ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES
FOR TUESDAY, December 13 -- MONDAY, December 19
BAD NEWS BEARS
Grizzled former professional baseball player Morris Buttermaker
(Billy Bob Thornton) is bribed by a straitlaced lawyer (Marcia
Gay Harden) to coach the Bears, a woefully inept youth baseball
team. Buttermaker's got to find a way to drive this gang of 12
misfits to a championship against their hated rivals: the Yankees
and their overbearing coach (Greg Kinnear). From the director who
brought you "The School of Rock" with the writing team behind
"Bad Santa" comes a 2005 homage to an irreverent 1976 comedy
(starring the great Walter Matthau). Not a bad outing. Director:
Richard Linklater. Stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Greg Kinnear,
Marcia Gay Harden, Sammi Kane Kraft, Ridge Canipe, Brandon
Craggs, Jeffrey Davies. 2005, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 113 min.,
Comedy, Box office gross: $32.781 million, Paramount, No VHS SRP,
Priced for rental.
BAXTER, THE
Romantic comedy chronicles the chaotic two weeks prior to the
wedding of Elliot Sherman (Michael Showalter), a conservative,
risk-averse guy who is a quintessential "Baxter" -- a guy who
never actually gets the girl. Director: Michael Showalter. Stars:
Michael Showalter, Elizabeth Banks, Michelle Williams, Justin
Theroux, Zak Orth, Michael Ian Black, Catherine Lloyd Burns,
Peter Dinklage, Paul Rudd. 2005, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 91 min.,
Romantic comedy, Box office gross: $0.176 million, Sony, No VHS
SRP, Priced for rental.
BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY, THE
Compelling story of a young boy's journey to find his place in
the world. A young boy (half Vietnamese, half American) leaves
his mother, his native land and all that he knows and stows away
on a boat headed for America. The emotional journey will not only
lead him to his father, but to a new life in a brand new world.
Director: Hans Petter Moland. Stars: Nick Nolte, Tim Roth, Bai
Ling. 2005, CC, MPAA rating: R, 125 min., Sony, Box office gross:
$0.442 million, Sony, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental.
40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN, THE
Forty-year-old Andy Stitzer (Steve Carrell) has done quite a few
things in his life. He's got a cushy job stamping invoices at an
electronics superstore, a nice apartment with a proud collection
of action figures and comic books, good friends, a nice attitude.
But there's just one little thing he hasn't quite gotten around
to doing yet -- something most people have done by his age:
Andy's never, ever had sex. For Andy it's not a big deal. But for
Andy's buds at the store, it sure is. They consider it their duty
to help Andy out of his dire situation and go to great lengths to
help him. But nothing proves effective enough to lure their
friend out of lifelong chastity until he meets Trish (Catherine
Keener), a 40-year-old mother of three. Andy's friends are
psyched by the possibility that "it" may finally happen ... until
they hear that Andy and Trish have begun their relationship based
on a mutual no-sex policy. Director: Judd Apatow. Stars: Steve
Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, Seth Rogen,
Elizabeth Banks, Leslie Mann, Jane Lynch. 2005, CC, MPAA rating:
R, 116 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $100.000 million,
Universal, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental.
ISLAND, THE
Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) is a resident of a seemingly
utopian but contained facility in the mid-21st century. Like all
of the inhabitants of this carefully controlled environment,
Lincoln hopes to be chosen to go to the "The Island" --
reportedly the last uncontaminated spot on the planet. But
Lincoln soon discovers that everything about his existence is a
lie. He and all of the other inhabitants of the facility are
actually human clones whose only purpose is to provide "spare
parts" for their original human counterparts. Realizing it is
only a matter of time before he's "harvested," Lincoln makes a
daring escape with a beautiful fellow resident named Jordan Two-
Delta (Scarlett Johansson). Relentlessly pursued by the forces of
the sinister institute that once housed them, Lincoln and Jordan
engage in a race for their lives to literally meet their makers.
Director: Michael Bay. Stars: Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson,
Djimon Hounsou, Sean Bean, Steve Buscemi, Michael Clarke Duncan.
2005, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 136 min., Science Fiction, Box
office gross: $35.799 million, DreamWorks, No VHS SRP, Priced for
rental.
PRETTY PERSUASION
Joyce (Evan Rachel Wood) is an insanely intelligent, wildly
funny, shockingly cruel and sexy-beyond-her-years Beverly Hills
teenager who will stop at nothing to become famous, including
accusing her drama teacher (Ron Livingston) of sexual harassment.
Believing the world is an orchestra and she is the conductor,
Joyce masterfully manipulates all those around her. She convinces
her two best friends to join her in a campaign against their
befuddled teacher. Joyce entangles the entire Beverly Hills
community in her carefully woven web of seduction and deceit in
this clever comedy. Director: Marcos Siega. Stars: Evan Rachel
Wood, Ron Livingston, James Woods, Jane Krakowski, Elizabeth
Harnois, Danny Comden, Michael Hitchcock, Adi Schnall. 2005, CC,
MPAA rating: R, 104 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $0.289
million, Sony, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental.
ROLL BOUNCE
Xavier Smith (Bow Wow), also known as X, is a young roller wiz
who, along with his crew, once ruled supreme at their South Side
of Chicago rink, the Palisades Gardens. But when the doors of
their favorite hangout close, it marks the end of an era and the
beginning of another that sees the boys venturing into completely
foreign territory: the North Side's swanky Sweetwater Roller
Rink, with its sleek, well-to-do roller-boys and gorgeous girls
in short-shorts. For X and his friends, Sweetwater is a brave new
world that gives way to an impossible dream: to win the rink's
annual Roller Jam Skate-Off. It's more than just a chance to take
home a trophy for X -- it's his opportunity to fulfill the
potential his mother always saw in him and prove his own self-
worth. Director: Malcolm D. Lee. Stars: Bow Wow, Brandon T.
Jackson, Marcus T. Paulk, Rick Gonzalez. 2005, CC, MPAA rating:
PG-13, 112 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $17.171 million, Fox,
$27.98 VHS SRP.
SAINT RALPH
Combines the themes of faith, redemption and sportsmanship in a
touching story about a young boy whose search for a miracle leads
him to enter the Boston Marathon and discover a talent for long
distance running. Fourteen-year-old Ralph Walker has a case of
raging hormones that land him in all kinds of mischievous
trouble. His Catholic school headmaster makes him join the track
team where he discovers a gift for long distance running. When
told that his comatose mother won't recover without a miracle,
Ralph decides to create one -- by setting out to win the Boston
Marathon. Little does he know he's in for the run of his life.
Director: Michael McGowan. Stars: Campbell Scott, Jennifer Tilly,
Adam Butcher. 2005, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 98 min., Drama, Box
office gross: $0.777 million, Sony, No VHS SRP, Priced for
rental.
VALIANT
Delightful animated family film. During World War II, England
communicated with the French Resistance and Allied troops in
Europe using the Royal Pigeon Service -- carrier pigeons that
went through a rigorous training regimen. This is the story of
Valiant, a comically clumsy misfit of a pigeon, Valiant, who
sneaks his way into the Royal Pigeon Service, eager to contribute
his efforts to the needs of his country, even though he is vastly
unqualified to do so. Immediately given an assignment, Valiant's
job turns out to be one of the most important of the war ...
carrying essential messages from the French to the Allied forces
who are about to storm the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Filled
with action, humor, emotion and memorable characters. Director:
Gary Chapman. Voices of Ewan McGregor, Ricky Gervais, Tim Curry,
Jim Broadbent, Hugh Laurie, John Cleese, John Hurt. 2005, CC,
MPAA rating: G, 76 min., Animated, Box office gross: $19.116
million, Buena Vista, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental.

Lawson. On VHS and DVD from First Look Home Entertainment.
FOREIGN:
First Run features has added two more titles to its
groundbreaking slate of titles form the German DEFA Collection
(the state-run studios of the former German Democratic Republic -
- East Germany). This week's offerings are films that explore the
realities of Nazi Germany: "Naked Among Wolves" (1963), based on
a true event and on the novel by Buchenwald survivor Bruno Apitz,
was the first German film about life and death in a concentration
camp. Jankowski, a Polish prisoner from Auschwitz, arrives at the
Buchenwald concentration camp hiding a little boy inside a
suitcase. When the prisoners and members of the camp's covert
resistance group discover the boy, his innocence moves many, yet
his possible discovery by the camp guards threatens them all.
Stars Academy Award nominee Armin Mueller-Stahl in one of his
first film roles. "Your Unknown Brother" (1981) is a landmark
film exploring the role of the individual in confronting anti-
fascism. It was invited to the Cannes Film Festival but,
ironically (and tellingly), it was withdrawn by the East German
authorities, who from that point undermined the artistic
activities of director Ulrich Weiss, an independent, untamable
and unpredictable talent. After being released from a Nazi camp
for political prisoners, Arnold Clasen returns to Hamburg to lead
a quiet life. He contacts Renate, with whom he is still in love.
And, although he is aware of the danger of doing so, he begins a
friendship with Walter, who is active in the resistance. But as
old comrades are arrested one after another, Arnold begins to
suspect that Walter, who remains unscathed, has betrayed them. On
DVD, $24.95 each.
