I saw Jarmusch at Columbia College in Chicago - 12/03. He screened Mystery
Train
and then spoke and took questions for about 30 minutes. He was great. A
student
asked about what he thought about having "conflict" in film to move the
narrative. JJ
replied by saying that he hated conflict. He doesn't like conflict in his
films. The
student again asked if it was necessary to move the plot. He said, "I don't."
The
whole room was silent for what seemed like a long time. He also said that he
owns
every film negative and it is sitting at his house in a freezer--I paraphrase,
but I am
sure that was his tone. It was a great exerience. I had a shoot set up in my
Lighting
Class that day and it was cancelled because he was going to speak--and because
everyone ditched class (ha)--but it was worth it. I shot my project a week
later. He
was in town to guest host at the Movieside Film Festival in Chicago @ The
Biograph
Theater. He showed a short, "Int.-Night-Trailer and Down By Law. Anyway, I'm
new
here. Thanks for the site. Best,
