ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES
FOR TUESDAY, December 6 -- MONDAY, December 12

CINDERELLA MAN
In the middle of the Great Depression, when an America in the
grips of a devastating economic downturn was nearly brought to
its knees, there came along a most unlikely hero who had crowds
cheering on their feet -- as he proved just how hard a man would
fight to win a second chance for his family and himself. That
common-man hero was James J. Braddock -- a.k.a. the "Cinderella
Man" -- who was to become one of the most surprising and
inspirational sports legends in history. By the early 1930s, the
impoverished ex-prizefighter was seemingly as broken-down,
beaten-up and out-of-luck as much of the rest of the American
populace. Like so many others, Braddock had hit rock bottom. His
career appeared to be finished, he was unable to pay the bills,
the only thing that really mattered to him -- his family -- was
in danger, and he was even forced to go on Public Relief. But
deep inside, Jim Braddock never relinquished his determination.
Driven by love, honor and an incredible dose of grit, he willed
an impossible dream to come true. In a last-chance bid to help
his family, Braddock returned to the ring. In bout after bout,
the talk was that poor Jim Braddock was criminally outmatched and
perilously in over his head. Except that Braddock, fueled by
something beyond mere competition, kept winning. Suddenly, the
ordinary working man became the mythic athlete who could not
lose. Carrying the hopes and dreams of the disenfranchised on his
shoulders, Braddock rocketed through the ranks, until he chose to
do the unthinkable: take on the heavyweight champ of the world,
the unstoppable Max Baer, renowned for having killed two men in
the ring. Director: Ron Howard. Stars: Russell Crowe, Renee
Zellweger, Paul Giamatti, Craig Bierko. 2005, CC, MPAA rating:
PG-13, 144 min., Drama, Box office gross: $60.317 million,
Universal, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental.

DUKES OF HAZZARD, THE
Fun-lovin', fast-drivin', good ol' boy cousins Bo (Seann William
Scott) and Luke (Johnny Knoxville) Duke are back on the road and
up to no good, along with their cousin Daisy Duke (Jessica
Simpson), proud owner of the shortest shorts in the South. The
Duke family's business is moonshine, and the boys' Uncle Jesse
(Willie Nelson) concocts the tastiest brew in Dixie. More often
than not, the boys find themselves on the wrong side of the law
as they race to make their deliveries, leading the sheriff's
department on some truly wild goose chases in their infamous
orange Dodge Charger named the General Lee. But it's not all
moonshine and farm girls -- when Bo and Luke discover evidence
that their neighbors' properties are being unlawfully seized by
crooked commissioner Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds), their only chance
to protect their hometown is to put the pedal to the metal in a
scheme to save Hazzard County. Silly remake of a silly TV series.
Director: Jay Chandrasekhar. Stars: Johnny Knoxville, Seann
William Scott, Jessica Simpson, Wiilie Nelson, Burt Reynolds.
2005, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 106 min., Comedy, Box office gross:
$79.101 million, Warner, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental.

FANTASTIC FOUR
After exposure to a radioactive cosmic storm, four astronauts
become the most remarkable, albeit dysfunctional, super heroes of
all time: the Fantastic 4. Unfortunately, the mission's sponsor
has also been transformed -- into a lethal, iron-fisted super-
villain -- setting the stage for an explosive confrontation of
epic proportions. Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (Ioan Gruffud),
whose idealistic ambition manifests itself with uncharted
flexibility and stretching capabilities; Sue Storm/The Invisible
Woman (Jessica Alba), a strong female in a man's world who gains
the ability to disappear and project powerful force fields;
Johnny Storm/The Human Torch (Chris Evans), whose hot-headedness
gives him the power to encompass his own body in flames; and Ben
Grimm/The Thing (Michael Chiklis), whose strength of character
transforms him into a super-strong rock-man. Together, they must
come to terms with their newfound fame and save the world from
the evil machinations of the diabolical Dr. Doom (Julian
McMahon). Director: Tim Story. Stars: Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica
Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, Julian McMahon, Hamish
Linklater, Kerry Washington. 2005, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 106
min., Fantasy action, Box office gross: $56.061 million, Fox, No
VHS SRP, Priced for rental.

LADIES IN LAVENDER
Heartwarming film about two elderly sisters in a 1930's Cornish
seaside village who find their lives changed by a young man,
Andrea (Daniel Bruhl) who has been washed ashore and badly
injured. Upon taking him in, his presence quietly stirs Ursula's
(Judi Dench) abandoned feelings of longing and Janet's (Maggie
Smith) maternal instincts, while also arousing suspicion and fear
in the township in pre-World War II Europe, especially when
Andrea develops a friendship with Olga (Natasha McElhone), a
beautiful Russian woman on vacation. Eventually the two sisters
discover his true origins, his talents as a gifted violinist and
embark on a journey they had never imagined for themselves.
Director: Charles Dance. Stars: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Daniel
Bruhl, Natasha McElhone, Freddie Jones, Miriam Margoyles, David
Warner, Geoffrey Bayldon. 2005, CC, MPAA rating: PG, 105 min.,
Drama, Box office gross: $6.576 million, Sony, No VHS SRP, Priced
for rental.

DVD COLLECTIBLES:
Fox adds three titles to its Film Noir collection this week: "The
Dark Corner" (1946), directed by Henry Hathaway and starring
Lucille Ball, Clifton Webb, William Bendix, Mark Stevens, Kurt
Kreuger and Cathy Downs; "Kiss of Death" (1947), also directed by
Henry Hathaway, and starring Victor Mature, Brian Donlevy, Coleen
Gray, Richard Widmark, Taylor Holmes, Howard Smith and Karl
Malden; and "Where the Sidewalk Ends" (1950), directed by Otto
Preminger and starring Dana Andrews, Gene Tierney, Gary Merrill,
Bert Freed, Tom Tully, Karl Malden, Ruth Donnelly and Craig
Stevens ... Two fine titles this week from The Criterion
Collection: Francois Truffaut's "Shoot the Piano Player" (1960),
starring Charles Aznavour, Marie Dubois, Nicole Berger and
Michale Mercie; and Rene Clement's "Forbidden Games" (1952),
starring Georges Poujouly, Brigitte Fossey, Amedee and Laurence
Badie. Truffaut is drunk on the possibilities of cinema in his
most playful, anarchic film. Part thriller, part comedy, part
tragedy, "Shoot the Piano Player" relates the adventures of the
mild-mannered piano player Charlie (Charles Aznavour, in a
triumph of hangdog deadpan) as he stumbles into the criminal
underworld and a whirlwind love affair. Loaded with gags, guns,
clowns, and thugs, this razor-sharp homage to the American
gangster film is pure nouvelle vague. A timeless evocation of the
loss of innocence, Clement's devastating "Forbidden Games" tells
the story of a young orphan and her friend forced to fend for
themselves in World War II France. Featuring brilliant
performances from its child stars, the film won the 1952 Academy
Award for Best Foreign Film and remains a singular, breathtaking
cinematic achievement.

"Imagine John Lennon Deluxe Edition" is the story of one of
music's most enduring singer-songwriters, culled from a treasure
trove: the legendary musician's own collection of more than 240
hours of film and videotape, much of it never seen by the public.
With cooperation from Yoko Ono in its creation, producers David
L. Wolper and Andrew Solt transform the archival footage -- and a
monumental 36-tune soundtrack -- into a spellbinding account of a
complex, fascinating man. Lennon's own voice narrates this
classic biography. The $19.97 disc has 45 minutes of bonus
features, including a never-before-seen acoustic performance of
"Imagine," a tribute to Lennon, a trivia track, more; from
Warner.

On a lighter note, Sony will release this week "The Matt Helm

Martin, Ann Margret, Karl Malden; "The Ambushers" (1967),
starring Dean martin, Senta Berger, Janice Rule; and "The
Wrecking Crew" (1969), starring Dean Martin, Elke Sommer, Sharon
Tate ... The latest Walt Disney Treasures collections are due
this week: "Walt Disney Treasures: The Adventures of Spin and
