ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES FOR TUESDAY, July 11 -- MONDAY, July 17
BASIC INSTINCT 2 In this rude and exploitive psychological thriller, best-selling crime novelist Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone) once again finds herself on the wrong side of the law after re-locating from San Francisco to London: She's been linked to the mysterious death of a famous sports star. Dr. Michael Glass (David Morrissey), a respected London criminal psychiatrist, is brought in by Scotland Yard detective Roy Washburn (David Thewlis) to perform a psychiatric profile and evaluation of Tramell. Physically drawn to Tramell and mentally intrigued by her, Glass, against the advice of his mentor, Dr. Milena Gardosh (Charlotte Rampling), is quickly sucked into her web of lies and seduction -- the professional boundaries between the two are obliterated when she uncovers his "basic instincts." As people around him are murdered one by one, a deadly battle of wits ensues between Glass and Tramell, climaxing as Glass faces a choice that will change both their lives forever. Vitals: Director: Michael Caton-Jones. Stars: Sharon Stone, David Morrissey, Charlotte Rampling, David Thewlis, Hugh Dancy. 2006, CC, MPAA rating: R, 114 min., Drama, Box office gross: $5.851 million, Sony.
TRISTRAM SHANDY: A COCK AND BULL STORY Flipping back and forth between the 18th century and the hapless efforts of the 21st century filmmakers, "Tristram Shandy" is the making of a movie adapted from the notoriously unfilmable English literature masterpiece, "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentlemen," written by Laurence Sterne. The story begins with Tristram Shandy (Steve Coogan) narrating his life story as he sees it. Crammed with literary jokes and dark humor, Shandy's warped childhood tales are constantly interrupted by his family and household, inadvertently revealing far more about himself than any conventional autobiography. At the dramatic moment of Tristram's birth, the 1st Assistant Director calls cut, marking the end of a filming day on the set of Tristram Shandy. We then see Steve Coogan, the other actors and crew through the course of a chaotic evening on set. Steve Coogan's wife arrives with their six-month-old baby, a journalist is chasing him about a scandalous story, his agent has arrived with a load of Hollywood scripts and the film financiers are threatening to pull the plug. A clever, postmodern take on the construction of a film, from an intricate hilariously complex autobiographical novel. Vitals: Director: Michael Winterbottom. Stars: Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon, Gillian Anderson, Jeremy Northam , James Fleet, Ian Hart, Shirley Henderson. 2006, CC, MPAA rating: R, 94 min., Literary Drama, Box office gross: $1.247 million, HBO Video.

COMING SOON: Due August 8 is "The Lost City," directed by Andy Garcia and starring Garcia, Bill Murray, Dustin Hoffman and Ines Sastre in a story of pre- revolutionary Cuba, from Magnolia Home Entertainment ... Director Sydney Pollack's incisive documentary "Sketches of Frank Gehry" arrives August 22 from Sony ... Also on that date Fox will release the Lindsay Lohan teen comedy "Just My Luck" ... On September 12 Buena Vista will kick home the soccer film "Goal! The Dream Begins," starring Kuno Becker, Alessandro Nivola, Miriam Colon, Marcel Iure, Stephen Dillane, and Anna Friel ... DVD COLLECTIBLES: Milestone Films and Video will release this week "Beyond the Rocks," the recently rediscovered 1922 silent romance starring film legends Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino. Long considered one of the great "lost" films from the Hollywood golden age, only a one-minute fragment was known to exist in the Nederlands Filmmuseum. The film, just for its star power alone, has been one of the most sought-after movies of the silent era. Lost for more than 80 years, film catalogers at the Nederlands Filmmuseum were amazed to find the first two nitrate reels of "Beyond the Rocks" when inventorying a vast collection of nitrate bequeathed to them by a film collector from Haarlem. The Filmmuseum staff then searched for many more months until they found and identified all the missing reels of the film. "Beyond the Rocks" has been lovingly restored and features a brand-new score by the well-known Dutch composer Henny Vrienten; other extras include an introduction by Martin Scorsese; "The Delicious Little Devil" (1919) silent with Valentino; stills gallery from Swanson's personal collection; 85-minute wire recording of Swanson from 1955; interviews, articles and videos of the restoration process; more. Also from Milestone this week is "Electric Edwardians: The Films of Mitchell & Kenyon," a compilation of the footage of filmmakers Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon, who were hired in the early days of the cinema (when still a novelty) to shoot footage of local people going about their everyday activities. These films would be shown later at nearby fairgrounds, town halls and neighborhood theaters. Workers, school children, sports fans and seaside vacationers all flocked to see themselves miraculously captured on screen. The 85-minutes of footage from 1900-1913 is like taking a time machine to the past. Both Milestone releases have $29.95 price tags.
Two interesting outings from The Criterion Collection: "Koko: A Talking Gorilla" (1978) a documentary about the controversial experiment in which a gorilla would be taught the basics of human communication through American sign language; directed by Barbet Schroeder $29.95 .... and "Yi Yi" (2000), Taiwanese director Edward Yang's sweeping look at a middle-class family in Taipei during the course of one year, beginning with a wedding and ending with a funeral. The intimate epic is at once warm, sprawling, and dazzling; $39.95.
