Hello all. Welcome to NewsieChallenge! I'm Keza (aka Queen Kez the Wicked) and I will be your guide today.
NewsieChallenge was created in the summer of 2004, when I had just finished a long story and didn't know what to do with myself. With over 60 members, the group took off and was a lot of fun for a few months. Unfortunately, I became very busy and wasn't smart enough to pass the torch to someone else, so the group kind of faded away. Time to bring it back, I say!
The purpose of NewsieChallenge is to get everyone writing. The basic idea is this: there are "official" weekly challenges, which I send out. These come in many forms. You have as much time as you want to write something (or nothing, if you're not inspired) in response to the prompt. Members are encouraged to post "unofficial" challenges whenever they want.
Challenge responses can be posted anywhere (like FFN) but we also have our own fic archive where I would REALLY like people to post their challenge responses. We'll get into that later.
So, that's the idea. Intrigued? Good! Spread the word. Now, here are the specifics...
Let's do this in the form of question/answer, shall we?
Q. WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T DO A CHALLENGE? A. Nothing. You may find yourself doing every challenge, or you may just do one or two whenever you have the time. No one is going to punish you. It's completely your decision.
Q. WHAT DO CHALLENGES LOOK LIKE? A. They come in many forms. A challenge may be "write about betrayal." Or, it could be "write exactly 1,000 words that is entirely the dialogue of an argument." Or, "Write a fic that begins with someone hanging up a phone, and ends with someone picking up a phone." Or, "Pick 3 of the 6 mentioned characters, 2 of the 5 listed quotes, 6 of these 20 objects, and write a humorous story involving..." etc. The possibilities are endless, my friend.
Q. HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WRITE THE CHALLENGE? A. As long as you want. Maybe a challenge inspires a 100,000 word story in you. Well, that's gonna take awhile, but good for you! Maybe you want to try and do every single challenge, which means that you have about a week.
Q. WHAT DO I DO WITH MY FINISHED, CHALLENGE-INSPIRED FIC? A. Post it. Studentnumber24601/B was kind enough to create a Challenge category on the fic archive "One Voice United" (
http://onevoice.queenitsy.com/archive). PLEASE go over there, create an account, and post your challenge responses on that site. Why? Because then we have them all in one place! You are welcome to additionally post your fics on FFN, of course. But please post them both places (or at least One Voice United). That way, they are easy to find, and anyone can read all the challenges at once, etc.
Q. HOW DOES THIS EMAIL THING WORK? A. The group is set at "reply-to-group," which means that when you hit reply, the whole group will see what you post. Please remember this and remember to reply-to-sender with personal comments. Other than that, group discussion is encouraged!
Advertising. Advertising is allowed for the following: -Casting Calls -Requests for beta readers -Announcements for fic contests and challenges -Plugging for sites, LJ communities, archives, MySpace groups, msg boards, etc, that pertain to Newsies FANFICTION
Advertising is NOT allowed for: -Fanfiction Updates
The exception is if you post a link to your challenge response. For example, I could not send a plug to the group for my story "Epic," but I could send a plug to the group about the fic I just wrote in response to a challenge. 'Cause it's group related.
Q. ANYTHING ELSE? A. I don't think so, but I know more stuff will come up. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! Either send them to the group, or contact me.
Remember to spread the word! The more people involved, the more fun it is! :)
Hi. I'm doing some research on fandom. Fandom, though not an official word, is described as a form of entertainment with devoted fans and its community of fans and creators. If you're a huge fan of Lord of the Rings, for instance, Lord of the Rings would be your fandom. The survey is also attached as a word document. I will admit, it works better on paper than on the net, but any response will be greatly appreciated. Also, please forward this on to any and all of your friends, if you so desire!
I'd greatly appreciate it if you could take some time and fill out this survey as accurately and fully as you can. You don't have to be a huge fan of something! Any and all responses are appreciated. If there is a question you feel uncomfortable answering, you may leave it blank or draw a line through it. It may take a while to fill out, but this will really help me! I'd like all replies to be received by January 31, 2006, but if they're later than that, it's okay. Please send all completed surveys to:
Questions, comments, complaints, may be sent to fandomsurvey@....
Instructions: Please fill out any answers as fully as you can. Except for number 8, when your fandom is referred to, please consider the fandom you feel most strongly about. If you cannot decide, please consider fandom in general.

You're a huge fan of Lord of the Rings, and rather proud of your encyclopedic knowledge of all things Middle Earth. You and a new group of friends are hanging out when you see an ad for the new Lord of the Rings Trivial Pursuit. You are about to point it out excitedly and make a comment, but one of your friends says, "Look at that. What kind of a loser would buy something like that." How do you react?
You've never met your friend's boyfriend, but she's told him about you. "I told him you were a huge fan of Britney Spears, and he basically said that he's lost all respect for you." Your friend continues to explain about how she tried to convince him otherwise, but the damage has been done. How do you feel about being judged before this person has even seen you?
If you have more than one fandom, how do your fandoms differ? How are they alike?
Do you have any other comments about fandom in general or your fandom specifically?

How do you feel when you meet someone who feels very passionately about something that you are not interested in?
Have you ever decided not to approach someone because they show fanatic qualities? Why or why not?
You are out at a restaurant with your family, and a group of young teenage girls come in chatting excitedly and loudly and occasionally breaking into loud, raucous song. They are wearing t-shirts and make up with glitter, with the name of a popular music group written everywhere. What else can you assume about this group of girls? Are they fanatics? Why or why not?
A large man with a football jersey on passes you on your way into the grocery store. He's carrying a twelve pack of beer, and is heading to an SUV. Would you consider him a fanatic? Why or why not?
You see a young man with a cloak on and a fake sword at his waist dawdling near the entrance of a movie theater. Upon closer look at the crowd, you see several others in different costumes. What is your first thought?
Have you ever been a fan of something? If so, What? When? What do you remember most about it?
Are you a fan, but don't consider yourself a "fanatic?'
Do you have any other comments about fans or fandom?

Hey everyone - forgive the generic, cross posted message, please :)
It's the holiday season, and over at the Refuge (the Newsies slash
archive) we do a yearly slash story exchage. If slash is your thing,
it works like this: you go to our forums (link below) and tell us what
pairing you want, and three prompts. You also list three characters
you feel you write well. Someone secret writes your fic for you, and
you write a fic based on the prompts from someone else. Everyone gets
one, everyone gives one. Most fics are about 500 words, so it's not
too stressful to write.
Sign ups begin now, at this thread:
http://refuge.queenitsy.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=227 (You have
to register for the forums to sign up, though). Sign ups remain open
until December 10, and we'll get your assignment to you as quickly as
possible. You hae from the tenth to the twenty-fifth to write your
fic, and we'll post everyone's fics up on January first.
So if you like slash, head on over for a holiday treat!

Forgive the crossposting, please, this is just a quick note to let
y'all know that the Blink Week entries are all up. You can find that
at http://queenitsy.com/newsies/blink/entries.html . And if you wrote
something for the contest and don't see it listed there, email me
ASAP, please. :)
Judging has begun, but will probably take several weeks, as I'm going
to be in and out of town for awhile.

Well, it's past midnight here, and that means it's July 15. In other
words, I am 22 years old, and Blink Week has officially begun. Contest
entries can be posted and sent in until July 22, and if you need a
reminder on the info, it's at http://queenitsy.com/newsies/blink/ .
Good luck with the contest and happy birthday to meeeee~~

Hey, everyone,
Well, as I promised, I got my Blink Week website together with all the
information for this year's contest. You can find it at
http://queenitsy.com/newsies/blink/ .
The basic info:
The contest runs from July 15-July 22, though I might be willing to
expand that if people really need more time. Entries *must* be posted
during that week, since the whole point is to have a week where the
fandom is flood with Blink fics. :) I'll accept one-shots or the
beginning of a new multi-chapter fic, but the fic must be *new*.
There are four categories: Best Characterization (of Blink,
obviously), Best Slash fic, Best Het/Gen fic, and Best Fic overall.
When July 15 rolls around and you can post your entries, send me the
following information if you want them to be entered/included in the
Blink Week archive:
Your name and email
The URL where your fic can be found
Fic title
Fic rating
Summary
The email to send them to is kidblink@.... (If you must send
them as an attachment/text, that's fine, but posting them elsewhere
and sending me a link is preferred.)
Also: I am a stickler for spelling and punctuation. If you need to
brush up on these, you might want to check out Fanfic101:
http://queenitsy.com/newsies/fanfic101/ .
As for the "other stuff," I'm trying to put together a list of newsies
websites that are still active, since a lot of the ones I've run
across tend to be, well, dead. I'd like to put together a pretty
comprehensive links list, but at the same time what I'm really looking
for are sites that have clean layouts and original content. So if you
have one or know of one, please do let me know. (Again, the email is
kidblink@....)
And I think that about does it. Email me with any questions, of course.

Right... so call me stupid, but the whole "delete all your songfics or your account will be deleted" thing means what exactly? That all fics that include any songs in them have to be deleted?

Hey everyone,
Chill. Ff.net has banned songfics, yeah. It happens. It's a
privately owned site that we all get to use for free. Xing has the
right to allow whatever he wants. Besides, this decision was most
likely a response to legal problems, and even if ff.net isn't the
greatest archive in terms of quality, it is an essential part of the
fandom, and we should appreciate the awesome service that they do
give. Yes, it isn't perfect but still. You don't have to use their
service, you're free to make your own site, or go to somewhere like
fandomination.net.
I mean, I know that I was upset at first - I have my own fics that I
need to take down, which I should probably get around to, but flying
off the handle and sending flames isn't going to help anyone.
If you really don't like them that much, you don't have to use them,
but you really can't force Xing to change his mind.
~TSB
This sucks. Songfics are awesome, and for every crummy songfic out there there's one that is well written and an excellent contribution to the fanfiction community. Music expresses emotion in a way that few other things can capture (No pun intended!) and banning songfics is a big step backward. FF.net has too many rules. I can understand them imposing restrictions in order to avoid legal issues, but that's too far. They've crossed a line. As for that nasty email? I'll write it. Right now, in fact. And if anyone wants to start a fanfiction site similar to theirs, I'd use it for sure. As long as it's free. If anyone wants to do anything along those lines, I'll be glad to help you get it off the ground by writing for it and letting others know about it. Just let me know what I can do...
Wait...WHAT?! Are you fucking KIDDING me?! What the hell is that all about? When did they announce that crap? No songfics? Im getting REEEEEEALLY pissed off at them, they installed a new rule that we aren't allowed to post Casting Call stories because of some shit like, they aren't made up characters or whatever and then they told us that we aren't allowed to have conversations like when the characters are on MSN or AOL instant messenger when a published author, R.L. freakin STINE has it in one of his PUBLISHED books and I can prove it! That's a bunch of crap. If that 12 yr old did it or whatever, I havent been on recently so I dont know what's going on, I'm going to be royally pissed even more than I am now.
"If you don't delete your song fics, we'll delete your account" - WHAT THE HELL?! You're joking right? Please tell me your kidding.
THAT'S IT! I seriously say someone send them a ranting e-mail, ranting but not out of control, telling those STUPID people over at FF that what they are doing is compltetly insane, not to mention they'll loose A LOT of great, talented authors.
Whoever makes a website speaking out against FF, count me in.

I agree with B. They have every right to do it, and I understand why because the abuse on FF.net is ridiculous. It's just easier to ban the thing entirely, rather than weed out. I mean, take a look at the link when you click on a new story to read...that number in the link is it's rank on the entire site.
I was sort of peeved when they first announced it and spent nearly 2 hours taking down everything that I saw as a potential threat and backing it all up. I'm going to start putting everything in a livejournal I have (stage_longsama) and only put the first parts on FF.net. I like starting chapters or one-shots off with a nice bit of poetry or lyric, or something of that kind, but--if you'll pardon my language--shit happens. I just wish that FF.net would stop making all these new rules in the middle of everything. But, as they expand, they have to exercise more and more control :/
If we take a step back, we realize that as fanfiction authors, we don't have very many rights.
But if I ever write that bestselling novel, you all are welcome to write fanfiction for it! :D
I actually don't think their quality has been slipping--in a site that
large that doesn't require editors (as nothing online really can),
there's nothing to expect except a high percentage and crap. And while
songfics can be very interesting and very well done, a whole lot of
them just aren't--I think the wording of the new policy is too
ambiguous, but it's a privately run site and does have the right to
make and enforce whatever rules it so chooses. The new rule is
inconvenient for me, but since I post there and enjoy their services
for free, I don't think I have a high horse to get on and complain.
Like Sparks said, people who don't like it should just go somewhere
else. (For example, there's a small Newsies section at
fandomination.net and a few others; and I really think that an archive
for the Newsies fandom would be of great benefit--mine is slash only,
but a general one, I mean.)

MANY of my story ideas, and this is just ridiculous.
Gahh. We need to write something to FF.Net that says if they're going
to get so caught up in legal issues that we will just find somewhere
else to post. They don't have the monopoly on fanfiction and although
I realize they're protecting themselves from lawsuits, they have to
realize that the quality of their site has been slowly slipping for a
while now, and they won't be a site anymore if they keep this up.
Gah.

And after it rains, there's a rainbow
And all of the colors are black
It's not that the colors aren't there
It's just imagination they lack
Everything's the same back
In my little town
So, now that ff.net has decided to instigate a new rule of "no songfics, end of story" ... I'm gone. See ya!
I'll set up my own archive soon enough but yeah, I'm GONE.
...
That is just... ARG.
I thought ff.net was for all kinds of fanfiction. But now we can't put song lyrics in it? Just because some stupid 12 yr old posts an entry wherein the only thing is the lyrics of a song with a brief "From so-and-so's POV" comment at the top and NO credit to the actual artist... that shouldn't go against all of us.
And, for another thing, this nice little "If you don't delete your song fics, we'll delete your account" bullcrap? I hate that they can just run us over like this.

numero uno: must be modern slash with either (or all, if you're ambitious) of the following three pairs
Blink/Jack Spot/David Snitch/Race
and no, you can't get away with a generic slashy boy. try to emulate the characters from the movie as much as you possibly can.
numero duo (optional): can be inspired by (but not SET TO, necessarily) one of your favourite songs. or a song you hate. or any song. you don't have to include lyrics, but you can. just don't incorporate them into the dialogue or i'll hit you.
trois: must include three of the following lines (more, if you desire it so).
"Take it off." "This isn't helping. It's doing nothing. It's doing NEGATIVE helping." "That shit just makes me wanna go kick my dog." "Get. The fuck. Off." "She was wearing a rubber nurse costume, -name-, A RUBBER NURSE COSTUME!" "Whatever happened to that guy?" "If I
called you fuckmuffin, would you hit me?" -pause- "Seriously?"

Have at, lovely ones.
BEHOLD! I LIIIIIIIIIIVVVVVVEEEEEE!
http://fanfiction.net/~kappertje. The fic is called "Six Days for
Salvation". I'd appreciate if you all gave it a look-see. You know
what it's like coming back after hiatus. You're noivous.
I totally forgot to send this with the fic email earlier, apologies Keza. My prompt!
Write an entire fic about a thing, it can be a kitten or puppy to a hat or kite or window frame. But write a fic about how that one thing has a special meaning for one of the newsies.
