REVIEW OF CHALK - from defunct nicolawalker.net site
Imagine clawing your way out of a dire nightmare in which you have to
stand in front of a class of unruly students in an inner city
comprehensive school - as you awake, you manage to scream "I'm a
teacher!"
Well, that's what happens to Nicola. She has to work at a school
where dope-smoking sixth formers, paranoid deputy headmasters, and a
maths teacher who can only communicate by swearing:
Q: "what do you teach?"
A: "Bastards!"
are all part of a normal day. Over the course of the two series of
Chalk, there's a dead teacher to be hidden away, the RE teacher
acquires a reputation for being both the Devil, and possibly also a
virgin, (go figure it out!), Nicola admits to having sexual fantasies
in her dreams over the tannoy, the Deputy headmaster urinates out of
a window, (possibly on, certainly in sight of) some television news
reporters, and a visit by his mother finally drives the deputy head
into a breakdown.
It's fast, it's funny, and if you went to a comprehensive school in
England ... it's worryingly accurate!
