i am a sruggling actor living in north east PA. i have been speaking
with several agents for the past year now and now for some reason they
are no longer taking my msgs and in some cases their services has been
disconnected, so i am guessing that they are being affected by the
economic times as well as everyone else. this means that i have lost
all connections to finding work to do tv/films and i would need to
start over, any suggestions out there, i am still trying to reach some
of the bigger agencies but with no luck, and i am running out of ideas
here and i am unsure of what to do next.....any help will be greatly
appreciated.
Over five million people have died during the past decade as a result of the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Few people are aware of the unimaginable scale of human suffering, death, and destruction that has occurred in this vast country deep in the heart of Africa. In the aftermath of this brutal war, children have endured the brunt of the suffering. This 67 minute film documents the plight of thousands of street children living in Kinshasa and confirms the wide-spread accusations of child witchcraft, torture and child prostitution. The film also examines the efforts to reintegrate demobilized child soldiers, displaced refugees, and orphaned children following the eruption of the massive Nyiragongo volcano, near the city of Goma in Eastern Congo. These heroic efforts
are finally bringing some measure of hope and stability to the lives of the Congolese people. Please watch the trailer at: http://www.danballuff.com

We are looking for a completed, feature length dark drama or gritty
thriller scripts which involve a hardened male character (24-28
preferred but not required) who interacts with a young, "weird and
independent but interesting and bright" 11-13 year old female
character, i.e. something in the vein of "The Professional," "Sling
Blade," "Taxi Driver," or "City of Lost Children." The male character
in the story should have enough moral sense to not hurt the child,
and should learn something from the kid as the story unfolds, perhaps
even becoming a mentor to, and then later becoming mentored by the
child character. We especially favor stories where the communication
between the main characters takes place more through body language
than dialogue, such that the acting is more in the eyes and less in
the conversation. And we're especially interested in a hard, gritty,
dark role for the female character. Budget for this project will not
exceed $1.5 million. WGA and non-WGA writers may submit.

Hello J. Podolsky,
I just submitted a request to join movietalk. I am the producer of the Out! For Reel Film Series, the new LGBT films series in the Valley. Out! For Reel's mission is to show the best in LGBT films throughout the year. We had a great turnout for our premiere event at the Academy of Music on Sept 27 with the screening of The World Unseen -- about 700 people attended.
I am hoping you will add Out! For Reel's website to the links page of your group's website: www.OutForReel.org.
Out! For Reel Film Series is showing two more outstanding films this year: Breakfast With Scot on Nov 15 at 5:00 & 7:30 pm at Smith College and Tru Loved on Dec 6 at 7:30 pm at the Northampton High School Auditorium. Will you let your members know about these films?
Thanks for your help. I look forward to joining movietalk.
The festival needs your support. So check out some films this weekend! I believe the festival will flourish in future years with our support. Check out this recent article:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AMHERST CINEMA TO RUN SERIES “FILM AND ’68 – HOT AND COOL”
Marks 40th Anniversary of 1968 with Films and Audience Discussions
Amherst, September 15 -- Starting on
Monday, Sept. 29, the Amherst Cinema Arts Center
will be presenting an eight-week retrospective of
films that capture the essence of 1968, one of
the most turbulent years in western history since World War II.
“This retrospective, which we’ve
named “Film and ’68 – Hot and Cool,” presents a
sampling of films that mark the legacy of 1968,”
said Carol M. Johnson, Executive Director of the
Amherst Cinema. “From Paris to Chicago to
Vietnam, 1968 was a year of tremendous hope and
violent dashing of hopes. The upheavals of 40
years ago radically transformed the social and
political landscape and changed film culture, too.”
Johnson said the eight films
selected (see list below) were chosen from a list
of over 100 films because they were
representative of the era. “The films invite
audiences to consider lessons learned from
movements for radical change,” she said.
“Collectively, the films also mark a major
departure from the classic Hollywood film genres that preceded them.”
All but the final screening will be
shown in 35mm. “Seeing these films in 35mm on the
big screen is not to be missed,” Johnson added.
The film series will run on
consecutive Mondays from Sept. 29 through Nov. 10
at 7 p.m. Monday evening screenings will include
introductions by Five College film faculty and
post-film discussions led by these film experts.
Second showings of each film are scheduled for
consecutive Wednesdays at 2 p.m.
The final show of the series is a
one-time DVD showing of the latest work by
contemporary filmmaker John Gianvito, who will be
present for the screening. This show is scheduled
at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19.
In terms of style, the films range
from the surreal science fiction favorite, “2001:
A Space Odyssey,” to the intensely controversial
“Hearts and Minds,” a critique of the Vietnam
war. Michael Antonioni's loose narrative
"Zabriskie Point" features the music of Pink
Floyd and the Grateful Dead. “Medium Cool” mixes
love and the relevance of protest at the 1968
Democratic Convention. Jean-Luc Godard's "La
Chinoise," was eerily prescient about the student
uprisings which followed the film’s release.
The series helps fulfill the mission
of the Amherst Cinema to serve as a “cultural
crossroads” for the region. “This is a place
where all generations can meet. Whether you are a
film lover, academic or student, our
state-of-the-art cinema is an ideal location to
see film as it was meant to be seen, and to
exchange ideas, Johnson said. “And to be entertained in the bargain.”
Film and ’68 – Hot and Cool is
presented in cooperation with the film studies
seminar on 1968 and the Social Change
Colloquium: 1968 at UMass Amherst, along with
other events in the Five College area.

Hi all. I am currently doing some research for a documentary I am
planning to film in the fall. It would help me a ton if you could fill
out this one minute survey.
www.dcsouth.com/stiffed
Also, if you are interested in learning more about and working on the
film with me, send me an email.
Hi everyone,
I recently moved to Springfield for work. I was in Atlanta the past 4
years for college and frequently visited the art theater nearby for
foreign language and independent film. It's nice to see that there's
actually a group for this in the area. I'd love to attend screenings
and get to discuss after the viewing. I don't really know anyone in
the area, so I'll be looking forward to meeting people with similar
interests as well.
I am writing because I am new to the group. I also just moved to
Amherst to work at UMass from St. Louis, though I am from NY
originally. I am a big movie fan from box office hits to independent
films. I usually try to see all of the Academy Award nominees before
the awards.
I am also looking forward to meeting some new people!
Stacey
Welcome to the new group members! We have had several new people sign up recently and still have around 150 members signed up for the listserv. We haven't had in person meetings for a while. Let's start them up again.

Hello everybody -- I was wondering whether any of you might have
information about this year's Northampton Independent Film Festival
(NIFF)? It is my understanding that Kate will no longer be serving as
Director of Programming, and I just tried calling the NIFF main office
and learned that the phone had been temporarily disconnected(!) -- any
news or information would be greatly appreciated (I had served on the
screening committee last year, and had hoped to do so again this year..)
best wishes,
Linda
Welcome to the group Dr. Young. Nice to have you join us and would be good to network with the film department as well.
Did you all now we have a myspace page? You can click here to access it and feel free to join it, there are a number of interesting friends on there: myspace.com/movietalk
Anyone want to meet for film discussion this week or next?
I'm thinking of Sex and the City at Pleasant St. or Up the Yangzee at Amherst Cinema. Details for both at http://www.amherstcinema.org/
Jonathon
Hi everyone,
My name is Michael Young and I am not only new to the group, but
new to Northampton. I am on the faculty at Smith. I am looking forward
to the discussion and meeting the people the group has to offer. I am
interested in learning more about film making, as I currently have
ideas about making a documentary, but not so much experience and/or
equipment. I hope to hear from ya'll.
