ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES FOR TUESDAY, July 25 -- MONDAY, July 31
ASK THE DUST Colin Farrell is Arturo Bandini, a young would-be writer who comes to Depression-era Los Angeles to make a name for himself. While there, he meets beautiful barmaid Camilla (Salma Hayek), a Mexican immigrant who hopes for a better life by marrying a wealthy American. Both are trying to escape the stigma of their ethnicity in blue-blood California. The passion that arises between them is palpable -- if they could only set aside their ambitions and submit to it. Vitals: Director: Robert Towne. Stars: Colin Farrell, Salma Hayek), Donald Sutherland, Eileen Atkins. 2006, CC, MPAA rating: R, 116 min., Drama, Box office gross: $.742 million, Paramount.
BENCHWARMERS, THE Three nerds (Rob Schneider, David Spade and Jon Heder) team up to create a three-man baseball team in an effort to make up for their lack of athleticism when they were younger. The determined trio compete against a full squad of elementary school baseball players and along the way, develop a large following of left-out kids as they head into a high-stakes, winner takes all game against the best little league in the state. In order to prepare for the tournament, they hire baseball legend Reggie Jackson to train them. Reggie works with them on timing by having them sit in the back of a truck as it drives down the street, swinging a bat and demolishing mailboxes. He also teaches them fielding by tossing a hot potato at them, which they catch barehanded and toss quickly to one another. Amazingly, the training pays off and they become an inspiration to benchwarmers everywhere. Vitals: Director: Dennis Dugan. Stars: Rob Schneider, David Spade, Jon Heder, Jon Lovitz, Craig Kilborn, Molly Sims. 2006, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 80 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $57.651 million, Sony.
FINAL DESTINATION 3 On what should be one of the happiest days of her life, high school senior Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) joins her friends for a graduation night celebration at a local amusement park. As they're about to board a roller coaster, Wendy is suddenly spooked. Her boyfriend Jason (Jesse Moss) reassures her that it's merely the act of relinquishing control that's giving her the jitters. Wendy overcomes her fear, but no sooner has the pneumatic harness descended, securing her in her seat, than Wendy experiences a vivid premonition of a fatal accident in which the roller coaster becomes a death trap for her and her friends. Emerging from her terrifying vision and still on the ride platform, Wendy freaks out and demands to be let off. Her classmate, Kevin (Ryan Merriman), who's seated beside her, feels compelled to accompany Wendy. As they're leaving, Lewis (Texas Battle) taunts Kevin, calling him a wimp. Insults turn to blows, others join the scuffle, and soon a handful of students are forcibly ejected from the ride. As they watch from below, Wendy's premonition proves nightmarishly true -- the coaster careens out of control, and all those aboard perish. But that's only the beginning. As in the previous editions of the franchise, those who survive the disaster discover that fate is hard to escape. They were meant to die ... and death is not so easily cheated. Wendy's friends lose their lives via decapitation, squashing, and even in a tanning parlor, while Wendy tries to figure out how to save the day. For fans of the first two outings only. Vitals: Director: James Wong. Stars: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ryan Merriman, Kris Lemche, Alexz Johnson, Sam Easton, Jesse Moss, Gina Holden. 2006, CC, MPAA rating: R, 93 min., Horror Thriller, Box office gross: $53.511 million, New Line.

DVD COLLECTIBLES: From the folks at The Criterion Collection comes Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's beloved classic "A Canterbury Tale." The film is a profoundly personal journey to Powell's bucolic birthplace of Kent, England. Set amidst the tumult of the World War II, the film follows three modern-day incarnations of Chaucer's pilgrims -- a melancholy "landgirl," a plainspoken American GI, and a resourceful British sergeant -- who are waylaid in the English countryside and forced to solve a bizarre village crime en route to the mythical town. "A Canterbury Tale" has acquired a following of devotees passionate enough to qualify as pilgrims themselves. The two-disc set features a new high- definition digital transfer from Michael Powell's re-edited American version; $39.95.
"The War Game" has to be one of the scariest movies of all time. Director Peter Watkins was commissioned to create a drama depicting the effects of a nuclear attack on England. Using hand- held cameras, he instead created a devastatingly real and harrowing mock-documentary that horrified viewers for its verisimilitude in showing the death and destruction that would be wrought by an attack on England. The BBC banned the film, and it subsequently had difficulty getting aired elsewhere, including the States. I first saw the film in 1966 and had nightmares for weeks after. The 49-minute film is piggybacked with "Culloden" (1964), Watkins' reconstruction of the 1746 battle in which the Scottish Highlanders were slaughtered by the English; on one disc from New Yorker Video; $39.95.
Will Rogers was an American original: part Cherokee Indian, he was a cowboy, a trick roper, a Ziegfeld Follies star, a radio commentator, a columnist, a philosopher, a philanthropist and a Hollywood movie star. To honor the simple wisdom of this iconoclastic Everyman, Fox has put together "The Will Rogers Collection: Volume 1," a four disc set with four of Rogers' 1935 filmed outings, restored and remastered: "Doubting Thomas," "In Old Kentucky," "Life Begins at Forty" and "Steamboat Round the Bend"; $59.98.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of TV's most thoughtful and enigmatic series, A&E Home Video has put together "The Prisoner Megaset: 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition," a 10- disc set with all 17 episodes, plus bonus footage; "The Prisoner Video Companion"; original production and promotion materials; rare location footage; and a new 60-page Limited Edition series companion guide, fully illustrated with extensive episode guides and complete with liner notes detailing the many hidden mysteries behind the series, plus a new, deluxe fold-out map of The Village; $139.95.
In its ongoing celebration of America's "dimpled darling," Fox has put together "The Shirley Temple Collection, Volume Four," a three-disc set with "Captain January" (1936), "Just Around the Corner" (1938) and "Susannah of the Mounties" (1939), in original black and white and colorized versions, $29.98 or $14.98 each ... On a scarier note, Anchor Bay will release "Halloween: 25 Years of Terror" (2006), a two-disc set retrospective that chronicles the man and the movies, loaded with extras; "Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers" (1988), a DiviMax special edition featuring the first ever high-definition transfer of the film; and "Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers" (1989), also a DiviMax special edition.
