i have one but you would probably find it a lot easier to just borrow
any mini-dv format camcorder from a friend...
then just connect up a firewire cable and use whatever software you
have or are familiar with and capture the tape.
the mini-dv decks are generally either the desktop/rackmount variety
meant for use in an edit bay to capture tapes, or one of the small
portable ones with the lcd screen so you could watch a tape on
location or record a parallel copy.
i have seen the one i have on some behind the scenes of movies made 4
or 5 years ago where they would use a video tap out of a film camera
and then they could have a very basic instant way to replay a take.
i have used mine on occasions where you either can't use a
professional monitor or when you need a second screen for someone to use.
the portable ones are fairly delicate and rather expensive and i
don't know of anyone who rents them.
you could probably buy a low end mini-dv camera for what a production
mini-dv deck would rent for.
