ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES
FOR TUESDAY, January 10 -- MONDAY, January 16
CONSTANT GARDENER, THE
Based on the best-selling John le Carre novel and from the
Academy Award-nominated director of "City of God." In a remote
area of Northern Kenya, the region's most dedicated activist, the
brilliant and passionate Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weisz), has been
found brutally murdered. Tessa's traveling companion, a local
doctor, appears to have fled the scene, and the evidence points
to a crime of passion. Sandy Woodrow (Danny Huston), Sir Bernard
Pellegrin (Bill Nighy) and the other members of the British High
Commission assume that Tessa's widower, their mild-mannered and
unambitious colleague Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes), will leave
the matter to their discretion. They could not be more wrong.
This career diplomat's equilibrium has been exploded by the loss
of the woman he was deeply devoted to. They were opposites whose
attraction sustained a marriage, the memories of which now spur
Justin to take decisive action for the first time in his life and
diplomatic career. Haunted by remorse and jarred by rumors of his
wife's infidelities, Justin surprises himself by plunging
headlong into a dangerous odyssey. Determined to clear his wife's
name and "finish what she started," Justin embarks on a crash
course to learn about the pharmaceutical industry, whose crimes
Tessa was on the verge of uncovering, and journeys across two
continents in search of the trust. His eyes are soon opened to a
vast conspiracy at once deadly and commonplace, one that has
claimed innocent lives -- and is about to put his own at risk.
Director: Fernando Meirelles. Stars: Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz,
Hubert Kounde, Danny Huston, Daniele Harford. 2005, CC, MPAA
rating: R, 129 min., Thriller, Box office gross: $33.221 million,
Universal, $29.98 VHS SRP.
DIRTY DEEDS
It's homecoming weekend at Roosevelt High School and rumors are
spreading fast about the legendary Dirty Deeds -- 10 increasingly
outrageous and raucous challenges that have to be completed from
dusk to dawn on Friday night. No one has attempted the Deeds for
15 years and for good reason: the last guy to try was never heard
from or seen again. Now Roosevelt senior Zach (Milo Ventimiglia)
faces the ultimate challenge from his arch-rival, football team
captain Dan Lawton. In a moment of inspired chivalry to win the
heart of the stunning and hard-to-get Meg (Lacey Chabert), Zack
decides to be the first guy to complete the mythical quest and
live to tell about it. The first deed is easy, involving a can of
beer and a minor brush with local law enforcement. But things
soon spiral out of control, and the Deeds quickly take Zach on an
unpredictable adventure. Taunted by Lawton, Zach finds himself
contending with stolen cars, dead bodies, the bra of Roosevelt's
former homecoming queen, a ferocious mob boss, a dim-witted cop
and a persistent vice principal. Zach's confidence begins to
fade, but his determination is revived when Meg makes clear how
impressed she has been with his courage under fire. But even
Meg's affection may not be enough to get Zach through the last of
the Dirty Deeds. Director: David Kendall. Stars: Milo
Ventimiglia, Lacey Chabert, Charles Durning, Matthew Carey, Alex
Solowitz, Zoe Saldana. 2005, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 85 min.,
Teen action comedy, Box office gross: $0.145 million, Freestyle
Home Entertainment, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental.
HUSTLE & FLOW
Redemptive story of a streetwise Memphis hustler trying to find
his voice and realize his long-buried dreams. Though DJay
(Terrence Howard) has always had a way with words, that gift has
long been misused; this philosopher-hustler lives a dead-end life
at the fringes of society. Anything more feels out of reach.
Still, DJay wonders what happened to all the big dreams he had
for his life. A chance encounter with an old friend, Key (Anthony
Anderson), a sound engineer who has always wanted to make it in
the music business, spurs DJay: if he's ever going to make his
mark, it has to happen now. He begins to write down his freestyle
raps and the two team up with Shelby (DJ Qualls), a church
musician with a beat machine, to lay down bass-thumping crunk
tracks. With the impending visit to Memphis of hometown platinum-
selling rapper Skinny Black (Ludacris), DJay has to make one last
hustle if he's ever going to flow. Director: Craig Brewer. Stars:
Terrence Howard, Anthony Anderson, Taryn Manning, Taraji P.
Henson, DJ Qualls, Paula Jai Parker, Elise Neal, Isaac Hayes,
Ludacris. 2005, CC, MPAA rating: R, 116 min., Musical drama, Box
office gross: $22.125 million, Paramount, No VHS SRP, Priced for
rental.
RED EYE
Lisa Reisert (Rachel McAdams) hates to fly, but the terror that
awaits her on the night flight to Miami has nothing to do with a
fear of flying. Upon boarding the plane, Lisa is pleasantly
surprised to find that she is seated next to Jackson (Cillian
Murphy), the seemingly charming man with whom she had shared a
drink -- and perhaps even a brief flirtation -- in the airport
terminal. But moments after takeoff, Jackson drops his facade and
menacingly reveals the real reason he's on board: He is an
operative in a plot to kill the Deputy Secretary of Homeland
Security ... and Lisa is the key to its success. If she refuses
to cooperate, her own father will be killed by an assassin
awaiting a call from Jackson. Trapped within the confines of a
jet at 30,000 feet, Lisa has nowhere to run and no way to summon
help without endangering her father, her fellow passengers and
her own life. As the miles tick by, Lisa knows she is running out
of time as she desperately looks for a way to thwart her ruthless
captor and stop a terrible murder. Director: Wes Craven. Stars:
Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy, Brian Cox, Jayma Mays. 2005, CC,
MPAA rating: PG-13, 85 min., Thriller, Box office gross: $57.859
million, DreamWorks, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental.
SARABAND
Follow-up to Bergman's 1974's "Scenes From a Marriage." In
"Saraband," Marianne and Johan meet again after 30 years without
contact, when Marianne suddenly feels a need to see her ex-
husband again. She decides to visit Johan at his old summer house
in the western province of Dalarna. And so, one beautiful autumn
day, there she is, beside his reclining chair, waking him with a
light kiss. Also living at the summer house are Johan's son
Henrik and Henrik's daughter Karin. Henrik is giving his daughter
cello lessons and already sees her future as staked out.
Relations between father and son are very strained, but both are
protective of Karin. They are all still mourning Anna, Henrik's
much-loved wife, who died two years ago, yet who, in many ways,
remains present among them. Marianne soon realizes that things
are not all as they should be, and she finds herself unwillingly
drawn into a complicated and upsetting power struggle. In Swedish
with English subtitles. Director: Ingmar Bergman. Stars: Liv
Ullmann, Erland Josephson, Borje Ahlstedt, Julia Dufvenius,
Gunnel Fred. 2005, CC, MPAA rating: R, 120 min., Drama, Box
office gross: $0.645 million, Sony, No VHS SRP, Priced for
rental.
TRANSPORTER 2
Jason Statham returns in his signature role: ex-Special Forces
operative Frank Martin, aka "The Transporter," who hires himself
out as a mercenary transporter who moves goods -- human or
otherwise. Very simply, he delivers ... no questions asked. Frank
has relocated from the French Mediterranean to Miami, where as a
favor to a friend he is driving for the wealthy Billings family.
There's very little that can surprise The Transporter, but young
Jack Billings has done just that; Frank has unexpectedly bonded
with Jack, age 6, whom he drives to and from school. But when
Jack is kidnapped, Martin must use all his skills to bring him to
safety and thwart the kidnappers' master plan to release a virus
that will kill anyone with whom it comes in contact. Director:
