Avenue Montaigne
Delicious film centers around Jessica (Cecile de France) a beautiful young woman from the provinces who comes to Paris and lands a job waiting tables at a chic bistro on fabled Avenue Montaigne, the city's nexus for art, music, theater and fashion. Jessica's customers include a popular TV actress (Valerie Lemercier) who is courting a major Hollywood director (Sydney Pollack) for her first serious film role; a wealthy art collector (Claude Brasseur) who is about to liquidate a lifetime's worth of treasures at auction; and an illustrious classical pianist (Albert Dupontel) who is at odds with his manager/wife (Laura Morante) as to where his career is headed. Precisely because Jessica doesn't know how celebrated these people are, her guileless and completely unintimidated engagement in their lives has a transforming effect on them -- and ultimately her.. Factory Girl
"Factory Girl" imaginatively unfolds the comet-like rise and fall of 60s "it girl" Edie Sedgwick, the blazing superstar who came to define both the glamour and the tragedy of our celebrity-obsessed culture. Sedgwick appeared to be the quintessential American princess, with her blue blood, her trust fund and her Harvard education, not to mention her ethereal beauty and vivacious charisma. But she was also a lost and fragile little girl; and when she met up with counter-culture anti-hero Andy Warhol, everything changed. Suddenly, Edie found herself at the center of a Pop Art universe bursting with sex, drugs, style and rock 'n' roll -- and a mad rush for fame and fabulousness that was destined to spin out of control. Arriving into the chaos of mid-60s New York, Edie (Sienna Miller) meets Andy (Guy Pearce) who sees in her an untamed vulnerability and the makings of an irresistible muse. He invites her into the wild world of the Factory, a bohemian, creative paradise where a rag-tag mix of musicians, poets, artists, actors and misfits gather to create art and make underground movies during the day and throw glam parties all night long. Edie quickly ascends to become the star of Warhol's movies, an idol at the Factory and a media darling. When she falls in love with a larger-than-life rock star, Edie becomes caught between Warhol's artistic revolution and her new love. Vitals: Director: George Hickenlooper. Stars: Sienna Miller, Guy Pearce, Hayden Christensen, Jimmy Fallon, Jack Huston, Armin Amiri, Tara Summers, Mena Suvari , Shawn Hatosy, Beth Grant, James Naughton, Edward Herrmann, Illeana Douglas. 2007, CC, MPAA rating: R, 90 min., Drama, Box office gross: $1.661 million, The Weinstein Co.

Little do they know that these are the very hills that the ill-fated Carter family once visited, and that a tribe of cannibalistic mutants lies in wait. And this time, there is an even larger force of evil at work that is intent on the soldiers' very destruction: the worst of the worst -- the family patriarch Papa Hades -- plans to keep the women as breeders in order to ensure the survival of the mutant clan. Life and Times of Allen Ginsberg, The
Visionary, radical, spiritual seeker, renowned poet, founding member of a major literary movement, champion of human rights, Buddhist, political activist and teacher -- Allen Ginsberg's remarkable life challenged the very soul of America. For 25 years Academy Award nominated Director Jerry Aronson accumulated more than 120 hours of film on Allen Ginsberg. This resulted in a comprehensive portrait of one of America's greatest poets, author of "HOWL" and other ground-breaking poems. This deluxe two-disc DVD set contains the Director's cut of the award-winning documentary that began filming in 1982 and now is complete, updated and re-mastered. The set includes exclusive and revealing historical interviews with his friends, family and contemporaries as well as never-before-seen materials made public because of the warm friendship that developed between Ginsberg and the filmmaker. Also included are many new interviews with the latest generation of artists influenced by Ginsberg. This eight-hour compilation reveals the last 60 years of American culture beginning with the Beat era in the post war Forties and Fifties, continuing through the revolutionary Sixties and concluding with both the uncertainty and possibility of current times. Vitals: Director: Jerry Aronson. 2004, CC, Documentary, New Yorker Video.

Her world is turned upside down as the surreal circumstances lead her to discover that her perfect life may not have been all that it appeared. DVD Collectibles:
"Ace in the Hole"
is a stunning picture of post-World War II America by director Billy
Wilder. The 1951 film, notable for its unbridled cynicism, stars Kirk
Douglas and Jan Sterling. One of the most scathing indictments of
American culture ever produced by a Hollywood filmmaker, Academy
Award-winner Wilder's "Ace in the Hole" is legendary for both its
cutting social critique and its status as a hard-to-find cult classic.
Douglas gives the fiercest performance of his career as Chuck Tatum, an
amoral newspaper reporter caught in dead-end Albuquerque who happens
upon the story of a lifetime -- and will do anything to ensure he gets
the scoop. When a man is trapped alive in a mine collapse, Tatum and
the townspeople cynically create a "circus" around the tragedy and the
efforts to save the miner. Wilder's follow-up to "Sunset Boulevard" is
an even darker vision, a no-holds-barred expose that anticipated the
rise of the American media circus. As usual the folks at The Criterion
Collection have gone all out in the restoration of the film, providing
a new, restored high-definition digital transfer. Extras in the
two-disc set include commentary by film scholar Neil Sinyard; "Portrait
of a '60% Perfect Man': Billy Wilder," a 1980 documentary featuring
in-depth interviews with Wilder by film critic Michel Ciment; excerpts
from a 1986 appearance by Wilder at the American Film Institute;
excerpts from an audio interview with co-screenwriter Walter Newman;
booklet featuring new essays by film critic Molly Haskell and filmmaker
Guy Maddin. A must-buy.New Yorker Video will release this week an important document of 20th century culture: "The Life and Times of Allen Ginsberg" (2005), a documentary on Allen Ginsberg, the beats and modern American literary culture. Ginsberg was the visionary poet who inspired the Beat Generation with the rage and compassion of "Howl" and the tenderness of "Kaddish." He was the pacifist who calmed the violence around him at the Democratic Convention in 1968. He was the gentle teacher who inspired his friends. He was the writer and activist who weathered five decades of controversy and fame, looked each of those decades straight in the eye, and survived. For 20 years, Academy Award nominee Jerry Aronson accumulated more than 100 hours of film documentation of Ginsberg's life. During that time he developed a warm friendship with Ginsberg, who enthusiastically gave Aronson access to materials never before made public. In addition, he shot many hours of exclusive interviews with Ginsberg and his friends and contemporaries. These voices and images lay bare the essence of the poet. The resulting film is a view of the last 50 years through Ginsberg's penetrating eye: the beginnings of the Beats in the post-war Forties and Fifties, the wild energy of the Sixties, the disillusionment of the Seventies, and the cynicism and confusion of the Eighties and the Nineties. Includes interviews with Joan Baez, Beck, Bono, Stan Brakhage, William Burroughs, Johnny Depp, Philip Glass, Abbie Hoffman, Jack Johnson, Ken Kesey, Timothy Leary, Paul McCartney, Jonas Mekas, Thurston Moore, Yoko Ono, Lee Ranaldo, Ed Sanders, Patti Smith, Hunter S. Thompson and Andy Warhol. Extras include "The Making of The Life and Times of Allen Ginsberg"; Bob Dylan and Allen Ginsberg at Jack Kerouac's grave; William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg at Naropa University; Neal Cassady and Allen Ginsberg at City Lights Bookstore; Ginsberg poetry reading; more. The two-disc set sells for $34.95.

The former is a set of films highlighting the aquatic actress at her peak; the latter is a steamy melodrama with plenty of frontal nudity that we hoped would live up to its hype as an overlooked guilty pleasure but just lived up to its reputation as a sloppy mess with a corny plot line, weak acting and high school direction; the film effectively slowed down all the leads' and the director's careers for years. Ugh!
