Warner Home Video gets things rolling with collections of films by two cinematic icons: "Gary Cooper: The Signature Collection," a six- disc set with new-to-DVD "Sergeant York" (two-disc Special Edition), "The Fountainhead," "Springfield Rifle," "The Wreck of Mary Deare" and "Dallas"; $49.92 (with "Sergeant York" available separately for $26.99 and "The Fountainhead" for $19.97); and "The Marlon Brando Collection," a six-disc set with "Mutiny on the Bounty" (two-disc set) and four Brando films new-to-DVD: "Julius Caesar," "The Formula," "Reflections in a Golden Eye" and "Teahouse of the August Moon" for $59.92 (Bounty" is available separately for $26.99; "Julius Caesar" is available for $19.97).
To take advantage of the November 17 opening of the newest 007 film, "Casino Royale," starring Daniel Craig, MGM has restored and repackaged all the James Bond films in four five-disc sets, with Volumes 1 and 2 scheduled for release this week and Volumes 3 and 4 slated for December 12. Each film Features state-of-the- art Lowey Process digital frame-by-frame restoration and new 5.1 DTS Surround Sound. From The Criterion Collection comes "The Fallen Idol" (1948) the first of three collaborations between director Carol Reed and writer Graham Greene, who would go on to create the legendary "The Third Man." "Idol" is a masterpiece in its own right: An elegant, thrilling balancing act of suspense and farce, this tale of the fraught relationship between a boy and his beloved butler, who the child believes to be guilty of murder, is a visually and verbally dazzling knockout, with enough tricks up its sleeve to stand with the best of early Hitchcock.
