ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES
FOR TUESDAY, November 16 -- MONDAY, November 22

CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, THE
Vin Diesel reprises his "Pitch Black" role of enigmatic anti-hero
Richard B. Riddick in the new science fiction action-adventure
epic. Riddick has spent the last five years on the move among the
forgotten worlds on the outskirts of the galaxy, eluding
mercenaries bent on collecting the price on his head. Now, the
fugitive finds himself on planet Helion, home to a progressive
multicultural society, which has been invaded by the Lord Marshal
(Feore), a zealot who targets humans for subjugation with his
army of warriors known as Necromongers. Exiled to a subterranean
prison where extremes of temperature range from arctic nights to
volcanic days, Riddick encounters Kyra, the lone survivor from an
earlier chapter in his life. His efforts to free himself and Kyra
lead him to the Necromonger command ship, where he is pitted
against the Lord Marshal in an apocalyptic battle with possibly
the fate of all beings-both living and dead-hanging in the
balance. Director: David Twohy. Stars: Vin Diesel, Colm Feore,
Thandie Newton, Judi Dench. 2004, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 115
min., Science Fiction, Box office gross: $57.637 million,
Universal, $22.98 VHS SRP. DVD: Day & Date.

ELF
A human baby raised as an elf. A city where no one remembers the
true meaning of Christmas. Will Ferrell stars as Buddy, a human
raised in the North Pole to be an elf. After wreaking havoc in
the elf community due to his size, Buddy heads to New York City
to find his place in the world, and track down his father. But
life in the big city is not all sugarplums and candy canes. His
father is a "Scrooge" and his eight-year-old stepbrother doesn't
believe in Santa. Even the snowmen aren't friendly in New York.
In fact, they don't even speak. Worst of all, everyone has
forgotten the true meaning of Christmas, and it's up to Buddy and
his simple elf ways to win over his family, realize his destiny
and, ultimately, save Christmas for New York and the world.
Director: Jon Favreau. Stars: Will Ferrell, James Caan, Bob
Newhart, Edward Asner, Mary Steenburgen, Zooey Deschanel, Peter
Dinklage. 2003, CC, MPAA rating: PG, 95 min., Comedy, Box office

of their old friend Kangaroo Jack. When poachers kidnap and
threaten their marsupial mate, the heroic trio follows Jack and
his captors back to glittering Las Vegas, where they find
themselves embroiled in an Aboriginal jewel heist. The high-
stakes hijinks come to a climax at Outback Ollie's Animal Show,
when our heroes see that justice is served and they return Jack
and the jewels to Australia. 2004, CC, MPAA rating: NR, Animated,

LATE NIGHT SHOPPING
Quirky, offbeat English comedy in which four friends who work the
graveyard shift at dead-end jobs spend their evenings at the
local cafe. Vincent has an eye for the ladies, while Sean and
Lenny are both searching for love in all the wrong places, and
Jody is stuck on an assembly line. Stuck in a twilight world,
going nowhere fast, the four friends suddenly find they have more
in common than they might expect, and embark on a journey that
just might change their lives. Director: Saul Metzstein. Stars:
Luke de Woolfson, James Lance, Kate Ashfield, Enzo Cilenti. 2001,

SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD, THE
In 1933 Winnipeg, a contest sponsored by a local beer company has
attracted visitors from around the world. Competing for a $25,000
prize, the contestants are all trying to procure The Saddest
Music in the World. The host and judge of the competition is the
legless owner of the beer company, Lady Port-Huntly (Isabella
Rossellini), a former beauty who suffered a grotesque surgical
accident, and who hides her own sadness under a platinum-blond
wig. Meanwhile, her former lover, the American Chester Kent (Mark
McKinney), has arrived with his nymphomaniac girlfriend, Narcissa
(Maria de Medeiros), who suffers from amnesia. Chester's brother,
a pale and tortured man with a strange skin condition, and his
neurotic father, also enter the competition. They are joined by
musicians from Africa, Siam, Mexico, and Scotland, all of whom
offer phenomenal performances of nationalistic tunes. This is
really only the tip of the iceberg of this incredibly offbeat
film by director Guy Maddin. Director: Guy Maddin. Stars:
Isabella Rossllini, Mark McKinney. 2004, CC, MPAA rating: R, 99
min., Drama, Box office gross: $0.669 million, MGM, No VHS SRP,

WETHERBY
From acclaimed writer-director David Hare comes the compelling
story of Jean Travers (Vanessa Redgrave), a schoolteacher whose
life changes completely when a young man breaks into her home,
and then kills himself right in front of her for no apparent
reason. As Jean's friends (Judi Dench and Ian Holm) struggle to
help her, Jean is drawn deeper and deeper into a web of memories
and deceptions. A taut psychological drama that will keep you
guessing until the film's final moments. Director: David Hare.

Tom Wilkinson. 1985, CC, MPAA rating: R, 103 min., Drama, Home
Vision Entertainment. DVD: Only.

YU-GI-OH! THE MOVIE

The work of two great American artists merge in "Short Cuts,"
maverick director Robert Altman's kaleidoscopic adaptation of the

acclaimed 1993 film interweaves the stories of 22 characters as
they struggle to find solace and meaning in contemporary Los
Angeles. The extraordinary ensemble cast includes Tim Robbins,
Julianne Moore, Robert Downey, Jr., Jack Lemmon, and Jennifer
Jason Leigh-all giving fearless performances in what is one of
Altman's most compassionate creations. The film makes its DVD
premiere in a feature-filled two-disc set from The Criterion
