True to form for Independent Pictures¡¦ mission to aid struggling
filmmakers hone their craft, this year¡¦s Ohio Independent Film
Festival includes a documentary workshop in addition to a week-long
program of innovative shorts and feature-length films.
The Sugar Pictures Documentary Workshop not only provides insights on
technique but also clues participants into hard-won lessons on
researching, producing, fund-raising, and the marketing of non-
fiction films from professional filmmakers.
Instructor Thom Powers, owner of New York-based Sugar Pictures which
has produced projects for HBO, CINEMAX, and PBS, helps those
interested in pursuing a career in documentary film or simply more
professional video projects by focusing on the fundamentals from
preproduction to distribution.
Thom Powers will take his real world experience on approaching
foundations and broadcasters for support, how to write a good
proposal, how to conduct an interview, budgeting tips, and more.
This course, a compacted version of a 12-week course Thom Powers
teaches at New York University¡¦s School of Professional Studies
opens the festival¡¦s week of programming on Saturday, November 2,

Independent Pictures supports emerging media artists and the
exhibition of their films and video projects to a wider audience
through the Ohio Independent Film Festival and other programs such as
the Ohio Independent Screenplay Awards, Script Mill, film training
programs, and workshops.
