STILLER, BARRYMORE TO GET DUPLEX
Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore have been cast in the comedy The
Duplex. The Miramax film is about a young Gotham couple who get a
chance to move into a gorgeous duplex in a perfect Manhattan
neighborhood. They just have to kill the cute little old lady who
currently resides there.
DISNEY NABS SNL DUO
Saturday Night Live writer Matt Piedmont and star Will Ferrell
have sold an action-comedy pitch to the Walt Disney Co. The
"Untitled Will Ferrell Project" features the comedian as a
hard-nosed cop in the '70s who lands in a coma after being gunned
down by a pimp. He wakes up in the present day to hunt down his
attacker - only to discover that the one-time pimp is now the
largest crime boss in Los Angeles.
INSTANT REPLAY
Julia Roberts is in talks to star opposite Sexiest Man Alive Brad
Pitt in Replay. The project would mark a reunion for the duo, who
teamed up for DreamWorks' upcoming film The Mexican. Replay
revolves around a 43-year-old man (Pitt) who, after dying of a
heart attack, wakes up as himself in college and is given a
second chance to correct mistakes - one of which is reclaiming
his lost love (Roberts). Of course, there's one catch: He keeps
dying on the same date and coming back to start from scratch.
CASTING FOR PIE 2
Universal Pictures is holding an online casting call for two
featured extras for American Pie 2. The deadline to apply is this
Wednesday.
RYAN LINKED TO NEW AUSSIE
Meg Ryan apparently can't get enough of Australians. The
actress - who fell for Gladiator star Russell Crowe while filming
the upcoming Proof of Life - has been cast opposite X-Men hunk
Hugh Jackman in the time-travel romantic comedy Kate & Leopold.
Ryan plays a modern-day New York City woman who falls for a 19th
century duke (Jackman).
BORDERS DISPUTE
Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient) has replaced Kevin Costner in
director Oliver Stone's latest film, Beyond Borders. Scheduling
conflicts forced Costner to back out of the pic, which follows a
10-year romance between a relief worker and a socialite (Angelina
Jolie).
DRACULA 2000
Despite recent rumors of a straight-to-video release, "Dracula
2000" is indeed going for its theatrical release as planned -
"the film is on track for a December 22 release in theaters
throughout the US. Trailers for the film have already begun
showing in theaters - and, as a matter of fact, they have been
testing through the roof".
SCOOBY-DOO AND FREDDIE TOO
Real-life couple Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar
might appear together on-screen in none other than the
live-action version of the "Scooby Doo" cartoon. Both have
received separate offers to appear as that most clean-cut of
couples - Fred and Daphne. Roja Gosnell directs the project
scheduled to begin shooting in Australia next year.
COLUMBIA/TRISTAR SCHEDULE
The Heath Ledger action flick "A Knight's Tale" has undergone a
name change to "In Shining Armor" with a release date of June 1st
just being scheduled. Sony has also locked in dates for some of
its other flicks next year including the Jason Biggs comedy
"Saving Silverman" (February 16th), the David Spade comedy "The
Adventures of Joe Dirt" (April 6th), and the Matthew
McConaughey/Jennifer Lopez comedy "The Wedding Planner" (January
26th). Other titles like "The Tailor of Panama" still aren't
locked in, whilst "The Forsaken" and "Ghosts of Mars" have only
'Spring' and 'Summer' tags respectively at the moment.
BOND 20
Actress Michelle Yeoh told Hong Kong's Apple Daily that Pierce
Brosnan is very keen to get her back for the next Bond film. This
is more than a simple wish though, her agent is apparently
already conducting negotiations with EON about such an
arrangement.
DIE HARD 4
Bruce Willis action fans better hope this baby goes ahead as
it'll be the last time we'll see him go the adrenaline-kicking
route. Doing a feature interview with UK cable TV Sky Mag, Willis
confirmed he no longer is interested in making anymore 'trigger
happy blockbusters', saying "I felt I was doing the same thing
over and over again, so I've decided not to do anymore action
movies. There are eight other guys who can save the world just as
well as I can". Nevertheless he confirmed the long awaited fourth
"Die Hard" adventure is on the way but it will be less violent,
have more of a "human dimension and focus on emotion", and no
coarse language.
MORE WILLIS
Bruce Willis has signed a three picture deal with Revolution
Studios, the first project of which will be an action thriller
called Man of War. The film, which had been in development at
Universal for three years, will have Willis taking on the role of
the leader of a crack special military operations force that is
given the mission to head into an African jungle on a search and
rescue mission. Willis' partner, Arnold Rifkin, will produce the
eventual film, which is expected to ramp up in the second half of
2001.
BON JOVI AND VAMPIRES
Jon Bon Jovi has signed on to the lead role in the upcoming
Vampires: Los Muertos project, which is a sequel to John
Carpenter's Vampires. The film, which will be directed by Tommy
Lee Wallace from his own script, will start production in early
2001 on location in Mexico. There's no specific word on the role
that Bon Jovi will play in the film.
DUSHKA IN SEA
Eliza Dushka, Faith on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is in talks to
join Robert De Niro in Franchise Pictures' City by the Sea
project. The film, which will also star James Franco, will tell
the true story of a cop (De Niro) who while investigating a
murder learns that the killer may be his own son (Franco). Should
Dushku sign on board, she will take on the role of Franco's
girlfriend and mother of his child, who is struggling to stay
sober. The film, which will be directed by Michael Caton-Jones
with a script by Ken Hixon, starts shooting later this month in
New York.
BOOREM JOINS ATLANTIS
Mika Boorem (Ally McBeal) has joined the cast of Castle Rock
Entertainment's Hearts in Atlantis project. There's no specific
word on what part Boorem will play in the coming film, which will
star Anthony Hopkins.
K-PAX
Alfre Woodard has joined the cast of Universal's K-Pax. Woodard
will play Jeff Bridges' psychiatrist boss in the film which tells
the story of a patient (played by Kevin Spacey) who claims to be
from another planet called "K-Pax." When his actions start to
have remarkable positive effects on the other patients, his
doctor (Jeff Bridges) begins to wonder more about the man's
claims.
JONES AND HUNTED
Tommy Lee Jones is likely to sign on to star in William
Friedkin's The Hunted project. Jones is in talks to take on the
part of a top FBI serial killer tracker who is seeking out a
trained assassin killing people like it's a sport, whose sole
reason for committing the crimes is to become the subject of a
manhunt. The film will have a script by David and Peter Griffiths
(both of Collateral Damage) with Ricardo Mestres, Tom Rosenberg
and Gary Lucchesi producing. Friedkin has also been developing a
project called Shooter as a starring vehicle for Jones, which
features the same FBI character. That film could still come about
once its script is finished. Plans are to start shooting the film
in February.

COLE OFFERS HOUSTON HELP
Natalie Cole, who once struggled with a drug problem, fears that
Whitney Houston may be headed down a similar path, and is
reaching out to the troubled pop diva. "I think she is isolated,
and it's going to take a small miracle to be able to cut through
some of this stuff," Cole recently said. "I guess [that is] kind
of protecting her with good intentions, but she needs to be
saved. The only thing I always say to Whitney is, 'Call me. You
know my number.'"
CONGRATS
Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith welcomed the birth of
their second child, daughter Willow Camille Reign Smith, on
Halloween. The baby was born in Los Angeles and weighed 6 lbs.,
10 oz. The couple have a two-year-old son, Jaden Christopher Syre
Smith.
PITT'S STILL GOT IT
Married life apparently has not dampened Brad Pitt's sex appeal.
The 36-year-old actor - who wed Friends star Jennifer Aniston in
August - has been named People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive
again. He's the first person to be honored with that title twice.
(He hasn't been this sexy since 1995.) Last year's winner was
Richard Gere. The Nov. 13 issue also recognizes 16 other sexy
men, including 72-year-old Survivor Rudy Boesch.
MRS. PITT
Jennifer Aniston has officially changed her name to Jennifer
Joanne Pitt. The Friends Emmy nominee was spotted at the Santa
Monica Department of Motor Vehicle's office last week, where a
clerk reportedly spilled the beans that "that Friends girl was
changing her name." The actress's rep, however, says that Aniston
will continue to use her maiden name for on-screen credits.
SPEARS AWARDS
Britney Spears will host the American Music Awards live from Los
Angeles's Shrine Auditorium on January 8.
RECOVERING
Actress/model Lauren Hutton remains in serious but stable
condition at a Las Vegas hospital one week after her motorcycle
swerved off a Nevada highway.
SPLIT UP
The three-member piano-based pop band Ben Folds Five has split
up.

IN THE NEWS - Television
====================================
KATHIE LEE BANNED FROM REGIS
Kathie Lee Gifford, who is currently pushing her new CD, Heart of
a Woman, has been forbidden from appearing or running commercial
spots on the newly christened Live with Regis. "We need to gain
some physical and commercial separation from Kathie Lee during
the search for her replacement," says Tom Kane, president of New
York's WABC-TV, which produces the show. "We can all see a day
when she'll appear on the show again as a guest and when her
commercial endeavors are promoted during the show, but only after
we've been able to reestablish ourselves with a new co-host." The
Kathie Lee ban comes a week after Gifford appeared on NBC's
Today - in direct competition with her former show. When asked by
Matt Lauer if she had any plans to drop into Live to promote her
CD, she replied, "I'd love to, but I think they got a little
angry when we booked the Today show so soon." But in an
appearance on last night's Late Show with David Letterman, the
tabloid magnet said she hasn't been on Live because she doesn't
want her songs edited.
THE WB WANTS MORE
Popular creator Ryan Murphy has received a pilot commitment from
the WB for an hour-long series described as a male Charlie's
Angels. The prospective series, titled More, will revolve around
a trio of "hip men" who fulfill the fantasies of women.
ORDER UP
ABC has ordered another six episodes of its Andre Braugher
medical drama Gideon's Crossing.
MORE ORDERS
ABC's comedy The Geena Davis Show and Fox's dramas Dark Angel and
Boston Public have been picked up by their respective networks
for the remainder of the season.
ANOTHER ORDER
The WB has picked up its new comedy Nikki for the remainder of
the season.
ELVIS SIGHTING
Rockers Elvis Costello and T-Bone Burnett are joining forces to
create an hour-long comedy-drama series for the WB Network about
four models who form a band.
NBC CANCELS DEADLINE
Deadline, the newspaper drama from Law & Order producer Dick
Wolf, has been cancelled after five episodes. The move came after
the series starring Oliver Platt as a tabloid columnist finished
fourth in its timeslot Monday night. Deadline is the second
casualty of the new fall season. Last week, NBC cancelled its
Malcolm in the Middle rip-off Tucker.
FELICITY LAUNCHES GROUNDBREAKING STORY
In what may be a first for television, a major character on the
WB drama Felicity will be diagnosed with testicular cancer. The
storyline kicked off last week when affable filmmaker Sean (Greg
Grunberg) undergoes an ultrasound which reveals a growth. "It
just struck me as a realistic and timely story," executive
producer J.J. Abrams said, adding that the plot will not be a
downer. "We've found a way to tell the story where it doesn't
feel like an afterschool special." The health scare will test
Sean's blossoming romance with Meghan (Amanda Foreman). "Their
response to this is very unique," says Abrams. "One of the things
that results from this is that Sean starts to explore his
Judaism. Combine that with the fact that Meghan is Wiccan, and
you get some really funny moments."
FYI
The third season of HBO's mob hit The Sopranos begins on March 4.
OPRAH NOT TALKED OUT
Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has signed a new two-year contract
with King World Productions that will keep The Oprah Winfrey Show
on the air through the 2003-04 TV season. Unlike previous years,
the new pact was signed with very little fanfare. "I am finally
at a point in my life where I'm doing the kind of shows I've
always wanted to do," Winfrey said, "helping people to see
themselves more clearly and to make choices that lead to more
fulfilled lives."
TIFFANI NETWORK
Former Beverly Hills, 90210 star Tiffani Thiessen has signed a
deal to star in an ABC comedy pilot tentatively titled Something
About Tiffani. The Ladies Man actress will play a beer-guzzling,
tart-tongued woman who ditches her fiancée at the altar and heads
off to Italy for a six-month break. She returns home 70 pounds
lighter - to the shock of her three male college pals. "They're
expecting the old Tiffani, and this hot babe walks in," helmer
Mark Blutman tells the trade paper. "Inside, she's still one of
the guys: She's salty, she's ballsy. But she's not used to being
this hot lady and having all these men attracted to her." The
show could air as early as next fall.
ALLY STILL CASTING
Yet another film star is making tracks to Fox's resurgent Ally
McBeal. Taye Diggs (How Stella Got Her Groove Back) will appear
in six episodes beginning in February as a possible love interest
for Lisa Nicole Carson. "I heard he was a fan of the show, so I
invited him down to the set. He had a blast," Ally producer
Pamela Wisne told reporters. "Fortunately, it was a day we were
filming bar scenes, which are very fun days." In addition to
Diggs, Robert Downey Jr. has begun a 10-episode Ally stint and
Anne Heche kicks off a three-episode arc in January.

family in Chicago. Instead, he finds himself rerouted from New
York's La Guardia Airport to Wichita, Kansas. With no other
options, Neal decides to share a room in a fleabag hotel with Del
Griffith (John Candy), a shower-curtain-ring salesman and fellow
stranded traveler. Although Neal finds Del to be a buffoon, he
just can't seem to get away from him. To make matters worse, all
their efforts to get back to Chicago fail as trains break down
and rental cars catch on fire. Along the way they encounter crazy
cabbies, redneck truck drivers, and oversexed bus passengers.
