ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES FOR TUESDAY, July 4 -- MONDAY, July 10
LIBERTINE, THE Johnny Depp stars as the scandalously decadent John Wilmot, the second Earl of Rochester. The film follows the Earl's adventures in 17th century London. A close confidante of the high-living King Charles II (John Malkovich), the Earl delights in lampooning England's royals with his subversive wit and scandalizing London society with his sexual escapades -- all the while reveling in getting away with anything he can. But then the Earl falls in love with the brilliant and fiercely independent Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton), the theatrical protege he plans to turn into England's biggest star. Their affair and the writing of a scurrilous play that blisteringly and bawdily lampoons the very monarch who commissioned it will be the start of the Earl's plunge from the heights of social celebrity to the depths of ruin. Vitals: Director: Laurence Dunmore. Stars: Johnny Depp, Samantha Morton, John Malkovich, Paul Ritter, Stanley Townsend, Francesca Annis, Rosamund Pike. 2005, CC, MPAA rating: R, 114 min., Drama, Box office gross: $4.829 million, Weinstein Co.
MARILYN HOTCHKISS BALLROOM DANCING & CHARM SCHOOL The moving story of Frank Keane (Robert Carlyle), a widowed man consumed by his wife's death. But everything changes when he pulls over on a rural highway to help a dying stranger (John Goodman) entangled in a car wreck. En route to fulfill a forty- year promise to his childhood sweetheart, the stranger shares a compelling tale of adolescent love replete with first kisses, youthful innocence and ballroom dancing. Frank promises to fulfill the stranger's wish and finds himself at the doorsteps of Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School. It's here that he finds an odd path to a new beginning when he meets Meredith (Maris Tomei) and the infectious world of dance, which allow his heart to open up and find love again. Vitals: Director: Randall Miller. Stars: Robert Carlyle, Marisa Tomei, John Goodman, Mary Steenburgen, Sean Astin, Danny DeVito, Donnie Wahlberg, David Paymer, Camryn Manheim, Adam Arkin, Sonia Braga, Elden Henson, Ernie Hudson, Miguel Sandoval. 2006, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 103 min., Drama, Box office gross: $.092 million, Sony, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental.
MATADOR, THE Julian Noble (Pierce Brosnan) is a hit man who's very good at what he does. He's in Mexico City doing another job but sadly for Julian, he has reached a low point in his life -- the murder business has all but killed him. Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear) is also in Mexico City on business, although a decidedly different kind of business. Danny lives in Denver with his wife Bean (Hope Davis), and while they may have troubles financially, there is a youthful lust between them that belies 10 years of marriage. Danny finds himself in Mexico City for a business opportunity whose outcome could be the difference between solving all his financial problems or falling even deeper into debt. One night, at the hotel bar, these two men meet. Before long, they find themselves involved in a strange friendship -- built on the dark and drunken honesty shared among strangers who believe they will never see each other in the light of day. Spanning four countries, six months and many margaritas, the dark comedy takes the hit man film and spins it on its head, creating a character- driven story strange and full of unexpected heart. Vitals: Director: Richard Shepard. Stars: Pierce Brosnan, Arlin Miller, Azucena Medina, Jonah Meyerson, Greg Kinnear, Hope Davis, Philip Baker Hall. 2005, CC, MPAA rating: R, 96 min., Dark Comedy, Box office gross: $12.570 million, Weinstein Co.
