THE ROAD TO GUANTANAMO The film recounts a two-year plus journey of three British Muslim young men known as the Tipton Three who, while on a humanitarian mission, were captured and held for two years without charges in the American military prison at Cuba's Guantanamo Bay. The story begins shortly following the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. with Shafiq flying to Pakistan to meet the woman his mother has chosen for him to marry. Ruhel, his best man, along with Asif and another friend soon join them. They soon cross the border into Afghanistan to participate in a humanitarian mission, and are trapped in the middle of the Afghanistan war where they are captured by Northern Alliance soldiers, accused of being Al Queda fighters and shipped off to Guantanamo Bay. The film's theatrical release came shortly after the suicides of three prisoners held in American custody in Guantanamo, sparking renewed interest in the treatment and procedures of holding suspected terrorists in international territories. This shocking story is brought to life through dramatic re-enactments, news footage and interviews with the real Tipton Three. "The Road to Guantanamo" recounts the brutal truth of what these men experienced along their journey including religious and physical abuse, solitary confinement and no apparent legal recourse. There's two excellent outings from The Criterion Collection this week: "Hands Over the City" (1963), directed by Francesco Rosi and starring Rod Steiger, Salvo Randone and Guido Alberti. Anchored by a ferocious lead performance from Steiger as a scheming land developer, Rosi's "Hands Over the City" moves breathlessly from a cataclysmic building collapse to the backroom negotiations of civic leaders vying for power in a City Council election. Plunging headfirst into the politically driven real- estate speculation that had devastated Naples' civilian landscape, the film, which was awarded the Golden Lion at the 1963 Venice Film Festival, remains a blistering work of social realism. The double-disc set features a new, restored high- definition digital transfer ... Jane Campion will always be remembered for the shock and delight of her stunning debut feature, "Sweetie" (1989). Campion focuses on the hazardous relationship between the buttoned-down, superstitious Kay and her rampaging, devil-may-care sister, "Sweetie," and by extension, their entire family's profoundly rotten roots. A feast of distinctly framed photography and captivating, idiosyncratic characters, "Sweetie" heralded the emergence of this enormously gifted director. This special edition features a new, restored high-definition digital transfer, supervised by director of photography Sally Bongers and approved by Campion; extras include commentary featuring Campion and Bongers and screenwriter Gerard Lee; "Making Sweetie" new video interview featuring the stars of the film; Campion's early short films: "An Exercise in Discipline: Peel," "Passionless Moments" and "A Girl's Own Story"; "Jane Campion: The Film School Years," a 1989 conversation between Campion and critic Peter Thompson; a gallery of behind-the-scenes photos and production stills; and a new essay by film scholar Dana Polan.
