3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================
PRINZE IN MARTIAL ARTS FLICK
Freddie Prinze Jr. is apparently set to star in a new martial
arts flick for the Weinstein brothers. The movie is based on a
pitch from scribe Robert Mark Kamen ("The Karate Kid"). Prinze
would play a young American man who was raised by monks after his
parents' murder and travels to New York to find those
responsible, along with the chance to meet up with his sole
surviving relative.
SISTER ACT
Susan Sarandon and Goldie Hawn are in talks to play the title
roles in The Banger Sisters, a comedy/drama about two former rock
'n' roll groupies. Hawn would play a "punked-out" waitress proud
of her past, while Sarandon's character - a prominent socialite -
wants to hide hers.
MARCIA MURDER
Former Brady Bunch kid Maureen McCormick (Marcia) has landed a
role in an upcoming direct-to-video murder mystery called Title
to Murder. And that's not all: The actress is also set to display
her sewing skills in an upcoming installment of CBS's The Early
Show.
ROCK ROLLS INTO FILMS
World Wrestling Federation champ the Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson) is
headed to a theater near you. The entertainer will receive $5.5
million to play the title role in The Scorpion King, a spin-off
of The Mummy Returns, the upcoming sequel to the 1999 smash in
which the Rock has a small role as the Scorpion King. The Rock's
hefty salary is believed to be the highest sum ever paid to an
actor for his first starring role. Shooting is expected to begin
in March, after the Rock completes the annual WWF pay-per-view
event, Wrestlemania. WWF owner Vince McMahon will serve as the
film's executive producer.
RESIDENT EVIL HELMER
The "Resident Evil" project has now finally scored a director
after becoming lost in 'development hell' for a long time now
since the departure of George Romero. Paul Anderson ("Soldier",
"Event Horizon") has apparently been contacted to helm the big
screen version of this computer game, one of the most acclaimed
and popular in history.
TOMB RAIDER CASTING
Like daughter, like father. Angelina Jolie's real life father Jon
Voight will be playing her on-screen father too. Voight began a
week-long stint on Monday playing Lord Croft in the film version
of the hit computer game, with shooting at Pinewood Studios
continuing apace. The press release announcing the casting also
included a brief hint about the setting of the end of the movie -
"The huge 007 Stage, the largest sound stage in Europe, is
dominated by the Temple of Ten Thousand Shadows where a fiendish
battle to the death will be fought between the forces of good and
evil".
REIGN HOME
It looks like the home base for Rob Bowman's Reign of Fire
production will be Ardmore Studios in Ireland. The film will tell
the story of a future Mad Max-like earth where the ancient
dragons have returned and taken power. Now, a Brit (Christian
Bale) whose family was killed by a dragon, and an American dragon
fighter team together to take down the leader of the dragon pack.
DIESEL SIGNS
Vin Diesel (Pitch Black) has signed a two-year first look
producing deal with New Line Cinema. The deal involves the actor
starring in and producing an as yet unselected project.
Previously, Diesel signed to star in New Line's actioner, Diablo,
which the studio hopes will spawn a series.
BARBARELLA DEAL
The Barbarella movie took some steps forward with word that
Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox have teamed up to co-finance
and co-produce a feature film as well as hiring John August (Go)
to write the film's script. The film to come will not be a remake
of the '60s cult flick, which starred Jane Fonda in the title
role. In stead, the film will be an adaptation of Barbarella
creator Jean Claude Forest's Le Semble Lune (The Moon Like) and
Le Miroir au Tempetes (The Mirror of Storms), two later graphic
novels in the Barbarella series. The film to come is being
described as cross between science fiction and Woody Allen's sex
comedies of the '70s. Drew Barrymore is attached to take on the
title role as well as act as one of the film's producers with
Laura Ziskin and Nancy Juvonen.
POLLAK AND JONES JOINS DOLITTLE
Kevin Pollak has joined the cast of Dr. Dolittle 2, starring
Eddie Murphy. No word yet on what part the actor will play in the
film. Jeffrey Jones is set to be part of the film's cast also.

FINAL GOODBYE
In front of a sold-out audience at New York's Madison Square
Garden, Barbra Streisand gave the final live performance of her
storied musical career this week. The Brooklyn-born icon belted
out many of her trademark tunes ("Don't Rain on My Parade," "Cry
Me a River," "Evergreen," "The Way We Were," "People") in front
of a celebrity-packed crowd that included Lauren Bacall, Rosie
O'Donnell, Barbara Walters, Jesse Jackson, Billy Crystal, Brooke
Shields, Martha Stewart, Glenn Close, designer Donna Karan,
husband James Brolin and son Jason Gould. After the Funny Girl
performed "Somewhere," the crowd leapt to their feet for a
two-minute standing ovation. Uncomfortable with the attention,
Streisand cued her musical director to jump right into the next
song. However, he urged her to enjoy the moment, and the
teary-eyed diva reluctantly agreed. Babs later took the
opportunity to advertise the sale of her Gotham pad. "Do you know
anyone who's interested in buying a 15-room apartment on Central
Park West?" she asked the crowd, before announcing the name of
the realtor handling the deal. Some in the audience were
disappointed when the second act opened with a video montage of
Streisand's career accompanied by her hit "Putting it Together."
"But she didn't sing the song live," notes fan Tim Blake of
Princeton, NJ. "But it still was amazing."
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE DVD
I got to see the Mission Impossible DVD at work this week. The
DVD is loaded, which is surprising considering it's a Paramount
release. Paramount tends to be reserved on the special features
list, but they are going all out on this disc. The DVD has a
full-length commentary by the director John Woo,
behind-the-scenes, interviews, stunt featurette, Metallica's
music video, the MTV Movie Awards parody with Ben Stiller as Tom
Cruise's stunt man, and an alternate title sequence. The DVD will
be released date is scheduled for November 7.

ABC AND SNOOPY
ABC outbid CBS for broadcast rights to all three Charlie Brown
animated holiday specials: It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,
Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and A Charlie Brown Christmas. CBS has
aired the Peanuts classics for the past 35 years. The new
three-year deal goes into effect next year. "It's a shame that a
few more dollars meant more to them than years of tradition and
loyalty," one CBS exec told reporters.
RICHARD MULLIGAN DIES
Emmy-winning actor Richard Mulligan, best known for his role as
quirky Burt on Soap, died Tuesday in his Los Angeles home after a
long battle with colon cancer. He was 67. Mulligan also starred
in the NBC sitcom Empty Nest, a spin-off of The Golden Girls,
which ran from 1988 to 1995. Although the actor was married five
times, he was single at the time of his death. He is survived by
his son, James, and brothers Robert and James Mulligan.
DAG PUSHED BACK
The premiere of NBC's new David Alan Grier/Delta Burke sitcom DAG
has been pushed back. The Tuesday comedy - in which Grier plays a
Secret Service agent assigned to protect the First Lady (Burke) -
will debut on Nov. 14 (9:30 pm/ET) rather than the original date
of Oct. 31. "They didn't want to air it and then have it
pre-empted for the elections on Nov. 7, and then have it come
back," an NBC spokesperson said. "They figured it's not a good
idea to have it on and off and on... " What will air in its
place? "They haven't decided yet," the rep says. "Hopefully it's
not When Good Pets Go Bad Part 3 or something."
ARNOLD RETURNS
Tom Arnold has inked a deal with Columbia TriStar Television to
star in a new reality-based syndicated series. The project -
still in the conception stage - likely would feature Roseanne's
ex interacting with real people.
MORE BROTHER
Despite brutal reviews and lackluster ratings, CBS is close to
ordering a second Big Brother, to air next year. The network
likely will begin airing promos soliciting applications from
prospective contestants. Should the reality show get a pick-up,
you can expect a major overhaul. For starters, executive producer
Paul Romer says that a more interesting group of housemates will
be rounded up. "This cast was in it for the fame and attention,"
he says. "I think the show works best if it's as close to real
life as possible. I think we lost something here." In other
words, there will be more war and sex in the follow-up. "I always
say you need a balance of emotions in the house," Romer adds.
"You have to have humor, confrontation, controversy and love."
In the Big Brother finale, Curtis came in 3rd with $50,000, Josh
was 2nd with $100,000, and Eddie won the $500,000.
JONES IN COVER
Partridge Family mom and Drew Carey Show semi-regular Shirley
Jones has signed on to play the widow of a mafia don on USA's
Cover Me.
SHOOT ME, PLEASE
98 Degrees will guest star on the Oct. 19 episode of NBC's Just
Shoot Me.
CURSED FRIENDS PRODUCER
NBC confirms that former Friends executive producer Adam Chase
has been brought on to salvage its troubled Steven Weber comedy,
Cursed, which premieres Oct. 26.

7. MF MOVIE OF THE WEEK
=======================================================
Jurassic Park/The Lost World (1999) (PG-13)
Dinosaurs are back...to-back in JURASSIC PARK and JURASSIC PARK:
THE LOST WORLD. In JURASSIC PARK, an eccentric billionaire
invites two paleontologists to his private island off South
America, where he is constructing a wild animal park--whose
specimens are genetically engineered dinosaurs. Breakthrough
digital effects bring these extinct animals roaring back to life.
Based on Michael Crichton's ravenous bestseller. Academy Award
Nominations: 3. Academy Awards: 3, including Best Visual Effects.
JURASSIC PARK: THE LOST WORLD is the sequel to the smash dinosaur
thriller. Dr. Ian Malcolm returns for more dino-horror when, four
years after the disaster at the would-be amusement park
attraction, another expedition is mounted to document the natural
behavior of the beasts at mysterious Site B, the island where
they were originally bred. The team--composed of Malcolm, a
prehistoric behavioralist, a wildlife videographer, and a systems
specialist--faces adversity in the form of a less-than-scrupulous
company executive, an Ahab-like big game hunter, and, of course,
the terrible lizards themselves.
