REVIEW OF LAST TRAIN - from defunct nicolawalker.net site
Take a headstrong young scientist, an abused wife on the run from her
husband with her children in tow, a policeman, a criminal, and the
rest of the people in a train carriage when the end of civilization
comes to pass, and what do you have?
The Last Train is a gloomy, and sometimes sinister look at the few
remaining members of humanity, after a meteorite strikes the Earth in
the same way that a meteorite strike is supposed to have killed the
dinosaurs. As the train enters a tunnel, a flask carried by Nicola is
dropped, and bursts open. Our small band of survivors are promptly
frozen, as the rest of the world tries to cope with Armageddon.
Having thawed out, (Nicola tried to explain to the group that the
flask she was carrying and which froze them was not gas, but a
particulate suspension - whatever that means!), the group try to
assess their situation. Their estimates for their enforced
hibernation rapidly escalate from "days or perhaps weeks",
through "weeks or at worst months", until they start taking note of
the dates on graves, and come to estimate that they were frozen for
some 15 years!
They are an unlikely group, but their chances of survival seem to be
enhanced by sticking together - safety in numbers! Nicola has no
doubts what they must do. There was a survival project in place
called the "Arc". She is determined that their only hope of survival
is to make they way to the Arc, and contact the other scientists who,
she repeatedly assures everyone, are there. The series is a grim
look at the world. There is a tragic death in the small band of
survivors, and in a poorly organised "smash and grab" raid on a tribe
who have survived somewhere in the north, Nicola is compelled to kill
in order to save the life of one of her colleagues. The brutality
reaches a peak when the opposing tribe quite literally crucify two of
Nicola's associates.
I won't give away the ending. Although I considered it to be a weak
and feeble attempt at wrapping the story up. The series was worth
watching, if only to remind members of the thirtysomething generation
of the fact that we grew up believing that we would see the end of
the world when the USA and USSR launched the nuclear missiles.
