ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES
For Tuesday, April 17 -- Monday, April 23
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
Based on the international best-seller, "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress" is set in the early 1970's during the later stages of China's "Cultural Revolution," as two city-bred teenage best friends, Luo (Kun Chen) and Ma (Ye Liu), are sent to a backward mountainous region for Maoist re-education. Sons of doctors branded as "reactionary intellectuals," the boys are required to perform arduous manual labor along with locals while under the supervision of the zealous village headman. Still they manage to find diversions. They save Ma's violin from destruction by claiming a Mozart lieder is actually a celebration of Chairman Mao. Because of their literacy, the headman sends them to a larger town to watch imported Albanian and North Korean communist melodramas, and then report back to the culture-starved locals. They embroider the stodgy plots with their own inventions and the villagers are entranced. During one of these trips, the two see and fall in love with the local beauty (Xun Zhou), the daughter of the most renowned tailor in the region. They never know her name, referring to her only as "the Little Seamstress," but she captivates them with her innocence and sensuality. When they discover a hidden suitcase filled with banned books by Western writers, mostly French -- Flaubert, Dumas and Balzac among them -- they read these works to the Little Seamstress for hours on end in a secret meeting place. Thirsting for knowledge of the world beyond, she comes to love, in particular, Balzac and his characters. Eventually, Luo and the seamstress become lovers, but their romance comes to an abrupt end when he is recalled home and she finds herself pregnant. Changed by her "sentimental education," the Little Seamstress ultimately finds the courage to leave her village for wider horizons. In a bittersweet coda, many years later Luo and Ma, beneficiaries of China's economic gains and enjoying considerable professional success, meet and wonder about the Little Seamstress, marveling at the transformative power of literature and the capacity to change the world around them. In Mandarin with English subtitles. Vitals: Director: Da Sijie. Stars: Xun Zhou, Kun Chen, Ye Liu. 2006, CC, MPAA rating: NR, 111 min., Drama, Box office gross: $.665 million, Empire Pictures/First Run Features.
Freedom Writers
Hilary Swank stars in the story of Erin Gruwell, a high school teacher in Long Beach, California, who encouraged her class of at-risk students to overcome the gangs that divided them and the educational system that failed them, and to tell their stories in their own words. The journals the students were inspired to write ultimately became the book "The Freedom Writers Diary." The film features an outstanding cast of young actors, many of whom grew up surrounded by gang violence and were able to draw upon their own experiences on the street to portray Gruwell's students with gritty authenticity. Vitals: Director: Richard LaGravenese. Stars: Hilary Swank, Patrick Dempsey, Scott Glenn, Imelda Staunton.2007, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 103 min., Drama, Box office gross: $36.267 million, Paramount.

The twists and turns of the story are noted in the acerbic diary of Barbara Covett (Judi Dench), a domineering and solitary teacher who rules with an iron fist over her classroom at a decaying state-run secondary school in London. Save for her cat, Portia, Barbara lives alone, without friends or confidantes - but her world changes when she meets the school's new art teacher, Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett). Sheba appears to be the kindred spirit and loyal friend Barbara has always been seeking. But when she discovers that Sheba is having an incendiary affair with one of her young students (Andrew Simpson), their budding relationship takes an ominous turn. Now, as Barbara threatens to expose Sheba's terrible secret to both her husband (Bill Nighy) and the world, Barbara's own secrets and dark obsessions come tumbling to the fore, exposing the deceptions at the core of each of the women's lives. The comedy, co-starring Thandie Newton, Cuba Gooding Jr., Marlon Wayans and Eddie Griffin will be loaded with extras and will also be available on Blu-ray and HD DVD ... Warner Home Video doubles the stakes with its "The Film Noir Classic Collection Vol. 4," debuting July 31, with legendary Hollywood tough guys and femme fatales once again colliding, this time on five discs with 10 smoldering suspense classics, all new to DVD. Titles include "Act of Violence"/"Mystery Street"; "Crime Wave"/"Decoy"; "Illegal"/"The Big Steal"; "They Live By Night"/"Side Street" and "Where Danger Lives"/"Tension." The movies, which have all been digitally remastered for this collection, star film noir icons Robert Mitchum, Edward G. Robinson, Robert Ryan, Van Heflin, Ricardo Montalban, Claude Rains and Farley Granger, among others. The collection will be available for $59.92, or $20.97 per disc.
Warner Home Video has set a May 22 release date for Clint Eastwood's visually and emotionally stunning "Letters From Iwo Jima," his Japanese-language "companion" to "Flags of Our Fathers" (which Paramount is re-releasing in a two-disc special edition on that day). The two-disc "Letters" includes two documentaries on the cast and the making of the film.
DVD COLLECTIBLES:
Due this week: "Not Just the Best of the Larry Sanders Show" is a four-disc set with 23 prime "Larry Sanders Show" episodes and more than eight hours of newly produced material, including recordings of personal and intimate visits with Shandling's friends that were originally meant only for Shandling to see. These scenarios are the ultimate in DVD verite, in that they are uncensored, real-life dialogues between Shandling and stars who appear in the featured episodes, candid tete-a-tetes that take place in the homes, offices and special haunts of the stars. The episodes chosen are not necessarily the "best" of Larry Sanders but rather a reprentative sampling from the groundbreaking, edgy series that ran from 1992 to 1998 on HBO; $49.95 from Sony.
The Criterion Collection has three films dripping with social consciousness this week: Prison melodrama "Brute Force" (1947), directed by a pre-blacklisted Jules Dassin and starring Burt Lancaster, Hume Cronyn, Charles Bickford, Yvonne De Carlo and Ann Blyth; "La Haine" (1995), starring Vincent Cassel, Hubert Kounde and Said Taghmaoui, a gritty, unsettling, and visually explosive look at the racial and cultural volatility in modern-day France; and anti-war drama "Overlord" (1975). As hard-hitting as its title, "Brute Force" was the first of Jules Dassin's forays into the crime genre, a prison melodrama that takes a critical look at American society as well. Burt Lancaster is the timeworn Joe Collins, who, along with his fellow inmates, lives under the heavy thumb of the sadistic, power-tripping guard Captain Munsey (a riveting Hume Cronyn). Matter-of-fact and ferocious, "Brute Force" builds to an explosive climax that shows that man's desperation for freedom knows no bounds. When he was just 29 years old, Mathieu Kassovitz took the international film world by storm with "La haine" (Hate), a gritty, unsettling, and visually explosive look at the racial and cultural volatility in modern-day France, specifically in the low-income banlieue districts on Paris's outskirts. Aimlessly whiling away their days in the concrete environs of their dead-end suburbia, three men give human faces to France's immigrant populations, their bristling resentments at their social marginalization slowly simmering until they reach a climactic boiling point. Seamlessly interweaving archival war footage and a fictional narrative, Stuart Cooper's "Overlord" is an immersive account of one 20-year-old's journey from basic training to the battle front lines at D-day, bringing all the terrors and isolation of war to its viewers with jolting authenticity. Impressionistically shot by Stanley Kubrick's longtime cinematographer John Alcott, the film is both a document of WWII and a dreamlike meditation on man's smallness in a large, incomprehensible machine. All three films have been restored with high-definition digital transfers.
