Hunt and Diane Varsi is Dalton Trumbo's landmark film, finally making its way to DVD in the States. Academy Award-winner Trumbo was one of Hollywood's most celebrated screenwriters and was one of the blacklisted "Hollywood Ten." After four decades writing such monumental Hollywood films as "Spartacus," "Kitty Foyle," "Exodus," "Roman Holiday" and "The Brave One," Trumbo made his directorial debut on "Johnny Got His Gun," from his own adaptation of his award-winning novel. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the novel's publication, but its pacifist themes and message are as relevant today as ever: A young American soldier, Joe Bonham (Timothy Bottoms), is wounded by a mortar shell on the last day of World War I. He lies in an army hospital bed, a blind, deaf and mute quadruple amputee, searching for meaning with only his memories and fantasies to distract him from the grim reality of his situation. With plenty of extras, from Shout! Factory.

Severin Films will release this week two films by veteran French filmmaker Patrice Laconte ("Girl on the Bridge," "Ridicule"): In the acclaimed "The Hairdresser's Husband" (1990), starring Jean Rochefort, Anna Galiena and Anne-Marie Pisani, Rochefort stars as an older man whose childhood sexual obsession with a local hairdresser leads him one day to the shop of beautiful young Mathilde. What follows is a romance of ultimate sensual devotion, where love walks the line between physical pleasure and eternal desire ... and "The Perfume of Yvonne" (1994), starring Hippolyte Girardot, Sandra Majani and Jean-Pierre Marielle in an elegiac love story set in the summer of 1958 in wealthy Lake Geneva, where an enigmatic young Frenchman begins an affair with a beautiful starlet under the watchful eye of her flamboyant elderly mentor.
