Laurie got an email the other day from reader Barry Y. I thought

Barry writes:

Thank you Barry! This is what makes the countless hours Laurie

3. IN THE NEWS - Movies & Entertainment
=======================================================

APES ACCIDENT
Word has come of a fatality on the Los Angeles Center Studios set
of the Planet of the Apes production. On October 30th, a scenic
artist named Paul Trachtenberg fell to his death while working on
a floor-to-ceiling backdrop for the set. Cal/OSHA is now
investigating the death.

MIKE MYERS GETS GONGED
Mike Myers is in talks to star in Confessions of a Dangerous
Mind, a fictionalized account of the secret life of Gong Show
host Chuck Barris. Being John Malkovich scribe Charlie Kaufman
will pen the script, based on Barris's 1984 book Confessions of a
Dangerous Mind: An Unauthorized Autobiography. Bryan Singer (The
Usual Suspects, X-Men) may direct.

MEXICAN DUO GASLIGHT ROBERTS
Julia Roberts has inked a deal to star in an as-yet-untitled
psychological thriller that reunites her with Gore Verbinski and
J.H. Wyman, the team behind her upcoming film, The Mexican. The
project is in the vein of George Cukor's 1944 classic Gaslight.

MATT AND BEN STRIKE BACK
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are negotiating to appear in Kevin
Smith's latest project, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the
fourth and final chapter of the filmmaker's New Jersey anthology
that includes Clerks, Chasing Amy and Mallrats. The film is
slated for an Aug. 10, 2001 release date. Affleck and Damon
appeared in Smith's religious satire Dogma.

PIXAR HEADS UNDERWATER
Pixar Animation Studios, the company behind Toy Story and A Bug's
Life, has begun production on Finding Nemo, its fifth
computer-animated film with Walt Disney Pictures. Described as
"an underwater adventure about a father who must find his
kidnapped son," Nemo is slated for a summer 2003 release. The
company is also producing Monsters, Inc., which will land in
theaters Thanksgiving 2001.

LOPEZ HAS ENOUGH
Jennifer Lopez will star in the thriller Enough, described as
Sleeping with the Enemy meets Double Jeopardy. Lopez will play a
woman who discovers her husband is evil. Sandra Bullock was
originally attached to star.

SLAP HER, SHE'S FRENCH
John Horn High School in Mesquite, Texas is the site of shooting
on a new Kirsten Dunst comedy which just began production there.
'Slap Her, She's French' has filming taking place in the parking
lot and will be done inside the school during the Christmas break
with Tiffani Thiessen, Joshua Jackson and Maria Bello are rumored
to also star in supporting roles.

BALTIC STORM
Finnish news sources have reported that Jutta Rabe is set to
produce this 'based on a true story' sea adventure starring
Martin Sheen & Julia Ormond. Written by Rabe and Henning Witte,
the film follows the sinking of the MS Estonia during its voyage
from Estonia to Stockholm in September 1994 - unlike Titanic
though this baby went under fast and the trip itself is only
about a day or so long. This isn't a love story as it seems the
sinking was deliberate to cover-up a secret pact of underground
transportation between countries - well that's one of the
theories, apparently its like the JFK assassination with several
possibilities. Ormond will play the woman desperately trying to
uncover the truth. Shooting stars in Germany, Denmark, and Malta
in February.

SIMMONS AND SPIDEY
Rumors have been flying for days that suggest that character
actor J. K. Simmons (Oz) is a strong contender for the role of
Spider-Man's nemesis, J. Jonah Jameson. Now, an unnamed source at
Marvel is confirming that the actor has auditioned for director
Sam Raimi. The source is quoted as saying that Simmons is
"definitely in the running and would be a great, great choice if
we went with him," adding that the actor had "a great, great
audition."

CRONENBERG AND INSTINCT 2
David Cronenberg is close to signing on to direct the Basic
Instinct 2 project. The film, which will bring back Sharon Stone
in the role she played for the original, is planned to ramp up in
mid-February. MGM will release the film in the U.S.

OUTLAW FLICK
Fine Line Features has snagged the feature films rights to
Outlaw, the comic series that has run in the UK's 2000 A.D. comic
magazine. The potential film will have a budget in the $10-15M
range with plans to start production in early 2001. Andrew Upton
will direct with a script by Lloyd Foneville. The original series
told the story of a criminal who is captured by weapons design
company. He then becomes the subject of an experiment that
results in his being turned into the ultimate cyborg fighting
machine.

IMAX PASSES UP SHREK
The Imax Corp. has decided not to release DreamWorks' Shrek
project in 3-D to their theaters. The decision was made due to
increased costs related to creative changes that had been made by
DreamWorks. Imax big shot Brad Wechsler revealed, "DreamWorks
wanted to change some of the film. There were new creative
costs." DreamWorks spokesperson Vivian Mayer spoke on the matter,
saying, "Discussions with Imax have ended, and we are discussing
other options."

SIZEMORE TO BLACK HAWK
Tom Sizemore is in talks to star in Ridley Scott's Black Hawk
Down project. The film will tell the true life story of a mission
by U.S. soldiers into Somalia that encounters unexpected armed
resistance resulting in many fatalities. Plans are to start
shooting the film on February 23rd. The one barrier in the way of
Sizemore's participation is DreamWorks' Road to Perdition, which
is scheduled to start shooting in early 2001. The actor's reps
are trying to work out a schedule that will allow Sizemore to be
in both productions. Should he sign on to the project, Sizemore
will take on the role of Lt. McKnight, a grizzled military
veteran who leads the troops into Somalia. Eric Bana (Chopper)
has signed on to play a highly trained member of Delta Force.
Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor) has also signed on board.

CANTON TAKES TROY
The Canton Co. teamed with Germany's Senator have made a
preemptive purchase deal for a project called Troy written by
Michael Tabb. The potential film will tell an epic romance story
set during the Trojan War. Mark Canton will produce the potential
film with J.R. Shearman. Tabb has also been working on the script
for The 7th Portal, based on the Stan Lee Media online animated
series, with the Canton Co.

DISNEY AND MINUTE MAN
The Walt Disney Co. has snagged a time travel comedy project to
be called Minute Men. The script and concept by David Diamond and
David Weissman (Family Man, Guam Goes to the Moon, Evolution) is
described as being in the vein of Ghostbusters and Bill and Ted's
Excellent Adventure. The eventual film will tell the story of
three brainy geeks who create a time machine that allows them to
go back in time 10 minutes. They form a company called Minute Men
in an attempt to make money while using their invention to help
people. Andrew Gunn (Country Bears) will produce.

MARIO AND ALI
Mario Van Peebles is the most recent addition to the cast of
Michael Mann's Ali biopic project. Van Peebles will take on the
role of Malcolm X in the film.

CLAY AND COLOSSEUM
Clay Enters 'Colosseum'
Potential series, Colosseum, starring Andrew Dice Clay will
feature Clay as a modern day fight promoter from Chicago who
finds himself thrown into ancient Rome. Clay's character soon
manages to get a gig booking spectacles in the Colosseum.
Pearson Television is shooting a presentation reel for the
potential program this week in Vancouver. The reel will be
screened at the National Association of Television Programming
Executives' annual syndication sales conference in Las Vegas on
January 22-25. Pearson hopes to launch the regular series for
fall 2001. The same production company had been developing a
Spartacus TV series concept, which is still in the works.

FAMILY MAN CHANGES
Universal has shifted the release of the Nicolas Cage starring
romantic comedy fantasy Family Man back one week. The film was
previously scheduled to hit screens on December 15th, which would
have placed it up against Disney's The Emperor's New Groove,
Fox's Dude, Where's My Car? and Paramount's What Women Want
starring Mel Gibson. The lattermost of that lot is also a
romantic comedy fantasy, which Universal is likely to have chosen
to avoid. Family Man's new release date of December 22nd now
places the film up against Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis' Cast
Away, Wes Craven Presents Dracula 2000, Kevin Costner's Cuban
missile crisis drama Thirteen Days and Sandra Bullock's
action-comedy Miss Congeniality.

1 HOUR CASTING
Erin Daniels (House of 1000 Corpses) is the latest addition to
the cast of Fox Searchlight's psychological thriller One Hour
Photo. No report on what part Daniels will play in the film,
which is now scheduled to start shooting next week in L.A.

*****DVD NEWS*****
[Note from Laurie]
This week I had my usual DVD marketing meeting and got to see a
ton of advanced copies and info for upcoming DVD releases. This
meeting was for Warner and Fox releases. Universal, MGM/United
Artists, and Disney are this next week.

X-Men Special Edition - The X-Men DVD will hit stores on November
21st, but Fox has given the go ahead for another extended version
special edition DVD to be released sometime in December or early
January. The new version is even sweeter than the one coming on
the 21st. The extended version will feature two scenes added in
to the film that have yet-to-be-filmed, almost 3 hours of
behind-the-scenes footage, more commentaries by actors, and
dozens of outtakes from the filming and audition reels. Fox
wouldn't confirm a street date for the SE version, but if they
keep everything I saw, it'll be awesome.

Seven Platinum Series - Warner has revamped Brad Pitt's Seven
mainly to get the current 'flipper' version off the market. The
new version is a two disc set with 6.1 DTS EX sound and a ton of
features including: 3 different commentaries (none with actors),
several deleted scenes, extended takes, 3 alternate endings,
photo galleries, and storyboards. The new version of this film
is spectacular. The deleted scenes and alternate endings give a
whole new look at the film. The release date is December 19,
2000.

When Harry Met Sally - Warner has finally decided to put this one
to DVD and they are pulling out all the stops in the process.
The new version has 11 minutes of extra scenes that are too
precious and should have been in the original film. The DVD also
features the Harry Connick, Jr. music video, commentary with Rob
Reiner, and a documentary with actors and crew. The release date
is set for January 9, 2001.

J.R. EWING SHOOTS BACK
Larry Hagman is writing a tell-all book that will delve into his
Dallas days, an experimentation with the drug LSD, and his recent
liver transplant. Simon & Schuster reportedly will pay the actor
low-six-figures to write Hello, Darlin': Tall (and Absolutely
True) Tales About My Life. Coinciding with the book's
publication, Hagman will hit the road for a travelling stage show
based on his life.

MADONNA CONCERT ON WEB
Can't get tickets for Madonna's just-announced concert at
London's Brixton Academy on Nov. 28? Well, you're in luck: The
gig will be broadcast live on the Internet. The webcast could
break the record for the largest Internet audience - a title
currently held by Paul McCartney. The ex-Beatle's webcast of a
Liverpool concert last year attracted three million people.

IT'S OFFICIAL
Country superstar Garth Brooks has filed for divorce from his
wife, Sandy, citing irreconcilable differences.

BIG TIME BACK PAY
A U.S. District Court Judge has ordered Frasier star Kelsey
Grammer to pay $2 million to his ex-talent agent in a dispute
over commissions.

FORD SPLITS WITH WIFE
Harrison Ford and wife Melissa Mathison have split after 17 years
of marriage. "We have been living apart for the past month," the
couple said in a joint statement. "We sincerely hope that we can
work out our differences." Ford was recently photographed
drinking champagne at a New York City club with The Practice
actress Lara Flynn Boyle, fueling speculation that they were
romantically involved. "It had nothing to do with that," Ford's
rep told the press. "They separated before that."

JOEL AND JOHN REUNITE
Billy Joel is coming out of "retirement" to reunite with Elton
John for a new concert tour. Joel - who two years ago announced
that his touring days were over - will embark on a cross-country
tour with John in February. A rep for Joel would only confirm
that a tour is in "the discussion stage."

ANOTHER BOOK
Britney Spears - who along with her mom, Lynne Spears, wrote the
successful paperback Britney Spears' Heart to Heart - is pitching
a work of fiction also co-written by her mother. The book is
described as a Mother's Day parable, and is expected to be
published in May.

SPLITSVILLE FOR WINONA, BECK
Winona Ryder's hush-hush relationship with rocker Beck has
reportedly come to an end. The couple - who never publicly
admitted they were an item - decided they made better friends
than lovers.

POSSIBLE REUNION
In a recent interview with The Practice's Lara Flynn Boyle, she
hinted at a reunion with ex-squeeze Jack Nicholson. Recent rumors
were that she and recently single Harrison Ford were an item.

AFI SALUTES BABS
Barbra Streisand will be the first female director to receive the
American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award at the annual
awards ceremony Feb. 22. "Barbra Streisand is a living legend who
epitomizes the essence of American film," AFI board chairman
Howard Stringer said. "She is a pioneer in everything she does."

SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER OVER
The Broadway musical Saturday Night Fever will close on Dec. 30
after 500 performances. The show - which received mostly negative
reviews when it opened on Oct. 21, 1999 - is the victim of
declining ticket sales.

MADONNA MAKES HER MOVE
Madonna has paid $9.9 million for a four-story Georgian house in
the London suburb of Notting Hill. The news comes on the heels of
the announcement that the superstar - whose beau, Guy Ritchie,
hails from England - will perform a special concert at London's
Brixton Academy on Nov. 28.

IN THE NEWS - Television
====================================

WB'S GIRLS ARE THE BEST
The WB's new Thursday night drama Gilmore Girls was named Best
New Drama by Viewers for Quality Television. The Virginia-based
advocacy group also bestowed on the show awards for Most
Interesting New Character (Lauren Graham's Lorelai Gilmore), Best
Actress in a New Series (Graham) and Best Written New Series.
Other winners include Fox's Dark Angel (Biggest Surprise) and
Gideon's Crossing star Andre Braugher (Best Actor in a New
Series). The recently cancelled NBC newspaper drama Deadline was
singled out as the season's Biggest Disappointment. And for the
second consecutive year, no best new comedy was chosen. VQT
members felt that "there was nothing worth mentioning."

SPIKE FLEE
Spike Feresten, one of the executive producers/co-creators of
NBC's troubled Michael Richards Show, has escaped the sinking
ship thanks to reported creative differences. Feresten, a former
Seinfeld writer, was one of four co-creators on the show. After a
strong start, Richards saw its ratings slip in its second outing
last week.

MORE ORDER
A third Law & Order series is coming to NBC next season. The
network has committed to 13 episodes of Law & Order: Criminal
Intent, which will break from the traditional L&O format to
reveal the point of view of the criminal, as well as the police
and prosecutors.

ED, TITANS ON THE MOVE
NBC is moving its acclaimed romantic drama Ed from Sunday to
Wednesday at 8 p.m./ET - the timeslot currently occupied by
Titans - beginning Dec. 6. In turn, Aaron Spelling's struggling
soap will shift to Mondays at 8 p.m./ET effective Dec. 4. "[Ed]
is a show that fits perfectly with The West Wing and Law & Order
and will provide viewers with one of the best nights of
television, start-to-finish, on any network in recent memory,"
boasts Garth Ancier, President of NBC Entertainment, adding that
Titans' move to Mondays will allow the show to better reach its
target audience. "Young women watch television on Monday more
than any other night of the week."

DR. LAURA ALMOST OVER
Dr. Laura - the struggling syndicated talk show hosted by Dr.
Laura Schlessinger - has been banished to 2 a.m. timeslots in
seven of the nation's biggest markets, including New York, Los
Angeles and Chicago. Insiders predict that the downgrades signal
the beginning of the end for the controversial yakker.

ELECTION CLIFFHANGER IS A JOKE
The hosts of late night TV are having a field day with the
too-close-to-call presidential contest between George W. Bush and
Al Gore. "The outcome of the election still has not been
determined, and now apparently it all comes down to how the
Floridians voted," Conan O'Brien said on NBC's Late Night. "After
hearing this, George W. Bush said 'Please, let's not bring
foreigners into this."' Over at CBS's Late Show, David Letterman
joked, "So here's the deal: We have George W. Bush, not the
president of the United States; Al Gore, not president of the
United States - whaddaya say we just leave it that way?" Not to
be outdone, Bill Maher of ABC's Politically Incorrect cracked,
"Both candidates are feeling the pressure. Al Gore has been testy
with his staff, and late today, George W. Bush broke down and
yelled at his parents, 'You promised!'" The Tonight Show's Jay
Leno got in on the cliffhanger frenzy as well. "I'm not saying
Bush is getting confident he is going to win," the comic said,
"but today, he spent all day trying to pronounce 'inaugural.'"

ANNE FRANK
Apparently Steven Spielberg has pulled out of the TV movie
biographical film about the life of Holocaust heroine Anne Frank.
Seems that Frank's last surviving relative Buddy Elias was upset
the film was not based on an authorized account of Frank's life
and asked Spielberg to withdraw from the project - he did. A
proper theatrical version based on the authorized diaries of the
young girl is taking place currently over at 20th Century FOX.

MORE LINES
ABC has renewed its improv series Whose Line Is It Anyway?
through the 2003-2004 season.

POLITICAL DRAMA
John Wells - producer of ER and The West Wing - is developing a
drama series for CBS about a recently defeated U.S. senator who
returns home to live near his three grown daughters.
