STALLONE IN 'AVENGING ANGELO'
Sylvester Stallone has signed on to star in a black comedy called
Avenging Angelo. Martin Burke is in talks to direct the Franchise
Pictures project. The film, which will have a script by Will
Aldis and Steve Mackall, will tell the story of a woman who
learns that she is the daughter of a Mafioso. When her father is
killed, she is obligated by the rules of the family to avenge his
death. Her father's bodyguard (to be played by Stallone) aids her
in her quest, with the two falling in love and complicating the
situation. As yet, there is no set production start date for the
film.

MYERS IN THE PINK
Mike Myers has received a $20 million offer from MGM to reprise
the Peter Sellers role of Inspector Clouseau in a remake of The
Pink Panther. The Austin Powers star already is in negotiations
to star with Helen Hunt and Anne Heche in the comedy Timepiece,
and may decide to squeeze in both projects before the seemingly
inevitable actor/writer strikes next summer.

RIPLEY'S BACK
John Malkovich and Dougray Scott (Mission: Impossible 2) are this
close to inking a deal to star in Ripley's Game, based on the
third novel in Patricia Hightsmith's Ripley series. Last year's
The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow,
was adapted from her first book. Ripley's Game, set a couple of
decades later, finds its title character now married and in need
of an assassin to kill two rivals.

NIGHTMARE GROSS FOR WITCH 2
The Blair Witch phenomenon is officially dead. Book of Shadows:
Blair Witch 2, the much-maligned follow-up to last year's indie
success story The Blair Witch Project, was beaten at the box
office over the weekend by the seemingly-unstoppable Meet the
Parents. The Robert De Niro comedy spent its fourth consecutive
week at No. 1, grossing another $15.1 million. (It's 24-day total
stands at $100 million.) Witch 2, meanwhile, opened at No. 2,
grossing a paltry $13.1 million. (By contrast, the original
earned $29 million during its debut weekend.) Despite the
disappointing haul, a spokesperson for Artisan Entertainment says
that plans are still underway for a Blair Witch 3 - dubbed as a
prequel to the original. Two newcomers, the kiddie flick The
Little Vampire and the John Travolta dark comedy Lucky Numbers,
failed to cast a spell on moviegoers either. Vampire, starring
Jonathan Lipnicki, opened at No. 6 with $5.5 million, just ahead
of Numbers, which brought in $4.6 million. Rounding out the top
five: Remember the Titans at No. 3 ($8.0 million), Bedazzled at
No. 4 ($7.7 million) and Pay it Forward at No. 5 ($6.9 million).

SWEET
Christina Applegate will appear opposite Cameron Diaz in the
comedy The Sweetest Thing.

HESTON AND MORE APES
Seems that Charlton Heston has agreed to appear in Tim Burton's
upcoming remake of "Planet of the Apes".

CLOONEYGATE
George Clooney is believed to be up for the role of Persian king
Xerxes in the film adaptation of Steven Pressfield's "Gates of
Fire" novel. Michael Mann is expected to helm the flick about the
Ancient Spartan/Persian battle at Thermopylae once work on "Ali"
is complete.

MATRIX 2 CASTING
One of the members of 80's bottle-blond boy band 'Bros' has
apparently scored a role in "The Matrix" sequels. No word yet on
which part he'll play.

PUMPKIN
Even though she's hard at work on "Prozac Nation", Christina
Ricci still has the time to participate in another project.
Trucks and film crews were spotted around the various frat houses
of the University of Southern California last week shooting the
film entitled "Pumpkin" which follows "a young sorority woman
becomes uncharacteristically drawn to a disabled man". MGM will
be distributing the film next year.

ZOMBIE FLICK
'Revelation' is the new title for the upcoming remake of 'I
Walked with a Zombie'. Craig Sheffer, Jennifer Grey and Tim Curry
star in the flick which recently screened some test footage in
London last week and at the MIFED conference in Milan this week.

OPEN CALL FOR ALI
Big crowds are expected at an open casting call for the Muhammed
Ali biopic in about two weeks. Sony asks LA residents who want to
participate to head to Stage 15 of their Culver City studios
(9336 West Washington Blvd., enter via Gate No. 2 on Ince Blvd.)
on Saturday November 11th from 10am-5pm. Thousands of extra roles
are up for grabs, but in order to try for it applicants must wear
period specific clothing (1962 - 1974) and bring a recent
nonreturnable photo of themselves. The filmmakers are after adult
males of all ethnicity with preferences for: Off-duty law
enforcement officials; Boxers, trainers, cornermen, referees and
other persons from the world of boxing; men of all races with a
military background, and older white males with a press
background.

SPIDER, NO RELATION TO SPIDERMAN
Ralph Fiennes is set to team up with Miranda Richardson for a new
psychological thriller from the UK created by "The Fly" man
himself David Cronenberg. Based on the novel by Patrick McGrath,
Fiennes would play the lead role of a mental patient prematurely
released from an asylum who tries to settle down and re-create
himself in East London. Shooting begins very soon in the English
capital.

ANGEL'S WINGS
WWF star Stephanie McMahon is following that latest of trends -
wrestlers turned film stars. "On Angels Wings" is the latest
script from "Cold Hearts" writer/director Robert A. Masciantonio
and follows a man whose son is killed in a drive-by shooting - a
tragedy so devastating it unhinges the guy who decides to deliver
his own brand of justice in the costume guise of an angel.
McMahon is apparently Masciantonio's personal choice for
'Amanda', a hardened ex-classical dancer turned bartender whose
the "love interest and voice of sanity" for the lead character.
Kevin Smith film regular Jason Lee is tipped to be offered the
role of the killer, while Christopher Wiehl ("Cold Hearts",
"Bull") is up for the lead when shooting begins in Philadelphia
in early 2001.

CHAN SEQUEL
Jackie Chan was on "Starz Movie News" the other day and briefly
mentioned "Rush Hour 2", but also dropped word that the "Shanghai
Noon" sequel will be entitled "Shanghai Knight" and is set to go
into production next April.

EYE SEE VIDEO
Looks like any mention of Sylvester Stallone's thriller "Eye See
You" has disappeared from Universal Pictures' official site -
thus its likely the film will go direct to video or cable.

POTTER CASTING
Word has it that the role of Quidditch team captain Oliver Wood
has been filled in the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
movie. Young actor Sean Biggerstaff has been tapped to play the
role. While talking to reporters about the project, Biggerstaff
is quoted as saying, "I can hardly believe how fast things have
moved and that I'm involved in the Harry Potter movie. I feel so
privileged to work with so many big stars." The paper also
reports that it was Alan Rickman, who worked with Biggerstaff in
The Winter Guest, who suggested the actor for the role.

TIMELINE FAST TRACKED
The Timeline movie project, based on Michael Crichton's time
travel novel, has been placed on the fast track at Paramount. The
studio's execs chose to do so after seeing a new draft of the
script that had been written by George Nolfi (Pathfinder). Though
a budget is not set on the ambitious project, odds are that the
pic will clock in at $80M. Based on the book of the same name,
Timeline tells the story of three students to who travel back
through time to 14th century France in hopes of saving their
professor who is trapped there.

POLAR WRITER
Malia Scotch Marmo has been hired to write the script for Castle
Rock's The Polar Express project. Based on Chris Van Allsburg's
book, the film will tell the story of a boy who believes in Santa
Claus in spite of what his friends claim otherwise. He is
rewarded for his belief when a train arrives on Christmas Eve to
take him to the North Pole to meet the big man himself. Tom Hanks
has long been attached to the project and will play the train's
conductor. The project is being developed as a directing vehicle
for Rob Reiner.

DISNEY SEES GHOST
The Walt Disney Co. has snagged a Halloween-themed pitch called
Ghost Patrol, which they are quickly placing into development.
The studio is hoping to release the film for Halloween 2001. The
pitch by writers Jonathan Bernstein, Mark Blackwell and Jim
Greer, who are now writing the script, is being described as
being in the vein of Ghostbusters. In spite of their hopes to
hurry along the project, Disney will not give the project a green
light until they see the film's script. Mike Karz is attached to
produce the eventual film.

TWO RICES TOGETHER
Anne Rice and her son, Christopher Rice, are talking about
teaming up to write a film adaptation together. While making an
appearance in New York Thursday night to promote Merrick, Rice
revealed that she and her son may collaborate on the script for
the film based on her book The Witching Hour. Rice also cautioned
that she is still determining if this is the right project for
the two to work on for their first together.

FOXX AND ALI
Jamie Foxx is in talks to join Michael Mann's Ali biopic. Should
the actor sign on, he'll take on the real-life role of Drew
"Bundini" Brown, the court jester of the Muhammad Ali's
entourage. Production is scheduled to start in January.

WILKINSON AND KNIGHT
Tom Wilkinson (The Full Monty, The Patriot, Shakespeare in Love)
has joined the cast of Martin Lawrence's time travel comedy,
Black Knight. Wilkinson will take on the role of the film's main
heavy, Sir Nolte, who is loyal to an evil king. In the film,
Lawrence plays a down on his luck modern day fast food employee
who finds himself transported through time to medieval England,
where he teams with an ex-knight and a peasant girl to take down
the king. Production starts next month.

STEVE ALLEN DIES AT 78
Steve Allen, the pioneer of late-night television and a
comedian-actor-author who wrote more than 4,000 songs, including
"This May Be the Start of Something Big," has died of an apparent
heart attack. He was 78. He died Monday night at the Encino home
of his son, Bill Allen, relatives said Tuesday. His wife of 46
years, Jayne Meadows, rushed from their nearby home. Besides
starting the "Tonight Show," Allen starred as the King of Swing
in the 1956 movie "The Benny Goodman Story." He appeared in
Broadway shows, on soap operas, wrote newspaper columns and more
than 50 books, commented on wrestling broadcasts, made 40 record
albums and wrote plays and a television series that featured
"guest appearances" by Sigmund Freud, Clarence Darrow and
Aristotle. When an interviewer asked Allen in 1985 how he managed
to do so many creative things, he replied: "I never asked myself
that question. It would be like asking how my hair grows. The
mystery of creativity is just that: It is a mystery, and
particularly mysterious to me about myself."
[Movie Fever would like to extend our condolences to the family
and friend's of Mr. Allen. He will be sadly missed.]

ALL DRESSED UP AND NOWHERE TO GO
Today's annual Halloween Costume Contest was as funny as ever
this morning, with Matt Lauer and Al Roker dressed up as the
tabloid's favorite celebrity couple: Jennifer Lopez and Sean
"Puffy" Combs. As Lopez, Lauer was decked out in the diva's
now-legendary barely-there green Versace number, complete with
fake breasts and her trademark enhanced booty. "I was going to
chicken out three separate times," Lauer admitted. Roker got off
easy wearing Combs's trademark white suit and matching fedora.
Katie Couric, meanwhile, appeared as Lucille Ball and Ann Curry
was Joan of Arc. Regis Philbin and wife, Joy, were dressed up as
a King and Queen on today's Live With Regis and Rosie O'Donnell
was Captain Hook on her show. Presidential hopeful George W. Bush
also got into the holiday spirit Monday night on the Tonight Show
with Jay Leno. Dubya donned a Halloween mask of his Democratic
rival, Al Gore. "This is... scary," he quipped.

DALY NEWS
You can bet teen girls across the country totally didn't request
this: MTVs Carson Daly got engaged over the weekend to his
girlfriend, actress Tara Reid. The couple have not set a wedding
date but plan to marry in Manhattan, where they share an
apartment.

MINNELLI'S DYING WISH
Clutching the hand of her estranged half sister Lorna Luft, Liza
Minnelli was released from a Fort Lauderdale hospital Monday
after a bout with viral encephalitis. "I didn't mind nearly dying
now that it's brought me back with my sister," the 54-year-old
entertainer told reporters. Minnelli and Luft, who hadn't spoken
in six years, reconciled earlier this month when Minnelli fell
ill.

CONGRATS
Jude Law and his actress/wife Sadie Frost became the proud
parents of a baby girl on Wednesday. The couple, who have yet to
name the new arrival, have a son, Rafferty, 4.

SLAIN ACTOR MOURNED
A candlelight vigil was held this week in Los Angeles in honor of
actor Anthony Dwain Lee, who was shot and killed last weekend by
a cop during a Halloween party in Beverly Hills. Responding to a
noise complaint, an officer fired at Lee after the 39-year-old
reportedly pointed what turned out to be a fake gun at him. An
investigation is underway. Lee appeared in the Jim Carrey comedy
Liar, Liar and guest starred on NYPD Blue.

CANCELED SHOWS
MTV News reports that Christina Aguilera canceled several concert
appearances over the weekend after being diagnosed with a viral
syndrome associated with
exudative tonsillitis.

REMEMBER THE TITANS - Denzel Washington, Will Patton
When you mix the two things I love most, football and movies, I'm
bound to like it. Titans is no exception. I absolutely loved
this film and I even got to cry for a few minutes. Titans is
based on a true story of an African American football coach
(Washington) who is thrust into the head coach position in a
1970's Virginia high school that is half-heartedly attempting to
desegregate. The team eventually bonds and has an incredible
season. Denzel's character shows the team and the town that the
school colors are not black and white, but wonderful shades of
forgiveness, acceptance, and brotherhood.

6. CELEBRITY PROFILE
==========
DENZEL WASHINGTON
================================================

Born: December 28, 1954, Mount Vernon, New York USA

Tall, strikingly handsome leading man of films and television in
the 1980s and 1990s, Denzel Washington was born in 1954 in Mount
Vernon, New York. He was the middle child of the 3 children of a
Pentecostal minister father and a beautician mother. After
graduating from high school, Denzel enrolled at Fordham
University intent on a career in journalism. However, he caught
the acting bug while appearing in student drama productions and
upon graduation he moved to San Francisco and enrolled at the
American Conservatory Theater. He left A.C.T. after only 1 year
to seek work as an actor. With his acting versatility and
powerful sexual presence, he had no difficulty finding work in
numerous television productions. In a Newsweek cover story about
the biological basis of the perception of beauty, he was used as
a key example in a scientific explanation why he is considered an
extremely handsome man. He made his first big screen appearance
in Carbon Copy (1981) with George Segal. Through the 1980s he
worked in both movies and television and was chosen for the plum
role of Dr. Chandler in NBC's hit medical series "St. Elsewhere"
(1982), a role that he would play for 6 years. In 1989 he won
the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Tripp,
the runaway slave in Ed Swick's powerful historical masterpiece
Glory (1989). Through the 1990s Denzel co-starred in such big
budget productions as Pelican Brief, The (1993); Crimson Tide
(1995); and Courage Under Fire (1996) - a role for which he was
paid $10 million. To prepare for his role as boxer Rubin Carter
in Hurricane, The (2000), Washington worked out for a year with
L.A. boxing trainer Terry Claybon. Washington has always gotten
along with all his costars and directors with one minor
exception. In a 1995 Premiere magazine article, Denzel confronted
director Quentin Tarantino when he visited the set of Crimson
Tide. Quentin had done an uncredited rewrite of the script.
Denzel lambasted Tarantino about his use of racial slurs in his
films. Tarantino got embarrassed and wanted to move the
conversation to a more private area. Denzel said, "No, if were
going to discuss it, let's discuss it now." Denzel later said he
still felt that Quentin was "a fine artist". Washington lives
quietly in Los Angeles with his wife Pauletta and their 4
children. He made his debut as a director in 1999 with Finding
Fish (2001).
