CARS
Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), a hotshot rookie race
car driven to succeed, discovers that life is about the journey,
not the finish line, when he finds himself unexpectedly detoured
in the sleepy Route 66 town of Radiator Springs. En route across

compete against two seasoned pros, McQueen gets to know the
town's offbeat characters -- including Doc Hudson (a 1951 Hudson
Hornet with a mysterious past, voiced by Paul Newman), Sally
Carrera (a snazzy 2002 Porsche voiced by Bonnie Hunt), and Mater
(a rusty but trusty tow truck voiced by Larry the Cable Guy) --
who help him realize that there are more important things than
trophies, fame, and sponsorship. Vitals: Director: John Lasseter,
Joe Ranft. Stars:. Voices of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie
Hunt, Larry The Cable Guy, Cheech Marin, Tony Shalhoub, Jenifer
Lewis, Paul Dooley, George Carlin, Katherine Helmond, John

thief on the lam, for an abandoned toddler. He and his wife take
the "baby" into their home while Calvin's partner Percy P (Tracy
Morgan) tries to help him recover a stolen diamond. Ugh! Vitals:

NEWS

COMING SOON:
Due Dec 19 is director Richard Linklater's "A Scanner Darkly," a
sci-fi tale about a near future in which the war on drugs has
become one and the same with the war on terror, based on a Philip
K. Dick story and starring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody
Harrelson, Winona Ryder and Rory Cochrane; the film uses live-
action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process --
a method known as interpolated rotoscoping -- from Warner ... on
January 23 Genius Products will release "This Film Is Not Yet
Rated," an unrated investigation into the MPAA film ratings
system and its profound impact on American culture, directed by
Kirby Dick featuring interviews with John Waters, Kevin Smith,
Matt Stone, Darren Aronofsky, Kimberly Peirce, Allison Anders,
David Ansen, Atom Egoyan, Steven Farber, and many, many others.

DVD COLLECTIBLES:
It's quite a week for collectors -- the high level of releases
must mean the holiday shopping season is fast approaching. Warner
Home Video gets things rolling with collections of films by two
cinematic icons: "Gary Cooper: The Signature Collection," a six-
disc set with new-to-DVD "Sergeant York" (two-disc Special
Edition), "The Fountainhead," "Springfield Rifle," "The Wreck of
Mary Deare" and "Dallas"; $49.92 (with "Sergeant York" available
separately for $26.99 and "The Fountainhead" for $19.97); and
"The Marlon Brando Collection," a six-disc set with "Mutiny on
the Bounty" (two-disc set) and four Brando films new-to-DVD:
"Julius Caesar," "The Formula," "Reflections in a Golden Eye" and
"Teahouse of the August Moon" for $59.92 (Bounty" is available
separately for $26.99; "Julius Caesar" is available for $19.97).

To take advantage of the November 17 opening of the newest 007
film, "Casino Royale," starring Daniel Craig, MGM has restored
and repackaged all the James Bond films in four five-disc sets,
with Volumes 1 and 2 scheduled for release this week and Volumes
3 and 4 slated for December 12. Each film Features state-of-the-
art Lowey Process digital frame-by-frame restoration and new 5.1
DTS Surround Sound. Each film gets a two-disc treatment with such
extras as never-before-seen footage from the Bond archives, rare
interviews, deleted scenes, documentaries, interactive film
guides, more. Volume 1: "Goldfinger," "The World Is not Enough,"
"Diamonds Are Forever," "The Man With the Golden Gun" and "The
Living Daylights." Volume 2: "Thunderball," "Die Another Day,"
"The Spy Who Loved Me," "A View to a Kill" and "Licence to Kill."

More collections: Fox has put together "The Rodgers and
Hammerstein Collection," a 12-disc set featuring two-disc special
editions of "The King and I," "Carousel," "South Pacific," "The
Sound of Music," "Oklahoma" and "State Fair," $99.98; and "The
Ultimate Flint Collection" a three-disc set with "In Like Flint"
and "Our Man Flint" plus a bonus disc with behind-the-scenes
featurettes; cast interviews; screen tests; trailers; and "Our
Man Flint: Dead on Target," a rare TV movie from 1976 starring
Ray Danton; $19.98 ... Classic Media has on hand the "Complete
Harveytoons Collection," a four-disc set with all 312 short
Harveytoon cartoons. The cartoons, available on DVD for the first

have been digitally restored. Harveytoon characters include
Casper the Friendly Ghost, Wendy the good little witch, Hot Stuff
the little devil, Richie Rich, Herman and Katnip, and others;
$39.98.

From The Criterion Collection comes "The Fallen Idol" (1948) the
first of three collaborations between director Carol Reed and
writer Graham Greene, who would go on to create the legendary
"The Third Man." "Idol" is a masterpiece in its own right: An
elegant, thrilling balancing act of suspense and farce, this tale
of the fraught relationship between a boy and his beloved butler,
who the child believes to be guilty of murder, is a visually and
verbally dazzling knockout, with enough tricks up its sleeve to
stand with the best of early Hitchcock. Stars Ralph Richardson,
Michele Morgan, Sonia Dresdel, Bobby Henrey, Denis O'Dea and Jack
Hawkins.

Other cool entries this week: Giuseppe Tornatore's 1989 "Cinema
Paradiso," a sweeping and romantic tale of friendship and love as
well as a magical tribute to film's inescapable allure. The film,
which received the 1990 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language
Film, is inspired by the memories of director Tornatore's
childhood, from his infatuation with movies to his own coming of
age. The beloved classic follows a young boy in war-torn Sicily;
growing up in a small town, his dreams of the outside world --
and of the mysterious responsibilities of faraway adulthood --
are informed only by glimpses he gets from movies, and by the
bond he forms with the local projectionist. The Weinstein
Co./Genius Products release is available in two editions: a Two
Disc Deluxe Edition ($24.95) that includes the director's version
of the film, the domestic version of the film, and featurettes;
the Limited Collector's Edition Box Set ($39.99) includes the
director's and domestic versions of the film, the "Cinema
Paradiso" soundtrack from Ennio Marricone, featurettes, "Cucina
Paradiso" Food Network tribute "Easy Entertaining With Michael
Chiarello," special recipe cCards from Food Network stars
inspired by "Cinema Paradiso," collectible lobby cards, more ...

with new digitally remastered picture and 5.1 surround sound,
from Universal ... "Oh! What a Lovely War Special Collector's
Edition" (1969), directed by Richard Attenborough and starring
Wendy Alnutt, Colin Farrell, Malcolm McFee, John Rae, Corin
Redgrave, Maurice Roeves, Paul Shelley, Kim Smith, Angela Thorne,
