Thirteen Days (Rated PG-13)
Starring: Kevin Costner, Bruce Greenwood, Steven Culp
Release Date: January 12, 2001 (wide)

Review by Susan Granger
SSG Syndicate
http://www.susangranger.com

Get a baby-sitter, climb in your car, stand in line, buy a ticket
and see this strong, very involving chronicle of 13
tension-filled days in October, 1962, when the United States
stood on the brink of a nuclear catastrophe. While the movie
opens with an ominous mushroom cloud, the Cuban Missile Crisis
began when U.S. spy planes discovered that the Soviets had
installed medium-range ballistic missiles on Cuba. President
John F. Kennedy and his White House advisors were stunned: "I
feel as if we've caught the Jap carrier steaming for Pearl
Harbor!" But no one more than Kennedy's loyal "Irish Mafia"
crony, Kenneth O'Donnell, through whose eyes the chaos, confusion
and confrontation are seen. Even though you know the outcome,
writer David Self and director Roger Donaldson ("No Way Out")
create an urgent, ferociously suspenseful, behind-closed-doors
ambiance, particularly in the diplomatic showdown at the UN
Security Council. Newsreel footage along with Andrzej
Bartkowiak's photography, Dennis Washington's production design,
Isis Mussenden's costumes and Trevor Jones' music evoke the era.
Bruce Greenwood is perfect as JFK as is Steven Culp as his
brother Robert. As O'Donnell, Kevin Costner is splendid, even
grappling with a Boston accent. The rest of the cast is equally
admirable, and real-life Kennedy nephew, Christopher Lawford,
plays a jet pilot. However, it should be noted that,
historically, O'Donnell had little of the importance as a
decision-maker or crisis counselor that he's given in this
docu-drama.

On the Granger Movie Gauge of 1 to 10, "Thirteen Days" is a
chillingly effective, spellbinding 10. As Abba Eban said,
"History teaches us that men and nations behave wisely once they
have exhausted all other alternatives."

6. CELEBRITY PROFILE
==========
KEVIN COSTNER
================================================

Kevin was born Kevin Michael Costner on January 18, 1955 and
raised in California by his father Bill Costner, a ditch digger
and ultimately an electric line servicer for Southern California
Edison, and his mother Sharon. As a teen he sang in the Baptist
church choir, wrote poetry, and took writing classes. Despite his
present height, he was only 5'2" when he graduated high school.
Nonetheless, he still managed to be a basketball, football, and
baseball star. Thanks to a late growth spurt, he had topped out
at six feet by the time he enrolled at Cal-State Fullerton, where
he earned a degree in marketing. During that period, Kevin
decided to take acting lessons five nights a week and a casting
call for a local production of Rumpelstiltskin launched him on
his career path.

Making his screen bow in "Sizzle Beach, U.S.A" (1981), Costner
spent the next few years puttering around Hollywood, taking on
Small roles in mostly meager films, which kept him employed
during the early '80s. His big break seemed to arrive when
Lawrence Kasdan tapped him to play Alex, the charismatic friend
whose suicide reunites a group of former 1960s rebels in "The Big
Chill." Unfortunately, Costner's originally healthy share of
screen time was edited down to several fleeting glimpses of him
in the undemanding role of Alex's corpse. To make it up to the
struggling young actor, Kasdan tapped Costner for "Silverado" two
years later. The movie was a hit, and, finally, so was Costner.

His next two movies ("The Untouchables" and "No Way Out")
garnered solid reviews and widespread recognition, but it was a
pair of baseball flicks that catapulted him from rising star to
celebrity. The national pastime was never sexier than in 1988's
"Bull Durham" and 1989's "Field of Dreams." Costner went on to
produce, direct, and star in an epic Western, Dances With Wolves
which nabbed him an Academy Award for Best Picture and Best
Director. Costner went on to star in some good and not so good
movies including, "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," "The
Bodyguard," "JFK," "A Perfect World," "Waterworld," "Tin Cup,"
"The Postman," "Message in a Bottle," and "For Love of the Game."
Costner's production company, Tig Productions, currently juggles
numerous projects in various stages of development, including a
sequel to "The Bodyguard." You can see Kevin in the upcomming
film "Thirteen Days."
