ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES
FOR TUESDAY, August 1 -- MONDAY, August 7

THE SHAGGY DOG
Tim Allen gains a whole new point of view on becoming a great dad
when he's accidentally transformed into a great big dog in this
update of the Disney family comedy classic. Workaholic D.A. Dave
Douglas (Allen) takes on his latest legal case, involving a
criminal animal laboratory. It's yet another assignment that
takes him away from his wife (Kristin Davis) and kids (Zena Grey
and Spencer Breslin), who yearn for his attention. When Dave is
accidentally infected with a top-secret genetic-mutation serum,
everything changes: he morphs into the body of the family's new
pet Bearded Collie, and becomes the shaggy dog. With perked-up
ears and a front row seat on the family carpet, Dave is able to
gain an entirely different perspective into his family's secrets
and dreams. Inspired by what he discovers, Dave wants nothing
more than to stop the evil genius (Robert Downey Jr.) behind the
serum, and become man's -- and his family's -- best friend.
Vitals: Director: Brian Robbins. Stars: Tim Allen, Kristin Davis,
Zena Grey, Spencer Breslin, Danny Glover, Robert Downey Jr., Jane
Curtin, Philip Baker Hall. 2006, CC, MPAA rating: PG, 99 min.,
Comedy, Box office gross: $57.192 million, Disney.

V FOR VENDETTA
Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, the
film tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey
(Natalie Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation
by a masked man (Hugo Weaving) known only as "V." Profoundly
complex, V is at once literary, flamboyant, tender and
intellectual, a man dedicated to freeing his fellow citizens from
those who have terrorized them into compliance. He is also
bitter, revenge-seeking, lonely and violent, driven by a personal
vendetta. In his quest to free the people of England from the
corruption and cruelty that have poisoned their government, V
condemns the tyrannical nature of their appointed leaders and
invites his fellow citizens to join him in the shadows of
Parliament on November the 5th -- Guy Fawkes Day. On that day in
1605, Guy Fawkes was discovered in a tunnel beneath Parliament
with 36 barrels of gunpowder. He and his co-conspirators had
engineered the treasonous 'Gunpowder Plot' in response to the
tyranny of their government under James I. Fawkes and his fellow
saboteurs were hanged, drawn and quartered, and their plan to
take down their government never came to pass. In the spirit of
that rebellion, in remembrance of that day, V vows to carry out
the plot that Fawkes was executed for attempting on November 5th
in 1605: he will blow up Parliament. As Evey uncovers the truth
about V's mysterious past, she also discovers the truth about
herself -- and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of
his plan to ignite a revolution, bringing freedom and justice
back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption. Vitals:
Director: James McTeigue. Stars: Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving,
Stephen Rea, Stephen Fry, John Hurt, Tim Pigott-Smith, Rupert
Graves, Roger Allam, Ben Miles, Sinead Cusack. 2006, CC, MPAA
rating: R, 132 min., Sci Fi, Box office gross: $70.511 million,
Warner.

NEWS

COMING SOON:
Due September 19 is "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" (2006), a
documentary about cult musician Daniel Johnston, whose work has
been recorded by Beck, Wilco, Sonic Youth and Pearl Jam, but
whose life as a manic depressive has forced him to spend the last
three decades of his life in-and-out of mental institutions, from
Sony ... On October 10 Sony will release very dark comedy "Art
School Confidential," directed by Terry ("Ghost World") Zwigoff
and starring Max Minghella, Sophia Myles, John Malkovich, Jim
Broadbent, Matt Keeslar, Ethan Suplee, Joel David Moore, Anjelica
Huston, Steve Buscemi and Adam Scott.

DVD COLLECTIBLES:

The Highlight of the week is The Criterion Collection's release
of "Olivier's Shakespeare," a three-disc set with three
Shakespeare adaptations directed by (and starring) Laurence
Olivier: "Henry V" (1944), "Hamlet" (1948) and "Richard III"
(1955), all in high-definition digital transfers. Olivier
directed only five films in his 60-year acting career, yet his
three Shakespeare adaptations are still widely considered the
definitive film adaptations: his thrilling directorial debut,
"Henry V," stunned audiences with its vivid Technicolor and full-
throttle battle scenes; "Hamlet," which won the Academy Awards
for Best Picture and Actor in 1948 brought to stunning life
literature's greatest protagonist; and his legendary "Richard
III," thought by many to feature Olivier's most magnetic
performance. All three are presented for the first time together
on DVD in this deluxe gift set; $79.95.

Before his impressive character turns in "The Maltese Falcon" and
"Casablanca," Peter Lorre (who came to worldwide attention in
1931's "M") tried his hand at being a secret agent in the short-
lived Mr. Moto series of eight films. The series combined
mystery, action and exotic locales with inventive plots, dark
characters and wry humor. Fox will release this week the "Mr.
Moto Collection: Volume 1," a four-disc set with four "Mr. Moto"
films: "Think Fast, Mr. Moto" (1937), "Thank You. Mr. Moto"
(1937), "Mr. Moto Takes a Chance" (1938) and "Mysterious Mr.
Moto" (1938); $59.98. Extras include profiles of Lorre, "Mr.
Moto" director Norman Foster, producer Sol Wurtzel and stuntman
Harvey Parry.

"What the #$*! Do We (K)now!?" was a sleeper hit when released in
2004; the semi-documentary combined a storyline about a young
woman (Marlee Matlin ) searching for herself in the modern world
with interviews with scientists, mystics, philosophers,
journalists, and clergy, combining religion, psychology and
quantum physics in an absorbing foray into exploring (but not
answering) life's big questions. A Web site associated with the
film has also been an overwhelming success, and the folks at Fox
have wisely decided to tap the filmmakers for "What the Bleep!?:
Down the Rabbit Hole Edition," a three-disc set with a new five-
hour expanded version of the film. Extras include new interviews
as well as uncut interview footage not included in the original
version; and a "Quantum Mode" feature that randomly generates the
film content creating a unique experience on each viewing;
$26.98.

Sony this week will release the classic comedy "A Fish Called
Wanda" (1988, starring John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline
and Michael Palin) in a Collector's Edition two-disc set that
includes commentary by Cleese, Cleese's first farewell
performance, "Farewell Featurette: John Cleese," "Kulture
Vulture" documentary, "Something's Fishy" documentary, deleted
and alternate scenes, trivia track, "Mug Shots" photo gallery, "A
Message From John Cleese," Easter Eggs, and a collectible insert.

titles that help build fundamental skills a child should have
prior to entering pre-school or kindergarten; $19.99 each.

SPECIAL INTEREST:

"Broken Saints" (2006) is a flash-animated Internet graphic novel
that has become a cult favorite, a hypnotic visual feast that
fuses art with comic-style text, haunting music and cinematic
effects. The story follows four strangers who receive a series of
chilling apocalyptic visions and travel to a dark city in the
West where their fates, and the fate of the world, are linked
together; told in 24 episodes in a four-disc set, $49.98 from Fox
... "Burning Man: Beyond Black Rock" (2005) is a documentary on
the annual gathering in the Nevada desert that has evolved from a
fringe counter-culture event into a global community of artists
and social revolutionaries. For the past two decades a massive
city (with emergency services, electricity, street signs,
newspapers and radio broadcasts) rises in the barren Nevada
desert, created by and attracting some 35,000 artists and
visionaries. For one week it's a community free of commerce,
bound by a social contract of tolerance and cooperation and
dedicated to the transforming power of art and self-expression.
Then it disappears without a trace until the next summer. From
Lightyear Entertainment; $19.95 ... "Seattle Seahawks NFC
Champions" (2006) is a documentary about the Seattle Seahawks'
2005 championship season; $19.98 from Warner ... "MacArthur"
(1999) is an American Experience documentary that explores the
triumphs and hardships of the career of General Douglas
MacArthur, from WGBH Boston Video.
