Mamma Mia! The Movie
Meryl Streep leads an all-star cast in the feature-film adaptation of the musical that has been seen by more than 30 million people in 160 cities and 8 languages around the world. An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Streep) is about to let go of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the spirited daughter she's raised alone. For Sophie's wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends --practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski) -- from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own. On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna's past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled. Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA's songs from "Dancing Queen" and "S.O.S." to "Money, Money, Money" and "Take a Chance on Me," Mamma Mia! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found. Vitals: Director: Phyllida Lloyd. Stars: Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper. 2008, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 109 min., Musical, Box office gross: $143.704 million, Company.

Mummy, The: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Brendan Fraser returns in this second sequel as explorer Rick O'Connell to combat the resurrected Han Emperor (Jet Li) in an adventure that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China's ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have lain forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing adventurer Alex O'Connell (Rick's son) is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents. As the monarch roars back to life, his quest for world domination has only intensified over the millennia. Striding the Far East with unimaginable supernatural powers, the Emperor Mummy will rouse his legion as an unstoppable, otherworldly force ... unless the O'Connells can stop him first. Vitals: Director: Rob Cohen. Stars: Brendan Fraser, Maria Bello, Jet Li, John Hannah, Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Wong, Luke Ford, Isabella Leong. 2008, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 112 min., Action Adventure, Box office gross: $102.176 million, Universal.

The members of the sorority -- who also have got to be the seven most socially clueless women on the planet -- are about to lose their house unless they can come up with more pledges. They need a dose of what only the eternally bubbly Shelley can provide ... sexy hipness. Shelly ends of remaking the girls and the sorority -- but in the end the girls will each have to learn on their own to stop pretending to be what others want them to be and start being themselves. Vitals: Director: Fred Wolf. Taut international thriller set against a puzzle of covert counter-espionage operations. But a tangle of contradictory evidence emerges, forcing Clayton to question whether his suspect is a disaffected former military operative -- or something far more complicated. Obsessed with discovering the truth, Clayton tracks Horn across the globe as the elusive ex-soldier burrows deeper and deeper into a world of shadows and intrigue. Vitals: Director: Jeffrey Nachmanoff. Stars: Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Said Taghmaoui, Neal McDonough, Jeff Daniels. 2008, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 114 min., Thriller, Box office gross: $23.332 million, Overture Films/Anchor Bay.

Burn After Reading
Very funny and sly comedy thriller about what happens when a disc filled with some of the CIA's most irrelevant secrets gets in the hands of two determined, but dim-witted, gym employees. The duo are intent on exploiting their find, but since blackmail is a trade better left for the experts, events soon spiral out of everyone's and anyone's control. At the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency in Arlington, Va., analyst Osborne Cox (John Malkovich) arrives for a top-secret meeting. Unfortunately for Cox, the secret is soon out: he is being ousted. Cox does not take the news particularly well and returns to his Georgetown home to work on his memoirs and his drinking, not necessarily in that order. His wife Katie (Tilda Swinton) is dismayed, though not particularly surprised; she is already well into an illicit affair with Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney), a married federal marshal, and sets about making plans to leave Cox for Harry. Elsewhere in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, and seemingly worlds apart, Hardbodies Fitness Centers employee Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand) can barely concentrate on her work. She is consumed with her life plan for extensive cosmetic surgery, and confides her mission to can-do colleague Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt). Linda is all but oblivious to the fact that the gym's manager Ted Treffon (Richard Jenkins) pines for her even as she arranges dates via the Internet with other men. When a computer disc containing material for the CIA analyst's memoirs accidentally falls into the hands of Linda and Chad, the duo are intent on exploiting their find. As Ted frets, "No good can come of this." Vitals: Director: Joel and Ethan Coen. Stars: George Clooney, John Malkovich, Frances McDormand, Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton, Richard Jenkins, J.K. Simmons. 2008, CC, MPAA rating: R, 96 min., Spy Comedy, Box office gross: $58.976 million, Universal.

Death Race
Jason Statham leads the cast of this action-thriller set in the post-industrial wasteland of tomorrow, with the world's most brutal sporting event as its backdrop. A penitentiary full of felons has inspired the jailers to create a grisly pastime ripe for lucrative kickbacks. Now, adrenalized inmates, a global audience hungry for televised violence and a spectacular arena come together to form the "Death Race." Three-time speedway champion Jensen Ames (Statham) is an expert at survival in the harsh landscape that has become our country. Just as he thinks he has turned his life around, the ex-con is framed for a gruesome murder he didn't commit. Forced to don the mask of the mythical driver Frankenstein -- a crowd favorite who seems impossible to kill -- Ames is given an easy choice by Terminal Island's warden (Joan Allen): suit up or rot away in a cell. Ames must survive a gauntlet of the most vicious criminals in the country's toughest prison to claim the prize of freedom. Remake of sorts of 1975's "Death Race 2000." Vitals: Director: Paul W.S. Anderson. Stars: Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson, Joan Allen, Ian McShane, Natalie Martinez, Jason Clarke. 2008, CC, MPAA rating: R, 105 min., Action, Box office gross: $36.064 million, Universal.

Women, The
Adaptation of Clare Boothe Luce's play of the same name, first made famous by director George Cukor's iconic 1939 film. Set in New York City's modern whirl of fashion and publishing, "The Women" tells the story of Mary Haines (Meg Ryan), a clothing designer who seems to have it all -- a beautiful country home, a rich financier husband, an adorable 11-year-old daughter and a part-time career creating designs for her father's venerable clothing company. Her best friend, Sylvie Fowler (Annette Bening), leads another enviable life -- a happily single editor of a prominent fashion magazine, a possessor of a huge closet of designer clothes and a revered arbiter of taste and style poised on New York's cutting edge. But when Mary's husband enters into an affair with Crystal Allen (Eva Mendes), a sultry "spritzer girl" lurking behind the Saks Fifth Avenue perfume counter, all hell breaks loose. Mary and Sylvie's relationship is tested to the breaking point while their tight-knit circle of friends, including mega-mommy Edie Cohen (Debra Messing) and author Alex Fisher (Jada Pinkett-Smith), all start to question their own friendships and romantic relationships as well. Vitals: Director: Diane English. Stars: Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Debra Messing, Candice Bergen, Bette Midler, Cloris Leachman, Carrie Fisher, Lynn Whitfield, Joanna Gleason, Ana Gasteyer, Debi Mazar. 2008, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 114 min., Drama, Box office gross: $26.739 million, Warner.

Vitals: Director: Andrew Fleming. Stars: Steve Coogan, Catherine Keener, Amy Poehler, Melonie Diaz, David Arquette, Elisabeth Shue. 2008, CC, MPAA rating: R, 92 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $4.881 million, Universal.
