ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES
FOR TUESDAY, September 5 -- MONDAY, September 11

DISTRICT B13 (BANLIEUE 13)

Paris, 2010. An isolation wall surrounds the ghetto
cities. Without rules or laws, gangs reign
as absolute masters. Damien (Cyril Raffailli) is a member of the
police elite task force. A special intervention unit officer and
expert in martial arts, he is a master in the field of
infiltration, and well versed in completing his operations
through rapid, precise strong-arm actions. This time, the
government has assigned him the most extreme expedition of his
entire career: a weapon of mass destruction - a neutron bomb --
has been stolen by the most powerful gang of District B13.
Assigned to infiltrate the sector to defuse the bomb, Damien
recruits the help of an ex-criminal named Leito (David Belle) -
whose only goal is to save his sister from the clutches of the
same gang. In French with English subtitles. Vitals: Director:
Pierre Morel. Stars: Cyril Raffailli, David Belle. 2006, CC, MPAA
rating: R, 82 min., Sci-Fi Thriller, Box office gross: $1.181
million, Magnolia Home Entertainment.

KINKY BOOTS

English comedy about a conservative shoe factory that
turns to an over-the-top way to stay in business -- by
manufacturing the most sexy, provocative leather boots on the
market. For generations, the Price Family has made very sensible,
expertly made shoes for men. When the business is threatened by
cut-price shoddy imports and changing times, young factory head
Charlie Price turns to an unlikely business partner. His new
creative consultant is Lola, a cross-dressing cabaret singer
whose outrageous style at first doesn't go over well at the
conservative factory. But Lola's red-hot new boot designs revive
the factory's fortunes, and her larger-than-life personality
breathes fresh air into the lives of Charlie and his factory
workers as well. Vitals: Director: Julian Jarrold. Stars: Joel
Edgerton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sarah-Jane Potts. 2006, CC, MPAA
rating: PG-13, 107 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $1.349
million, Miramax.

UNITED 93
Honest and unflinching, the film tells the
unforgettable story of the heroic passengers and crew members who
prevented the terrorists from carrying out their plans for the
fourth hijacked plane on September 11, 2001. As on-ground
military and civilian teams scrambled to make sense of the
unfolding events, 40 everyday people who sat down as strangers
found the courage to stand up as one. A tribute to real-life
heroes. Vitals: Director: Paul Greengrass. Stars: Christian
Clemenson, Trish Gates, Polly Adams, Cheyenne Jackson, Opal
Alladin, Gary Commock. 2006, CC, MPAA rating: R, 91 min., Drama,
Box office gross: $31.269 million, Universal.

UNKNOWN WHITE MALE
Documentary about Doug Bruce, who one day
finds himself traveling on a NYC subway toward Coney Island with
no memory of who he is or where he is going. Throughout this
fascinating film, Doug struggles to remember his past and even
his own father mother, family and friends. After hearing about
his friend's condition, Rupert Murray decided to document Bruce's
actions, as Bruce tries to pull together the pieces of his past
and present life. Just imagine waking up tomorrow with no memory
of your parents, family and friends or any other since the day of
your birth. Imagine living without a history, without experience,
no relationships, no past troubles. Imagine starting your life
over again, making a new set of friends, finding new talents and
falling in love for the first time. Imagine what it's like to see
the world anew. On July 2, 2003 Doug Bruce left his apartment on
the Lower East Side at about 8 p.m. No one knew where he was
going. No one knew he'd gone. He turned up 11 hours later, on the
New York subway heading to Coney Island. He had no idea who he
was. "Unknown White Male" is the startling story of a man who,
for no apparent reason, lost 37 years of life history, who lost
every memory of his friends, his family and every experience he
had ever known. This true story follows Doug in the hours and
months following his amnesia, as he tries to piece his life back
together and has to discover the world anew. An Official
Selection at the Sundance, Los Angeles, Chicago International and
Seattle Film Festivals, "Unknown White Male" received a national
2006 theatrical release, and Rupert Murray was nominated for the
Best Director Award from the Director's Guild of America. Vitals:
Director: Rupert Murray. 2006, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 88 min.,
Documentary, Box office gross: $.124 million, Wellspring/Genius
Products.

DVD COLLECTIBLES:

There's four incredible releases due this week from The Criterion
Collection: Jacques Tati's "Playtime," Federico Fellini's
"Amarcord," Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" and Terry Gilliam's
"Brazil.

** "Playtime"
(1967): With a treasure trove of clips,
documentaries, and interviews, this beautiful new transfer gives
us more insight into Tati's life and work than we've ever seen
before. For this monumental achievement, a nearly three-year-
long, bank-breaking production, Tati again thrust the endearingly
clumsy, resolutely old-fashioned Monsieur Hulot, along with a
host of other lost souls, into a bafflingly modernist Paris. With
every inch of its superwide frame crammed with hilarity and
inventiveness, Playtime is a lasting testament to a modern age
tiptoeing on the edge of oblivion. In a two-disc set with a new,
restored high-definition digital transfer. Extras include a video
introduction by Terry Jones; selected scene audio commentary by
film historian Philip Kemp; "Au-dela de Playtime," a short
documentary featuring archival behind-the-scenes footage from the
set; "Tati Story," a short biographical film about Tati; "Jacques
Tati in Monsieur Hulot's Work," a 1976 BBC Omnibus program; rare
audio interview with Tati from the U.S. debut of "Playtime";
"Cours du soir," a 1967 short film written by and starring Tati;
a new essay by Jonathan Rosenbaum; more.

** "Amarcord"
(1973) The Academy Award-winning film remains
one of cinema's enduring treasures, presented here newly restored
and in an eye-popping transfer. In his carnivalesque portrait of
provincial Italy during the Fascist period, Federico Fellini's
most personal film satirizes his youth and turns daily life into
a circus of social rituals, adolescent desires, male fantasies,
and political repartee, all set to Nino Rota's classic,
nostalgia-tinged score. The two-disc includes commentary by
scholars Peter Brunette and Frank Burke; a new 45-minute
documentary, "Fellini's Homecoming," on the complicated
relationship between Fellini, his hometown, and his past; video
interview with star Magali Noel; Fellini's drawings, and other
Amarcord ephemera; audio interviews with Fellini, his friends,
and family by Gideon Bachmann; a book featuring a new essay by
Sam Rohdie and Fellini's 1968 memoir, "La mia Rimini."

** "Seven Samurai"
(1954): The most widely seen Japanese film
in history has never been seen quite like this: hundreds of hours
of restoration has resulted in a magnificent new transfer of one
of the most beloved movie epics of all time. The story of a 16th
century village whose desperate inhabitants hire the eponymous
warriors to protect them from invading bandits, this three-hour
ride seamlessly weaves philosophy and entertainment, delicate
human emotions and relentless action into a rich, evocative, and
unforgettable tale of courage and hope. Extras on the three-disc
set include two audio commentaries; a 50-minute documentary on
the making of "Seven Samurai," part of the Toho Masterworks
series "Akira Kurosawa: It Is Wonderful to Create"; "My Life in
Cinema," a two-hour video conversation between Kurosawa and
Nagisa Oshima; "Seven Samurai: Origins and Influences," a new
documentary; gallery of behind-the-scenes images of Kurosawa at
work on "Seven Samurai," plus original poster art; theatrical
trailers and teaser; a booklet featuring essays by Peter Cowie,
Philip Kemp, Peggy Chiao, Alain Silver, Kenneth Turan, Stuart
Galbraith, Arthur Penn, Sidney Lumet, and an interview with star
Toshiro Mifune.

** "Brazil
(1985): Gathering footage from both the European
and American versions of his celebrated masterpiece, Terry
Gilliam has assembled the ultimate 142-minute director's cut of
Brazil-- now with a new anamorphic transfer and commentary, and
available for the first time as a single-disc release separate
from Criterion's exclusive three-disc "Brazil" box set. Gilliam's
bitter science-fiction parable for the Information Age has come
to be regarded as an anti-totalitarian cautionary tale equal to
the works of George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, and Kurt Vonnegut. The
film stars Jonathan Pryce, Robert De Niro, Katherine Helmond, Ian
Holm, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin, Ian Richardson, Peter Vaughan,
Kim Greist and Jim Broadbent. Gilliam provides commentary.

Other classic and would-be classics due this week are "Gojira
(Godzilla)" (1954), the original, uncut Japanese-language version
of Ishiro Honda's "Gojita," critically acclaimed as a bold anti-
nuclear allegory and one of the greatest monster movies of all
time -- released to DVD for the first time. Also included is the
English edited version "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" (1956)
starring Raymond Burr. Extras include commentary by Steve Ryfle
(author of "Japan's Favorite Mon-Star: The Unauthorized Biography
of Godzilla") and Ed Godziszewski (editor and publisher of
Japanese Giants magazine); a 16-page booklet that includes a
history of "Gojira," a "Making of the Godzilla Suit" featurette;
more; from Classic Media ... "All the King's Men" (1949),
director Robert Rossen's adaptation of William Penn Warren's
classic novel about the rise to power of ruthless politician
Willie Stark, starring Broderick Crawford, John Ireland, Mercedes
McCambridge, Joanne Dru and John Derek, from Sony ... Disney has
on offer a camp double feature about orphaned kids with
extraordinary supernatural powers, "Escape to Witch Mountain" and
"Return From Witch Mountain": "Escape to Witch Mountain" (1975)
stars Eddie Albert, Ray Milland, Donald Pleasence, Kim Richards,
Ike Eisenmann, Walter Barnes and Denver Pyle; "Return From Witch
Mountain" (1978) stars Bette Davis, Christopher Lee, Kim
Richards, Ike Eisenmann and Jack Soo; $19.99 ... Fox has four
Studio Classics releases due this week: "Frankenstein Unbound"
(1990), a cult favorite about a scientist who goes back in time
to meet Dr. Frankenstein, directed by Roger Corman and starring
John Hurt, Raul Julia, Nick Brimble, Bridget Fonda, Catherine
Rabett and Jason Patric; "Night Train to Paris" (1964), a
thriller about an ex-OSS officer's journey into post-WWII
espionage, starring Leslie Nielsen, Aliza Gur and Hugh Latimer;
"The Other" (1972), a psychological horror thriller about twin
brothers, one good, one very bad, directed by Robert Mulligan and
starring Uta Hagen and Diana Muldaur; and "Pretty Poison" (1968),
