i get alllll my best ideas in the shower, where, unfortunately, it's kind of impossible to jot things down haha. but i'd be very prolific if i wrote down everything that came to me in there.
Usually my best writing comes from the car...just because I get bored and I'm focused...I generally try to write when the inspiration hits me other wise...it turns into complete and utter crap, some times inspiration comes while I'm at church...other times from a song. And I do have ideas, dialogue, etc scrawled all over my notes...not necessarily a good thing but it helps me stay awake haha
Where do you do your best writing? Or when? Do you have an awesome desk setup that inspires
you? Do your greatest ideas come at 2am - not a moment before? Or do you have dialogue and notes scrawled in the margins of your math homework?

Unfortunately, all my best ideas seem to come in the middle of the night. I can't stay up that late anymore because of my awesome job, so I don't get a lot of writing done. I'm hoping that will change though. I have ideas for challenges two and three, but I'm currently stuck. I'll just have to wait and see what happens!

note about posting
If you post a fic on FFN in response to a challenge, please do one of two things (or both!). Please post to the group so others can read the challenge, and/or mention the challenge number/NewsieChallenge in the summary of your story. That way, we can put it in the NewsieChallenge C2 that Muchacha created. Thanks!
note about challenges I know school (and, hell, life) is hectic. If you saw a challenge that you wanted to respond to but never got the chance - no big deal. You can respond to any challenge at any time, not just during the week when it was posted.
Happy weekend, everyone! I hope everyone is out of school, or almost out of school! Summer is a glorious thing. (Apologies to B and others who have "real" jobs and "real" lives.)
It's 4:59pm, which means that Falco Conlon is currently in the process of graduating! Maybe she already received her diploma - maybe she has already graduated! WOW!
This week is a... wait for it... picture challenge! Oh goodness, I'm excited.
Maybe you will write the scene that the picture captures. Maybe this frame is how your story will end, or begin. Or you will just use certain elements... or maybe you are just inspired and the story you create will have no obvious connection to the image. Anything goes.
A mi tambien (me too). I like getting emails :)
For me, anyway, I don't have much time to write at
this point, and I'm guessing that's true for many with
school just wrapping up recently. So, maybe more life
this summer?

About the mailing list thing:
Personally, I would prefer to either keep it on Yahoo!groups or to move it to LJ
as a
commuity, rather than a messageboard - but that's mildly selfish. *g* I read the
emails
from here when I check my email every day, and I see things on LJ when I check
my friends
list every day, and that's easier than remembering to check a message board too,
I think.
But I'd still join and follow along if it was on a message board. Just not my
preference.

Ok, this week's challenge is one from the archives. I'm repeating it because I like it. :)
The story must start with a phone being hung up, and end with a phone being picked up.
Also, does anyone have any thoughts on the 'keep the group as a mailing list' vs 'switch the group to a message board' thing? The group has been pretty quiet.
Oh, good point. Thanks for reminding me about that!
And your fic is now up there, too.

Oh I think that's a great idea! I know if you go to the one voice

Since I didn't see that anyone else had made one,
I went ahead and created a C2 for us (with the wittingly original name
"Newsies Challenge")
The fictions I have included right now are: Since When Does Crutchy Get Laid? by Brunette Chain Reaction by Oxymoronic Alliteration Broken Hallelujiah by Brunette Dropping (S)knickers by Harmony Remarc
I'm fairly sure there's at least one more floating around out
there. If you'd like me to add your fic to the C2, let me

And if anyone is interested in staffing, contact me.
Hello, everyone! (And please forgive the cross posting!)
Since summer has finally begun, judging by the fact that my A/C is
finally turned on, it's time for the Refuge to get going and do a fic
exchange already. (Being Refuge-sponsored, this is for the slashers.)
The way it works is you get to pick a pairing and post three prompts,
all summer-related. Some lovely person at the Refuge will write a fic
just for you, based on your choices. In exchange, you get emailed the
characters and prompts someone else posted, and write a fic for her.
You'll have three weeks to do the actual writing bit.
Sound good? Read through the rules and post your prompts on this
thread in the Refuge forum:
http://refuge.queenitsy.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=774 .
Awesome.

The theme of this week's challenge is... 'unexpected.'
Pick a season. Now throw some unseasonable weather in there.
Then, think about the following phrases. Choose one (or more, if you're really ambitious) to focus on in your story.
-Unexpected consequences -Unexpected turn of events -Unexpected wealth -Unexpected results -Unexpected surprise (I've always found that to be redundant, eh?) -Expect the unexpected -Or, just "unexpected"
Wow I have typed that word too many times, because now it makes no sense at all when I look at it. Don't you hate when that happens?
Hey. I've generally got spare time when I'm not working. I did the
newsies for several projects while in high school and when it comes to
history and such, I'm a whiz and quick. Generally can get things done
within 2-3 days. If your up for it let me know.

Hey, I've a bit of time. I can do technicalities and
general flow. I'm not much of a history expert, but I
can point out glaringly incorrect mistakes. I'd be
willing to beta, and could have it back to you within
a week (or a day, depending on when you send it).

I'm hoooome! Which means it's time to address a few things. Remember that this is a community, so feel free to respond, debate, etc etc whatever I say. Nothing is too controversial.
Anyway.
Muchacha recently asked me about the possibility of a NewsieChallenge C2 on FFN. I think this is an excellent idea - I always forget that C2s exist! If everyone on FFN is okay with having their stories gathered this way, the next question is who would like to admin the C2. I already have a C2, so I can't do it.
If you are interested in starting the C2, please email the group before creating it so we don't have more than one floating around. Also, check with yourself to make sure that you will have the time to hunt down fics to add every week. Of course, hiring staff can also help that job quite a bit. :)
Okay, the "the group" part. I was thinking about this group last night and wondering if it wouldn't work better in another medium. I think that YahooGroups are pretty handy, but things can also get a little out of hand if you are a member of three or four active email lists. You know what I mean - either you devote a chunk of your day to actually reading everything, or your delete button gets pretty well worn in.
The main issues, at least in my mind, are that the challenges and the challenge responses should be easy to find. At the same time, discussion is encouraged. I think that a message board is the perfect solution to this. With a message board, there could be threads for challenges and their responses, and these threads could always be on 'top,' so to speak. There could also be threads for regular stuff and discussion, so people could get to know each other without any flooding of inboxes.
So, what do you think? Would you support a move to a message board, or do you think everything is just fine as it is, as a mailing list? Let me know.
Okay, one last note. FanLib. FanLib is a new fanfiction archive site that is raising some legit concerns around the entire fandom universe. I'm not really going to go into detail here - suffice to say, it's a place that should be avoided, at least stage in development (or, you know, forever). The reason I'm not going into detail is that someone else has done so far better than I ever could.
Hey kids. I'm posting this a day late because... I was out of town. In fact, I'm still out of town. Woooo? Just to change things up, this week's challenge has more details/requirements, etc. We'll see how it goes, right?

CHARACTERS: choose at least 2 of the following -Kid Blink -Morris -Dutchy -Racetrack -Boots -Les -Snoddy -Skittery
OBJECTS: incorporate at least 3 of the following -a holey
sweater -a missing tooth -soap -a paintbrush -a trolley -a loose cobblestone -potatoes -a snowball -bad coffee -a trapdoor -wet matches -an expensive cigar
QUOTES: use at least 2 of the following (can be dialogue or narration) -"So I've heard." -"We've got tonight." -"The sky was on fire." -"Ask me again, I dare you." -"At the time, I didn't think it was my fault." -"There are stranger things."

Hello everyone. My writing plate is incredibly full, so I thought I
wouldn't have any time for any writing side dishes, however (to carry
this metaphor beyond the limits of usefullness) I found that the first
challenge was a nice little writing appetizer. So, may I present:
Challenge #1:
Title: Passenger Seat
Genre: General
Rating: K
Summary: David is not a leader. He tries to understand this. He's not
a people person. He thinks that perhaps that it is. That is why he is
not a leader. And it is exactly why Jack Kelly is. AU
FFN: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3544080/1/
One Voice: http://onevoice.queenitsy.com/archive/viewstory.php?sid=30
I would greatly appreciate some r&r lovin'
Much love,
Falco
Well, since I've been stumped on writing for the first challenge, I thought I would write one for number two. Hopefully this will help break my writer's block...
Title: Mondays Genre: General/Humor Rating: Fiction Rated: K Summary: [Newsies Challenge #2] Everything would have been fine if he just hadn't understood how the mind of a boy works. He wouldn't have felt so guilty – and, of course, he wouldn't have had that smelly boy lurking at his feet…
Hey, I finished my fic and posted on both FF.Net and One Voice.
Title: Chain Reaction
Summary: Sometimes one decision can affect your entire day.
FF.Net link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3538019/1/
One Voice link: http://onevoice.queenitsy.com/archive/viewstory.php?

I haven't had a chance to read the other two fics that have gone up
for this challenge so far, but I will soon :)

Me, too, y'all. Nothing like breaking writer's block
when you have three big tests to be studying for!
Title: Dropping (S)knickers
Rating: K+ for mild language
Summery: Everything would have been fine if he just
hadn't pulled down his knickers. But no, good old
Snipes had to bend down and flash his shiny hiney to
our pursuers.
Genre: General/humorous
Characters: Racetrack, Mush, Snipeshooter
On FF: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3537778/1/
On OneVoice:
http://onevoice.queenitsy.com/archive/viewstory.php?sid=27
Word Count: My word processer claims "1000". FF.net
claims (with intro and closing) "1049". OneVoice
claims "949". So meh.

Favorite genre to read? To write? I love reading humour fics, but I
also love really dramatic and somewhat historical fics. I think I'm

Okay guys, wicked sorry about the spam. I deleted it and those members and now the group is back to closed membership (I have to approve anyone who wants to join) so it should be all set!
Also, sorry this is a few days late, but I have barely been home. Anyyyway, onto this week's prompt.
Alright, for this challenge, you have to write exactly (exactly!) 1,000 words.
The first sentence is "Everything would have been fine, if he just hadn't..." (complete the sentence)
The last sentence is "Mondays were always rotten anyhow."
Those sentences can be dialogue or they can be narration, it's up to you. The story can be in 1st person, 3rd person, whatever. Free reign... but exactly 1,000 words, with that opening and closing. Have at!
CHALLENGE REMINDERS -Don't be shy, post your own prompts or ideas

It's okay by me! I understand completely about bad moods. I get into a bad mood almost as much as Skittery does! I hope that your day goes better and that you cheer up soon! ~Bookworm

As I've been informed.
Guys, I'm sorry for sending that out. I was in a bad mood when I checked my email, and that just sent me over the edge without thinking. Many apologies for my childishness.
