NEWS

COMING SOON:
Due July 11 is the rude psychological thriller "Basic Instinct
2," starring Sharon Stone, David Morrissey, Charlotte Rampling
and David Thewlis, in rated and unrated editions, from Sony ...
on August 1 Warner will release the sci-fi thriller "V for
Vendetta," starring Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea,
Stephen Fry and John Hurt.

DVD COLLECTIBLES:
Due from The Criterion Collection is one of the finest films of
all time: Luis Bunuel's "Viridiana" (1961), starring Silvia
Pinal, Francisco Rabal and Fernando Rey. Banned in Spain and
denounced by the Vatican, surrealist genius Bunuel's hilarious
vision of life as a beggar's banquet is regarded by many as his
masterpiece. Young novice Viridiana does her utmost to maintain
her Catholic principles, but her lecherous uncle and a motley
assemblage of paupers force her to confront the limits of her
idealism. Highlight of the film is, indeed, the blasphemous
beggar's banquet. Winner of the Palme d'or at the 1961 Cannes
Film Festival, this anticlerical free-for-all is as shocking
today as ever. Also due this week from Criterion is "Harlan
County, U.S.A.," Barbara Kopple's absorbing film that won a best
documentary Oscar in 1976. In a small town in Kentucky, in 1973,
when the Brookside coal miners voted to join the United Mine
Workers union, The Duke Power Co. refused to sign the union's
contact. The struggle that broke out between the company and the
workers was brilliantly documented by Kopple. With a haunting
country and bluegrass soundtrack, the film is a powerful,
sometimes heartbreaking record of the 13-month struggle between a
community fighting to survive and a corporation dedicated to the
bottom line.

Warner makes more waves with their packaged sets with the release
of "The Bette Davis Collection Volume Two," a seven-disc set with
"Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" two-disc special edition
(restored and remastered), "Jezebel" (restored and remastered),
new-to-DVD titles "Old Acquaintance," "Marked Woman," "The Man
Who Came to Dinner" and the excellent Turner Movie Classics'
"Stardust: The Bette Davis Story." The set sells for $59.92;
"Baby Jane" is available separately for $26.99; the other four
titles are available separately for $19.99; "Stardust" is
exclusive to the set. And, of course, each disc is loaded with
extras, including shorts, cartoons, featurettes and
documentaries.

original roles; two new documentaries: "Armed and Deadly: The
