ONVIDEO'S WEEKLY GUIDE TO HOME VIDEO RELEASES
FOR TUESDAY, July 13 -- MONDAY, July 19

BIG BOUNCE, THE
Comedy caper based on the novel by legendary crime writer Elmore
Leonard. Owen Wilson plays Jack Ryan, a likeable drifter whose
talents lie just outside the law. Hoping a change of scenery will
bring him luck, Jack heads for Hawaii. There on the exotic North
Shore of Oahu, he soon discovers that whether he is looking for a
new con or a little romance, temptation is everywhere. Jack takes
a job working construction for Ray Ritchie (Gary Sinise), a shady
real estate developer who is building a resort despite protests
by local Hawaiians. Almost immediately, Jack has a run-in with
Ray Ritchie's foreman, Lou Harris (Vinnie Jones), and cold-cocks
him across the jaw with a Louisville Slugger. Bob Jr. (Charlie
Sheen), Ritchie's right-hand man, warns Jack to get off the
island if he knows what's good for him. Jack happily ignores Bob
Jr. Impressed with Jack's knockout ability, North Shore District
Judge Walter Crewes (Morgan Freeman) offers Jack a job while
taking an unusually keen interest in Jack's past crimes and
uncertain future. Enter Nancy Hayes (Sara Foster), a thrill-
loving local who specializes in good looks and petty crime. When
Nancy tries to seduce Jack into helping her double-cross Ray
Ritchie and steal $200,000 of his payoff money, Jack is
intrigued, but hesitant. This could be the perfect score, or the
perfect setup. Director: George Armitage. Stars: Owen Wilson,
Morgan Freeman, Sara Foster, Charlie Sheen, Gary Sinise. 2004,
CC, MPAA rating: PG-13, 89 min., Comedy, Box office gross: $6.471
million, Warner, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date.

CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE DRAMA QUEEN
Comedy with attitude tells the story of a teenager plucked from
the city she loves and plunked down in the wilds of suburban New
Jersey. Clothes. Music. Friends. Each is a minefield in every
teenager's daily battle -- one wrong step and kaboom. Is it any
wonder that the smallest decisions are played out with the
highest drama? Such is life for Lola Cep (Lindsay Lohan). Lola
feels her life is simply not worth living when she moves with her
family from every single thing on the planet that she loves
(read: the Big Apple) and is plopped down in the middle of the
cultural wasteland that is suburban New Jersey. As she juggles
making new friends at a new school while standing up to a new
rival, Lola finds it hard enough just to live her life, let alone
remember how important it is to live her dream. So much drama. So
little time! Director: Sara Sugarman. Stars: Lindsay Lohan, Adam
Garcia, Glenne Headley, Alison Pill, Eli Marienthal, Carol Kane.
2004, CC, MPAA rating: PG, 90 min., Comedy, Box office gross:
$28.695 million, Buena Vista, $24.99 VHS SRP. DVD: Day & Date.

HUMAN STAIN, THE
Based on Pulitzer Prize-winning author Philip Roth's best-selling
novel. This moody romantic thriller is the story of Coleman Silk,
who throughout his life has been a master of deception and self-
reinvention. As a promising college student (Wentworth Miller),
Coleman's first love, Steena (Jacinda Barrett), is shattered by a
secret. Years later, as an esteemed professor (Anthony Hopkins),
his career is ruined by false accusations of racism, the shock of
which gives his wife a fatal heart attack. Now, as he embarks on
a scandalous affair with the mysterious Faunia (Nicole Kidman),
Coleman experiences an erotic reawakening that carries him back
to the past. But with his resurrected passion also comes the
threat of danger from Faunia's ex-husband (Ed Harris), and
Coleman is faced with the imperative to expose his true identity
before it's too late. A hot performance by Kidman and as-always
journeyman performances by Hopkins and Harris keep the film
afloat. Director: Robert Benton. Stars: Anthony Hopkins, Nicole
Kidman, Ed Harris, Gary Sinise, Wentworth Miller. 2003, CC, MPAA
rating: R, 106 min., Drama, Box office gross: $5.381 million,
Miramax, No VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date.

OUT OF REACH
The movie follows Billy-Ray Lancing (Steven Seagal), a government
agent-turned-survivalist from Northern Alaska who works on a
wildlife refuge and sponsors a young girl named Irina in the
international foster program run by Faisal (Matt Schulze).
Lancing uncovers that the foster program is really a human
trafficking operation, disguised as Irina's orphanage and
financed by honest and unknowing well-intentioned Samaritans.
Lancing heads overseas to find the girl and shut down the
operation. Director: Po-Chih Leong. Stars: Steven Seagal, Matt
Schulze, Nick Brimble, Robbie Gee, Ida Nowakowska. 2004, CC, MPAA
rating: R, Action thriller, Columbia TriStar, No VHS SRP, Priced
for rental. DVD: Day & Date.

OUTFOXED: RUPERT MURDOCH'S WAR ON JOURNALISM
"Outfoxed" examines how media empires, led by Rupert Murdoch's
Fox News, have been running a "race to the bottom" in television
news. This film provides an in-depth look at Fox News and the
dangers of ever-enlarging corporations taking control of the
public's right to know. The film explores Murdoch's burgeoning
kingdom and the impact on society when a broad swath of media is
controlled by one person. Media experts, including Walter
Cronkite, Jeff Cohen (FAIR) Bob McChesney (Free Press), Chellie
Pingree (Common Cause), Jeff Chester (Center for Digital
Democracy) and David Brock (Media Matters) provide context and
guidance for the story of Fox News and its effect on society.
This documentary also reveals the secrets of Former Fox news
producers, reporters, bookers and writers who expose what it's
like to work for Fox News. These former Fox employees talk about
how they were forced to push a "right-wing" point of view or risk
their jobs. Some have even chosen to remain anonymous in order to
protect their current livelihoods. As one employee said "There's
no sense of integrity as far as having a line that can't be
crossed." Director-producer Robert Greenwald has produced and/or
directed 53 television movies, miniseries and features. 2004, CC,
MPAA rating: NR, 77 min., Documentary, Robert Greenwald Prods.,
$9.95 VHS or DVD plus $3.50 shipping from www.outfoxed.org. DVD:
Day & Date.

SEASIDE (BORD DE MER)
Winner of the Cannes Camera d'Or (Best First Feature) and
starring Bulle Ogier, "Seaside" explores a year in the lives of
the inhabitants of Cayeux, a small beach town in France. As the
seasons change and tourists come and go, the town's residents
stay -- falling in and out of love, working at unfulfilling jobs,
gambling away savings, and dreaming of escape. Inspired by the
visual poetry of Edward Hopper, first-time director Julie Lopes-
Curval has created a small masterpiece -- a delicate,
unsentimental ensemble film that evokes comparison to Eric
Rohmer's work. Lopes-Curval uses her camera like a paintbrush to
reveal the predictable parameters and rhythms of small-time life.
In French with English subtitles. Director: Julie Lopes-Curval.
Stars: Bulle Ogier, Helene Fillieres, Ludmila Mikael, Jonathan
Zaccao. 2003, CC, MPAA rating: NR, 90 min., Drama, Box office
gross: $0.013 million, First Run Features. DVD: Only.

STARSKY & HUTCH
The cult TV series makes it to the big screen. Detective David
Starsky (Ben Stiller) is the most dedicated undercover cop
working the mean streets of Bay City, California. Maniacally
devoted to his job, when he's on duty no crime goes unpunished --
and he's always on duty. Detective Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson (Owen
Wilson) is having career issues of his own -- he's a good cop,
but his hazardously laid back personality and desire for a quick
buck don't always get the job done. As soon as the two mismatched
crime fighters unhappily begin their first day on the beat as a
team, a "floater" turns up on the Bay City coastline. With the
help of Hutch's dynamite, street-savvy informant Huggy Bear
(Snoop Dogg), the two begin to unravel the mysterious murder
case. All signs seem to point at wealthy businessman Reese
Feldman (Vince Vaughn), but Starsky and Hutch just can't seem to
make a case against him. The unlikely duo will use their canniest
undercover skills, hardcore street smarts and striking good looks
to solve the crime and make sure the criminal does the time.
Director: Todd Phillips. Stars: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Vince
Vaughn, Snoop Dogg, Juliette Lewis. 2004, CC, MPAA rating: PG-13,
100 min., Action, Box office gross: $87.127 million, Warner, No
VHS SRP, Priced for rental. DVD: Day & Date.

DVD COLLECTIBLES:
The folks at The Criterion Collection will release two fine
foreign films this week: Early Summer (1951), directed by
Yasujiro Ozu and starring Setsuko Hara, Chishu Ryu, Chikage
Awashima and Kuniko Miyake; and Port of Shadows (Le Quai des
Brumes) (1938), directed by Marcel Carne and starring Jean Gabin,
Michel Simon, Michele Morgan and Pierre Brasseur. "Early Summer"
is a reprise of Ozu's favorite theme, telling the story of the
Memiya family and their efforts to marry off their headstrong
daughter, Noriko. A seemingly simple story, it is among the
director's most emotionally complex -- a nuanced examination of a
family falling apart. "Port of Shadows" follows the travels of
Jean (Jean Gabin) -- an army deserter looking for another chance
to make good on life -- to the port city of Le Havre. From the
moment he arrives, Jean is caught up in a series of acts of
kindness and revenge that churn him into front page news. Marcel
Carne's film is one of the classics of the golden age of French
cinema, starkly portraying an underworld of lonely souls
wrestling with their own destinies. Both discs are loaded with
extras.

Another fine foreign film is being released by First Run
Features: Seaside (Bord de Mer) (2003). Winner of the Cannes
Camera d'Or (Best First Feature) and starring Bulle Ogier,
"Seaside" explores a year in the lives of the inhabitants of
Cayeux, a small beach town in France. As the seasons change and
tourists come and go, the town's residents stay -- falling in and
out of love, working at unfulfilling jobs, gambling away savings,
and dreaming of escape.

"A Tickle in the Heart" (1997) captures the past and present of
the remarkable Epstein brothers -- Max, Julie and Willie --
Klezmer music legends on a joyous international comeback tour. It
is a cinematic party with three of the funniest and liveliest men
in music. The Epsteins are natural performers, and their sense of
life, music and family is as life affirming and intoxicating as
the joyous music they play. The documentary follows the "retired"
Kings of Klezmer as they tour from Poland to Brooklyn to Florida,
bringing a new life to their music; extras include a brief
history of Klezmer, photo gallery, more. From First Run Features.

The controversial documentary "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on
Journalism," is an examination of how media empires, led by
Rupert Murdoch's Fox News, have been running a "race to the
bottom" in television news. The film (available on DVD and VHS
via the Internet) provides an in-depth look at Fox News and the
dangers of ever-enlarging corporations taking control of the
public's right to know. The film explores Murdoch's burgeoning
kingdom and the impact on society when a broad swath of media is
controlled by one person. Director-producer Robert Greenwald has
produced and/or directed 53 television movies, miniseries and
features. The 77 minute program -- $9.95 VHS or DVD, plus $3.50
shipping -- can be ordered from www.outfoxed.org.

For more escapist fare, Fox will release Predator: Collector's
Edition (1987), directed by John McTiernan and starring Arnold
Schwarzenegger, Jesse Ventura, Carl Weathers, Elpidia Carrillo,
Bill Duke and R.G. Armstrong. The two-disc set includes
commentary by McTiernan, seven featurettes, outtakes, Easter
eggs, deleted scene, a documentary, more. The DVD comes just in
time for the August 13 theatrical release of "Alien vs.
Predator," and includes a "Movie Cash" coupon good for one free
admission to see "AVP."

FROM TV TO VIDEO:
Due this week are "All in the Family: The Complete Third Season",
a three-disc set with 24 episodes, $29.95, from Columbia TriStar
... "Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Volume Two," a two-disc set with 13

series, $29.98 from Warner ... "K Street," 10 episodes of the HBO
series that mingled fictional political consultants (Mary
McCormack, John Slattery) with real Washington figures (James

unsettling odyssey when he shares a compartment with a beautiful
young American (Wendy Raebeck) and an imperious Viennese Dowager
(Dame Peggy Ashcroft); from Acorn Media on DVD ... and "Foyle's
War, Set 2," a four-volume set containing the second series of
the PBS Masterpiece Theatre show about a veteran police detective
who is persuaded to remain at his job rather than enlist when
World War II begins; also from Acorn media on VHS ($79.99) and
DVD ($59.99).

FOR THE KIDS:
MGM has a slate of four kids titles due this week: "Miss Spider's
Sunny Patch Kids," a CGI-animated 49-minute adventure based on
the best-selling children's book series about Miss Spider, her
husband Holley and their eight-legged bundles of joy, with the
voices of Brooke Shields and Rick Moranis; on VHS ($9.94) and DVD
($14.95) for kids aged 2 to 5 ... "Stellaluna," a 41-minute
animated adventure -- based on the award-winning book by Janell
Cannon -- about a fruit bat unexpectedly raised by a family of
birds, on VHS ($9.94) and DVD ($14.95) for kids aged 2 to 5 ...
and the "Thunderbirds International Rescue Edition," a two-disc
set with feature length movies "Thunderbirds Are Go" and
"Thunderbird 6," released to coincide with the theatrical release

of the TV show; $14.95 each or $29.98 the set, DVD only.
