GRIFFITH IN DRUG TREATMENT
Actress Melanie Griffith has entered a hospital program to treat
an addiction to prescription drugs, her publicist said Tuesday.
"My doctor has referred me to the Daniel Freeman Hospital to step
down from the prescribed medication that I have been taking for a
neck injury," Griffith said in a statement released to reporters
through her publicist. "I appreciate everyone's concern and I am
sure that you will respect my and my family's privacy."
CREEK-ER NAMED HEAD OF STATE
Dawson's Creek hottie Joshua Jackson will star in the big screen
comedy Lone Star State of Mind. Jackson will juggle both his WB
series and the film when shooting begins in January. Dave Semel -
who has directed Jackson during Creek's first two seasons - will
make his feature directorial debut with Lone Star.
LITTLE NICKY EARNS LESS
Adam Sandler's satanic comedy Little Nicky did worse at the box
office than first thought. Initial studio estimates had the film
grossing $18.1 million over the weekend, but final numbers show
that it pulled in $15.26 million. The pic still held onto the No.
2 position, behind Charlie's Angels.
GRIER ADDED TO 'LOVE THE HARD WAY'
Pam Grier has been added to the cast of the indie feature "Love
the Hard Way" for director Peter Sehr. The film is about a petty
thief (Adrien Brody) who meets an innocent young woman (Charlotte
Ayanna) and brings her into his world of crime while she teaches
him the lessons of enjoying life and being loved. Grier plays a
sharp New York police detective.
DINOSAUR NAMED AFTER CRICHTON
Michael Crichton, who brought dinosaurs to life in his
best-selling novels, now has a species of the real thing named
after him. Dinosaur specialist Dong Zhiming, lead researcher at
Beijing's Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and
Paleoanthropology, said he chose to honor the author of "Jurassic
Park" and "The Lost World" because of the popularity of
Crichton's works in China. "Crichton's ankylosaur" is a small,
armored plant-eating dinosaur that dates to the early Jurassic
Period, about 180 million years ago. Dong, who identified the
species with fossils discovered 62 years ago in southern China,
believes it walked on two legs.
JULIA ROBERTS IN THRILLER
Julia Roberts has committed to star in the as-yet-untitled
"Project 3" for Revolution Studios that reunites her with "The
Mexican" filmmakers Gore Verbinski and J.H. Wyman. The project is
set for an April 1 start. Roberts will star in the psychological
thriller after she completes roles in two other films. After a
turn for her "Erin Brockovich" director Steven Soderbergh in his
ensemble Rat Pack remake "Ocean's Eleven" for Warner Bros.,
Roberts will segue to the Joe Roth-directed comedy "America's
Sweethearts" for Revolution that is scheduled for a January
start.
PEARCE IN 'TIME MACHINE'
Guy Pearce, who most recently starred in Christopher Nolan's
acclaimed thriller "Memento," is in final negotiations to star in
"The Time Machine," a new screen adaptation of H.G. Wells'
classic time-travel novel for DreamWorks and Warner Bros.
'JACKASS' JOHNNY IN 'LIFE WITHOUT DICK'
Johnny Knoxville, star and co-creator of MTV's daredevil reality
series "Jackass," is in negotiations to topline Columbia
Pictures' offbeat romantic comedy "Life Without Dick" opposite
Sarah Jessica Parker. "Dick," written by Skahill, centers on a
woman (Parker) who falls in love with the hit man hired to kill
her boyfriend (Knoxville). Shooting is scheduled to begin next
month in Los Angeles.
HOWARD GOES TO 'WAR'
"Hart's War" that is. Terrence Howard is in negotiations to star
as a prisoner of war falsely accused of murder in MGM's World War
II drama "Hart's War" for director Gregory Hoblit. The project,
starring Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell, is scheduled to begin
shooting in January in Prague. The project centers on Lt. Tommy
Hart (Farrell), a young lawyer fresh out of law school who is
captured in the war and sent to a POW camp. He is asked to defend
Howard's character of the murder charges. Willis will play a
senior officer in the camp.
SAMUEL L. IN 'TRUCK 44'
Samuel L. Jackson is in negotiations to topline Universal
Pictures' "Truck 44," which Peter Berg will direct and produce
from his own script. The project is targeted to start shooting in
2001. "Truck" is a dark drama centering on a group of New York
firefighters, led by Jackson, who attempt an elaborate heist of a
prestigious office building. The plan turns bad when the robbers
inadvertently set off a fire that rages out of control and they
must put out the blaze.
EVERETT, DENCH TO BE EARNEST
Rupert Everett and Judi Dench are close to inking a deal to star
in the film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic comedy The
Importance of Being Earnest. Everett would play Algernon, one of
the two male leads, and Dench is slated to appear as the
disapproving Lady Bracknell. The duo previously worked together
on another Wilde project, An Ideal Husband.
TOY STORY CLEANS UP
Toy Story 2 won seven awards, including Best Animated Theatrical
Feature, at the 28th Annual Annie Awards - presented Saturday by
the International Animated Film Society. The Simpsons took home
top TV honors. Meanwhile, the Joan Cusack-voiced Toy Story 2
character, Jessie the Cowgirl, received the Patsy Montana
Entertainer Award from the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of
Fame on Friday.

MANSON CENSORED
Two retail chains are resisting the cover art of shock rocker
Marilyn Manson's latest album, Holy Wood: In the Valley of the
Shadow of Death. The cover features Manson in a crucifixion
pose with his jaw missing and his eyes rolled back in his head.
Circuit City is using alternate cover art, an equally scary
picture of Manson, in its stores, and Best Buy - while stocking
the album with its original art - has chosen to go with a "less
offensive" cover image in its advertising campaign. "The irony
is that my point of the photo on the album was to show people
that the crucifixion of Christ is, indeed, a violent image,"
Manson said in a message posted on his Web site. "My jaw is
missing as a symbol of this very kind of censorship. This
doesn't piss me off as much as it pleases me, because those
offended by my album cover have successfully proven my point."
MOTORCYCLE RIDE FOR CHARITY
Jay Leno and Peter Fonda were among some 20,000 riders who took
part in the annual 50-mile motorcycle "Love Ride." The event
Sunday, billed as the "largest motorcycle fund-raising event in
the world," was expected to raise more than $1 million for
charities. Other celebrity participants included singers Billy
Idol and Pat Boone, actor Larry Hagman, stuntman Robbie Knievel
and game show host Chuck Woolery. The event raises money for the
Muscular Dystrophy Association and to fight illiteracy.
ELFMAN'S NEW MATERIAL POSSESSION
Jenna Elfman (Dharma & Greg) and hubby Bodhi Elfman have
purchased Madonna's Hollywood Hills home for $4 million. Madonna
put the pad on the market in June when she bought a Beverly Hills
mansion for $6.5 million. Last week, Britain's Sun tabloid
reported that the pop superstar plunked down a cool $10 mil for a
London home.
EMINEM REUNITED WITH WIFE
Grammy-winning Eminem is once again living with estranged wife
Kim Mathers - but, sadly, divorce proceedings continue.
"Sometimes by moving out of a home, one spouse or the other can
be voluntarily abandoning any interest or legal claim to it,"
attorney Neil Rockind told reporters. Eminem, who filed for
divorce in August, has a four-year-old daughter with Mathers.
HUNDREDS PAY TRIBUTE TO ALLEN
Hundreds gathered to pay tribute to entertainer Steve Allen and
celebrate "a life truly well lived." Allen, who died Oct. 30 at
age 78 of an apparent heart attack, was remembered not only as a
talented comedian, musician, composer and author, but also as a
man of integrity.
FAITH HILL LEADS AMA NOMINEES
Country sweetheart Faith Hill received four American Music Award
nominations Monday, leading a pack of artists vying for awards
chosen by fans. Marc Anthony and the rock band Creed received
three nominations, while Toni Braxton, Destiny's Child, Celine
Dion, Eminem, Alan Jackson, 'N Sync, Sisqo and Britney Spears got
two each. The nominees are chosen by music industry data, but the
winners are selected by a national sampling of approximately
20,000 listeners. The awards will be presented Jan. 8 at the
Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles to be broadcast by ABC. Spears
will be the host of the 28th annual show.
TIGER WOODS FINED BY ACTORS UNION
The Screen Actors Guild has teed off on Tiger Woods, fining the
golfer $100,000 for shooting a nonunion Buick commercial during a
six-month strike against advertisers. The union's trial board
suspended half the fine but will reinstate it if Woods makes a
commercial during a future strike.

FINAL SHOWS FOR MISTER ROGERS
Longtime children's TV host Fred Rogers plans to introduce his
last new neighbor next year, his production company announced
Saturday. The 71-year-old host and creator of "Mister Rogers'
Neighborhood" will shoot the final episode of the show in 2001,
but he won't be hanging up his cardigan just yet. After 50 years
in television and 33 years as the show's host, Rogers is turning
his attention to his Web sites, publications and special museum
programs.
WHASSUP
Paramount is developing a sitcom for Scott Brooks, Fred Thomas
Jr. and Paul Williams, the three guys from Budweiser's "Whassup"
commercial. Mad TV writers Devon Shepard and Xavier Cook are
creating the comedy, which will center on the friendship among
three hip guys.
BRITNEY/BUFFY BOUT CANCELLED
Britney Spears has pulled out of a planned guest appearance on
Buffy the Vampire Slayer due to scheduling conflicts. "It's not
happening," co-executive producer Marti Noxon told reporters.
"It's off the plate completely." However, the character Spears
would have played will live on, Noxon adds. "We're still going to
do the episode, we're just going to do it with someone else," she
says, declining to reveal the specifics. "The [story] idea is
still valid, and we're going to go ahead and run with it. But now
that [Britney's] not available, we're going to push that episode
to a little bit later." The pop princess - who is friends with
Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar - isn't ruling out the
possibility of a future appearance. "Britney loves the show, and
she'll probably do it one day," says her rep, "but right now,
they just can't schedule anything."
POLO GETS FRASIER
Meet the Parents star Teri Polo will guest star on the Nov. 28
episode of Frasier as an attractive attorney who woos Frasier.
DRUDGE DROPPED
ABC Radio has dropped Internet gossiper Matt Drudge's syndicated
Sunday talk show.
THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Fred Rogers, the legendary host and creator of Mister Rogers'
Neighborhood, will hang up his last cardigan sweater sometime
next year. Rogers, 71, will focus his attention on his Web sites,
publications and special museum programs.
SHAW SIGNS OFF
Longtime CNN anchorman Bernard Shaw will leave the network on
Feb. 28 after 20 years to reportedly spend more time with his
family and to write books. The 60-year-old Shaw, who became a
household name while covering the Gulf War in 1991, had worked at
ABC and CBS prior to joining CNN. "I am stepping back from the
table to write books, including an autobiography," he said.
"Harder than entering this business is leaving it and leaving
CNN, especially after 20 years here." A CNN rep told reporters
that Judy Woodruff, Shaw's co-anchor on Inside Politics and CNN
WorldView, will host those programs alone after Shaw leaves.
FELICITY, GILMORE EXTENDED
The WB has ordered at least four additional episodes of Felicity
and six more segments of Gilmore Girls. Last week, Felicity
garnered its highest ratings among women age 18-34 since its
debut two years ago. Gilmore Girls, meanwhile, continues to
perform respectably opposite Friends on Thursday nights, and was
just named the best new drama of the season by Viewers for
Quality Television.

MEN OF HONOR
Starring: : Robert De Niro, Cuba Gooding Jr., Charlize Theron
Men of Honor is based on the inspiring true story of the real
life Navy diver Carl Brashear. Brashear (played by Cuba Gooding
Jr.) delivers his struggles as a black man in a white navy. He
was told that as a black man in the services, he had but three
choices; be a cook, be a valet for his commanding officers, or
quit. However, come hell or high water Brashear was going to
become the first African-American navy diver. Billy Sunday
(played by Robert De Niro) is a Navy Master Chief, who tries to
do everything in his power to make Brashear's life a living hell.
Men of Honor is an excellent story of the real life racism that
African-Americans had to face in the 50's and 60's. It is
definitely one of the best films I have seen in a while. A heart
felt true life story that awakens your eyes and heart to the
struggles of racism and physical impairment in our society. A
must see film for the good at heart.
