present PICTURE THIS: The CSU Independent Film School 2003, free
apprenticeship-style film and Digital Video Production training.
WHO: Cleveland State University's Department of Communication,
Independent Pictures, plus local and national professionals and YOU.
You must be 16 years of age or older and have the desire to learn
16mm film production or Digital video production.
WHAT: The CSU President's Initiative Award has provided funding for
the start-up of this unique opportunity to learn from professionals
and educators to create a short film from script to screen. Film
production selected applicants (15 participants) will receive 3 weeks
training that culminates in shooting a fully crewed 16mm film. The
Digital video production selected applicants (10 participants) will
digitally document the whole process and will edit the film
and "author" (create) the film's DVD. PICTURE THIS made possible by
funds from the President's Initiative-a partnership of the Cleveland
Foundation, the George Gund Foundation and Cleveland State University.
WHERE: Cleveland State University's Department of Communication state-
of-the-art DVCOMM center located in the Music and Communication
Building, 2001 Euclid Ave., Downtown Cleveland. (More information

WHEN: All applications are due by June 11th. Selected interviews
will be conducted during the week of June 16th. Winners will be
announced during the week of June 23rd. Training starts July 8th and
classes will be conducted between the hours of 10 am – 8pm. Daily
classes will be approximately 3 hours in length. The actual film
shoot will be conducted the week of July 21st and will require
selected applicants to work the complete 12-hour shooting days. Three
shooting days are projected with one backup day. The Digital Video
production track will continue to work on the film in the
postproduction phase during the month of August. DVD production will
occur after the completion of the film, which is slated for release
in the spring of 2004. Digital video students will be scheduled
loosely throughout the year as the process dictates.
HOW: To be considered you must meet the application deadline and show
a strong dedication to the program. You must be able to attend most
classes and are required to work the 12-hour days during the film-
shooting schedule. You complete our application form, which can be
