WGBH Lab partners with National Black Programming Consortium to present new Open Call

The WGBH Lab and National Black Programming Consortium collaborate to present the Lab’s new Open Call. The WGBH Lab Open Call seeks big ideas for small screens, including mobile devices, Web sites and television broadcast.

For the new Open Call, the WGBH Lab and National Black Programming Consortium invite filmmakers and other aspiring media-makers to pitch an idea for a video short (of approximately three minutes) looking at the issue of how we resolve past wrongs, especially around matters of race. Pitches might explore themes of belonging versus expulsion, anger versus forgiveness, guilt versus reparations. A successful pitch offers a new approach to story-telling and presents a surprising visual style, a fresh genre or a unique voice. The deadline is December 12, 2007, and users of the Lab site will be able to comment on and review pitches chosen by WGBH. Visit http://lab.wgbh.org.

Selected pitches will receive production funding and editorial support. Finished shorts may be presented in conjunction with WGBH’s and PBS's African American History Month programming in February, via broadcast and broadband. The Lab will also consider completed shorts (rather than only preliminary pitches) that address these themes.

ITVS has co-produced, in association with National Black Programming Consortium, the film “Banished,” to be broadcast on Independent Lens in February 2008. “Banished” explores how slavery and racism reverberated into 20th-century America with the violent removal of black families from their communities from the 1860s to the 1920s.

About National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC)
Since 1979, NBPC has been a leading provider on American public television of quality, intelligent and compelling programming that celebrates the cultural heritage of African Americans and the African Diaspora. NBPC is one of five ethnic consortia funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). The Consortia function as developers, producers, and distributors of radio and television programming that appeals to diverse audiences and harnesses the creative talents of minority communities. Visit http://nbpc.tv.

Looks interesting.  There seem to have been some great Iranian films that have made it to the US market over the years.  I think UMass is an underpublisized/great resource for film screenings--including the multicultural film festival, DEFA film library festivals, and great films shown by various departments.  I wish there was a good website that listed all these.  Some are listed on the Five College Calendar of events but it seems that most are not.

Subject: Pleasant Street Theater

Friends,

Northampton is in danger of losing another landmark. The Pleasant
Street Theater, which has screened unique movies in Northampton for three
decades, is on the brink of shutting its doors for good.   We have witnessed
the closing of the Calvin and most recently, the Academy of Music as film
venues and now the last remaining screen is threatened. The Pleasant Street
Theater and the independent and foreign films it has traditionally shown,
has been an important part of the mosaic that makes Northampton the “Best
Small Arts City in America.”

The Pleasant Street Theater does more than just offer locals excellent
entertainment.  It also draws others to town where they dine at our
restaurants and shop in our stores. Smith students have been able to easily
walk to the movies. If the theater closes, they will have to drive to Hadley
or Amherst.

The current owners of the theater and the building’s new owner appear to be
willing to bend over backwards to keep the theater operating, but no one has
stepped forward with sufficient operating capital or expertise. The theater
will close at the end of December.    We are proposing that a non-profit
entity take over the operation of the Pleasant Street since it has been
unsuccessful in the for-profit model.  In order to make this a success,  it
will require a significant commitment from the community as the theater will
need a facelift to compete with newer cinemas.

We are asking area residents to show a commitment to save Pleasant
Street Theater by making a tax-deductible monetary pledge and contacting
friends and neighbors, asking them to get involved as well. This effort
needs to be mounted quickly. We realistically have to show that there is
enough interest and good will to save the theater by December 20. I believe
we can do it by telephoning and using e-mail. You can pledge an amount by
e-mailing silas@... and we will get back to you about actually
writing a check when we secure an amount large enough to approach the owners
of the business and the building.

If you agree with us that the fabric of Northampton without Pleasant
Street would be greatly diminished, please consider making a significant
pledge as well as contacting others who might share our concern.

Sincerely,

Bruce and Rita Bleiman              Silas and Linda Kopf

P.S.

We are getting many positive responses to this email, but time is of the essence, and we need as much help as we can get. If you
would like to see the Pleasant Street Theater live on, please let us know. Also, we are hoping you will forward this message to any friends
you think may be interested as well.
Thanks!
Linda Kopf

Friends,

We have been astounded by the response we've had to our earlier email
about the Pleasant Street Theater. In less than a week, we have
received pledges ranging from $10 to $10,000 totaling over $45,000.
Responses have come from as far away as Maine, London, Puerto Rico,
and California (we even had an e-mail from Tasmania). The theater
clearly occupies a special place in the minds of many people.

We have asked the Amherst Cinema to undertake operation of the
theater and they are willing – provided the financial support is
there. With their tax-exempt status already in place, they will be
able to step in and run the movie house almost seamlessly. Our two
screens will increase their influence with distributors and their
operating expertise will help provide a secure future for the theater
in our community.

Amherst Cinema wants to be able to provide the same experience as
patrons have in Amherst. To accomplish this would mean new seats,
online ticketing, and other amenities, while preserving the character
of the original theater. They have assured us that Pleasant Street
would be treated as an equal partner, and they would need people from
our side of the river on the organization's board of directors. Much
to our surprise, this alliance would require a commitment now of only
$100,000 from Northampton supporters, to secure a lease and reopen
the theater. The amount needed to reopen our beloved landmark is a
fraction of the cost of building and equipping another theater!

We need the remaining $55,000 as soon as possible. We ask that those
of you who have already pledged to send your check, made out to
Amherst Cinema Arts Center, Inc. with a note in the memo
line "Pleasant Street Reopening." All contributions are tax
deductible and will be held in reserve until there are enough funds
raised for the reopening to go forward. If, for any reason Amherst
Cinema does not reopen the theater, your money will be returned.
Those who are interested but have not yet pledged should do the same,
but also send an email to silas@... noting the amount so we
can keep a tally. The address is: Amherst Cinema Arts Center, 28
Amity St., Amherst, MA 01002.

We are almost half way to the goal and we hope you will forward this
letter and reach out to your friends who might be sympathetic to this
effort.

Many thanks for your support.

Dear Friends,

The community support to save the Pleasant Street Theater has been tremendous.  We have asked the nonprofit Amherst Cinema to reopen the theater and operate it and they are willing, provided the financial support is there.

In ten days, we received over $80,000 in pledges from almost five hundred individuals.  Because so many forwarded our original message to friends, the responses have come from around the world.  As you probably heard, now the Northampton Center for the Arts is pitching in and we are on track to reach the $100,000 needed right now.

The Amherst Cinema reports that 195 donations totaling over $47,000 have poured in so far.  We thank those of you who have already sent a check.  If you have not done so, please send your pledge directly to:

Amherst Cinema Arts Center, Inc.
28 Amity Street
Amherst MA 01002

Please write in the notation line “”Pleasant Street Theater Reopening”.

Your donation is tax-deductible and will be held in reserve until there are enough funds raised for the reopening to move ahead.  If for any reason Amherst Cinema does not reopen the theater, your money will be returned.

If you are interested in pledging and haven’t yet done so, please send an email to silas@..., noting the amount so we can keep a tally.

Lease negotiations are underway between the Amherst Cinema and the building owner and things look very promising on that score.  Unfortunately, the sale of the equipment remains in limbo and may add to the funds needed.  But once all of that is resolved and the financial support from the community is in hand, we can look forward to a refurbished theater that includes an on-line ticketing service, new seating and a spiffed up lobby and concession area.

Again, thanks so much for responding so quickly at such a busy time of the year.  We look forward to seeing you at the movies!

Have you seen the new Marquette Williams film starring Elimu Nelson
entitled UNSPEKABLE, I saw it in L.A. and it was chilling! If you
have not seen this film you're missing out on the birth of a new young
director. Unspeakable will be screening in the Cleveland International
Film Festival March 6-16th. It's a dark thriller about a man that takes
a family hostage. Composer Adrian Bailey creates a haunting score. It
is produced by Dennis Knowles, Moni Boyce and Desi Green. I found some

My latest short film titled

"24 frames per day"

will be screening at the

SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL
Treasure Mountain Inn
255 Main Street
Park City, Utah

on January 20th, 2008 at 2:30pm
and
January 23rd, 2008 at 4:30pm

24 frames per day was conceived by combining 24 photographs captured each day
over a
period of 9 months. Yes, that's what makes this baby! And it's the same
photograph each
day, or rather the same frame each day. A daily meditation by the filmmaker
photographing the front door of her "home" makes this a very personal and
political film
that raises important questions around immigration, cultural stereotypes, and
diasporic
identity.

Hi,

Wanted to share a independent Short Film I made on a shoe string budget.

The link is http://www.ifilm.com/profile/akkiboy/video/2930792

The story is about a guy called James McAllister who has a perfect life
and a perfect wife but only he realises that its all pretentious.
Destiny gives him a chance to redeem himself and the film is about how
he reacts when he gets the chance. The movie begins with James playing
a board game with his friend Jay and he get to a point in the game
where he has to take a huge gamble. The entire film plays in flashback
after that.

The living room scene is slightly awkward but the rest is just fine.

Hope you like it

you can view it on their website on this link:

I'm not sure whether it's part of the physical exhibit or just the
online/catalog version, but I'm chuffed regardless.

Cheers (and watch it!)

a little background:
Elephants Dream was premiered in Amsterdam (where it was made) in 2006-
it's an "open" movie project- in that:
we released the movie under a creative commons (CC BY) license
we released all the production files under the same license
we released (well, it already existed) the software used to make the
movie under the same license

So if you got the movie, you also got the right/ability to make your own
versions of it, remix, re-use, mashup, etc.

Our project was called "project orange", there is a new one called
"project peach" ( http://peach.blender.org ) and an open game project
( http://apricot.blender.org ) going on right now.

I'm also working on another short, as yet, unannounced online (But will
be soon)

I'll bite.

My favorite moment was when John Stewart had Marketa Irglova come back out to give her acceptance speech after she had been shut down by the music.
I know they're just trying to stick to a schedule, but it's still rude when people aren't allowed to finish (or in some cases even start) their speeches -- especially so when it's not a 'star.'  Good for John Stewart (or whoever made that call).

I haven't seen Once, and wasn't  particularly even interested in it, but I'll probably check it out now.

I was going to say exactly the same thing. My favorite happening was that the song from Once beat out all of that Disney stuff. And I liked the thank you's by both of the winners. Oh, and I liked when Cameron Diaz made fun of herself for mispronouncing cinematography.

The scripted nonsense by the presenters was less noticeable than in previous years, but why do they keep writing in such unfunny stuff?

I didn't see many of the winning movies/performances. Did people who saw them agree with the winner choices?

ANNOUNCING VALLEYWOOD II –
A Celebration of the Digital Arts in the Pioneer Valley

DATE: Saturday, March 8

TIME: 2 – 3:30 p.m.

LOCATION: Jones Library, Amity Street, Amherst

COST: $10 for the public; $8 Chamber members

The Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce and Reader
to Reader Inc., with support from A – Z
International Associates, is announcing
VALLEYWOOD II – A Celebration of the Digital Arts in the Pioneer Valley.

The opening program features John Katzenbach,
Amherst resident and the acclaimed author of
numerous books that have been turned into film,
including Just Cause and Hart’s War.

Katzenbach’s talk, entitled “THE GOOD, THE BAD
AND THE UGLY – Why I Love Hollywood and Why I
Hate Hollywood,” is scheduled from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8.

VALLEYWOOD II is planned as an ongoing series of
afternoon weekend lectures by regional writers,
screenwriters, film-makers, animators, special
effects, sound and others who are developing
content for Hollywood, television and a wide
range of mobile devices – all of whom fit into
what is commonly called the “digital economy” or “new media.”

The aim is to schedule one, mid-afternoon lecture
per month during the school year on either a
Saturday or Sunday in the lower level large
meeting room of the Jones Library, or other
locations in Amherst to be announced.

Other speakers this spring include Dan Giat of
Pelham (Saturday, April 12), author of Path to
War, which was nominated for an Emmy Award in
2002 after airing on HBO. David Shepherd
(Saturday, May 10), is an improv theater and
video master, founder of Compass (the granddaddy
of “Saturday Night Live”) and Group Creativity,
as well as the author of That Movie in Your Head.

Katzenbach, who was once a criminal court
reporter for The Miami Herald and Miami News has
been published in a wide number of newspapers.
Previous novels include In the Heat of the
Summer, adapted for the screen as The Mean
Season, and The Shadow Man. He is also author of
the New York Times bestseller The Traveler, as
well as Day of Reckoning. Filming of the script
he wrote based on The Madman's Tale is schedule to start filming this spring.

“Having one’s work adapted for film is a
bittersweet affair. There are many positives and
many negatives, and I’ll talk about both. The one
thing you learn is why you love Hollywood and why
you hate it. But from the novelist’s point of
view it’s a terrific adventure,” Katzenbach said.

Admission at the door is $10 for the general
public; $8 for Chamber members. Seating is first
come, first serve. No food will be served, but
the audience is welcome to bring snacks.

The WGBH Lab and P.O.V. announce new Open Call: Election 2008

Visit http://lab.wgbh.org

The 2008 presidential election is already one for the history books. This spring, the WGBH Lab and PBS’s P.O.V. documentary series offer filmmakers a chance to make their voices heard before the voting booths open.

The WGBH Lab and P.O.V. invite filmmakers to submit ideas for a compelling video short related to the upcoming election. Filmmakers can submit a pitch between April 7th and May 2nd. Stories could be about an ongoing national or local issue, memories of elections past, or insight on how our new president can make vital  changes. The WGBH Lab will post video pitches, invite the public to vote for their favorites, and choose the top ideas for production. As filmmakers complete their short films, industry professionals and users of the Lab site will post comments and suggestions. Selected films (approximately three minutes in length) will receive $2000 in financial support, will be featured online at www.pbs.org/pov and may be broadcast on PBS. For more details on the submission process visit http://lab.wgbh.org/open-call/election2008.

On Tuesday June 24, P.O.V. will kick off its 2008 season on PBS with “Traces of the Trade” by Katrina Browne, the first filmmaker to participate in WGBH’s Filmmaker-in-Residence program. Browne worked on “Traces of the Trade” at WGBH from 2003-2005. The Filmmaker-in-Residence program is a part of the WGBH Lab, and invites filmmakers and innovators from related industries to work on their independently funded projects during a nine-month residency at WGBH.

In “Traces of the Trade,” an Official Selection of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, first-time filmmaker Katrina Browne makes a troubling discovery—her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine fellow descendants set off to retrace the Triangle Trade: from their old hometown in Rhode Island to slave forts in Ghana to sugar plantation ruins in Cuba. Step by step, they uncover the vast extent of Northern complicity in slavery while also stumbling through the minefield of contemporary race relations.

Other documentaries airing this season on P.O.V. related to the upcoming election include “Election Day” by Katie Chevigny, “Campaign” by Kazuhiro Soda, “The Ballad of Esequiel Hernandez” by Kieran Fitzgerald, “Critical Condition” by Roger Weisberg, and “Soldiers of Conscience” by Catherine Ryan and Gary Weimberg. The programs tell stories that deal with critical election issues such as voter turnout, healthcare, the Iraq war, race relations, election reform, immigration and border security, and the health of democracy, both in America and around the world. Film descriptions, filmmaker bios and video trailers are available now at the P.O.V. Web site (www.pbs.org/pov ). Selected short films from the Open Call may be licensed for use via broadcast or broadband with airings of the P.O.V. films.

Hi everyone,

My name is Michael Young and I am not only new to the group, but new to Northampton. I am on the faculty at Smith. I am looking forward to the discussion and meeting the people the group has to offer. I am interested in learning more about film making, as I currently have ideas about making a documentary, but not so much experience and/or equipment. I hope to hear from ya'll.

Thanks for having me.

Dr. Michael Young
