3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================

CAGE DONATES
Nicolas Cage has become the latest celeb to make a donation to
striking SAG actors. The Oscar winner wrote a check for $200,000,
besting the $100,000 contributions made by fellow thesps Kevin
Spacey and Harrison Ford.

AIRWOLF STAR IN MORE TROUBLE
Troubled actor Jan-Michael Vincent was sentenced Thursday to 60
days in jail after admitting that he violated his probation for
drunken driving four times. An Orange County, CA judge ruled that
56-year-old Vincent, who is on probation for a 1996 drunken
driving conviction, was in violation for three incidents of
public drunkenness and a July 20 arrest for an altercation with
his wife.

GERE'S NEXT
Richard Gere has signed on to star in the supernatural thriller
The Mothman Prophecies. The movie, helmed by Arlington Road
director Mark Pellington, will tell the tale of a reporter who
heads to a small West Virginia town to investigate a series of
strange phenomena. It's based on a 1975 book by John A. Keel
about a real-life investigation he conducted in the late 1960's.

BATMAN LANDS DIRECTOR
Warner Bros. is moving forward with its next Batman flick,
officially signing indie director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem
For A Dream) to helm the fifth installment. Titled Batman: Year
One, the film will chronicle "Bruce Wayne's first year as Batman,
including the self-doubts and blunders he had to overcome in
order to emerge as a full-blown crimefighter." There's no word on
who will assume the title role, previously played by Michael
Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney. Brad Pitt recently met
with Aronofsky, inciting a flurry of speculation that he was in
the running. Pitt's handlers, however, denied the rumors.

HECHE TELL-ALL
Simon & Schuster offshoot Scribner is close to shelling out big
bucks for Anne Heche's memoirs. The 31-year-old ex-partner of
Ellen DeGeneres reportedly has submitted a proposal for a tome
that would delve into her traumatic childhood. Heche's father - a
fundamentalist Baptist - died of AIDS when she was 14. Three
years later, her brother was killed in a car accident. It's not
clear whether the book will include juicy details about her
break-ups with Steve Martin and DeGeneres, or her recent "spell"
that landed her in a Fresno, CA hospital.

PRIESTLEY SAYS BAD WORD
Former Beverly Hills, 90210 hunk Jason Priestley had Fox sensors
scrambling yesterday when he blurted out the granddaddy of cuss
words during a live interview on Fox News Channel. Priestley -
who was promoting his documentary on the rock group Barenaked
Ladies - accused the media of printing lies about him "so they
can sell f---ing papers." A Fox source as saying Priestley seemed
out of sorts prior to the interview and there "was a conversation
of whether to put him on the air." The actor's rep blamed his
behavior on jet-lag.

LETO AND KIDMAN
Jared Leto will star opposite Nicole Kidman in the David
Fincher-directed thriller The Panic Room.

O.J. SIMPSON REPORTEDLY BUYS HOME IN MIAMI
Former football great and celebrity crime suspect O.J. Simpson
has bought a five-bedroom, four-bath home in the Miami suburb of
Kendall, the Miami Herald reported on Saturday.

GIBSON AND DOWNEY
Mel Gibson will direct Robert Downey Jr. in a Los Angeles stage
production of Shakespeare's Hamlet. A search is underway for a
theater and performances will begin in January.

STONE AND CAESAR
Oliver Stone is in talks to direct the thriller American Caesar,
a modern-day Caesar and Brutus story set in the nation's capitol.

ETHERIDGE SPLITS WITH GIRLFRIEND
Another high profile lesbian couple are going their separate
ways. The 12-year romance between rocker Melissa Etheridge and
director/girlfriend Julie Cypher has fizzled. "With the utmost
love and respect for one another, we have decided to separate,"
the couple announced in a statement released by Etheridge's
label, Island Records. No word yet on who gets custody of the
couple's three-year-old daughter, Baily Jean, and one-year-old
son, Beckett (Cypher conceived both children through artificial
insemination with the sperm of rocker David Crosby). "As
committed parents, our top priority continues to be what is in
the best interest of our children," adds the couple. "Though
elements of our lives will change, our family will always remain
intact."

RAPPER SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN JAIL
Grammy-winning rapper Stanley Howse was sentenced to 12 years in
prison for a weapons charge by a judge who said she was showing
him leniency because of childhood abuse that he endured. Howse,
who is also known as "Flesh Bone," in the platinum-selling rap
group Bone Thug-N-Harmony, could have faced 19 years behind bars
for pointing an AK-47 assault rifle at a friend during an
altercation last December.
But Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Darlene Schempp said Friday
that in sentencing Howse, 27, she had to take into account
beatings and other mistreatment he suffered as a child.

COUNTRY CHILD
Real-life country couple Amy Grant and Vince Gill are expecting a
child in March.

SPRINGFIELD ARRESTED
Rick Springfield, the '80s pop star best known for the hit
"Jesse's Girl," was arrested at his home in Malibu, CA, on Monday
night for alleged spousal assault, according to the Los Angeles
County Sheriff's Department. The singer and former General
Hospital star, married for 18 years to wife Barbara, spent a
night in jail and was released yesterday on $50,000 bail. "We're
together and we're going to work it out," he told reporters. The
couple have two children.

MADONNA SPEAKS OUT
Madonna is setting the record straight about issues of motherhood
and matrimony in the new US Weekly. The Golden Globe-winning pop
diva insists she has no immediate plans to wed beau Guy Ritchie -
despite the diamond ring he gave her on her on Aug. 16 (her 42nd
birthday and the day their son, Rocco, arrived home from the
hospital.) "I wouldn't say it's an engagement ring - at least not
right now," she tells the mag. "We talk about marriage but we
can't decide whether it's something that's necessary." And what
about reports that little Rocco, born a month premature, was at
one point near-death? "It wasn't as dramatic as everyone portrays
it," she says. "But because he was a month premature they put him
in intensive care to make sure his lungs were developed enough."

OSCAR FOR SALE
James Cagney's Best Actor Oscar for the 1942 classic Yankee
Doodle Dandy will be auctioned live via Pax TV and web site
ibidlive.tv beginning at 6 pm on Sept. 27. New York's Doyle
auction gallery, which is handling the sale on behalf of the late
actor's family, will also be accepting bids on his 1961 Bentley
S2 four-door car and the 6.2-carat diamond engagement ring
previously owned by his late wife, Frances.

KATHIE LEE'S RETURN TO TV
The former Live with Regis & Kathie Lee co-host has signed with
E! Entertainment Television to star in an original telepic called
Spinning Out of Control. She'll play Amanda Berkeley, a popular
sitcom star who's a substance-abusing mess backstage. Berkeley's
manager will be played by funnyman Howie Mandel, who's worked
with Gifford on several occasion as a fill-in host for Reege.

DR. LAURA GOES ON A BREAK
Dr. Laura Schlessinger's controversial new syndicated TV show has
stopped production for a week. A spokeswoman for the show, which
has drawn low ratings and protests from gay activists, insists
the move is part of a pre-planned hiatus. The break is expected
to give producer Paramount a chance to retool the struggling
daytime show.

SUPERMAN TAKES FLIGHT
Superman is returning to primetime television in a new one-hour
adventure drama series to air on The WB. The network has ordered
13 episodes of the project, which features a teenage Clark Kent
coming to grips with his emerging superpowers. The show - slated
to debut next season - will be set in the present day and will
include trademark characters Lois Lane and Lex Luther. The last
time the Superman franchise ventured into primetime was with
ABC's Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, which ran
from 1993 to 1997.

FREAKS CREATOR GETS GREEN-LIGHT
Fox has given Freaks and Geeks creator Paul Feig the go-ahead for
a new one-hour dramedy titled Ludlow Residence, about a lower
middle-class Midwestern family with seven kids. "I'm hoping to do
for family shows what Freaks and Geeks did for high school shows,
except the getting-canceled part," Feig said.

HOW ABOUT A FEW FRIENDS
Here's your chance to hang backstage with Chandler, Monica,
Phoebe, Joey, Ross and Rachel - Friends producer Bright, Kaufman,
Crane is auctioning off the opportunity for two to attend a
taping of the hit NBC sitcom, followed up by a behind-the-scenes
tour of the set. The winning bidders in the auction also get
their photo taken on the set on the Central Perk coffee shop
couch. Bidding as of this morning was up to $1,550. Proceeds
benefit children's charity I Am Your Child.

SURVIVOR STARS RAKE IT IN
The stars of CBS's Survivor are fetching a cool $20,000 each per
speaking engagement these days, student activities adviser Geneva
Foster of Weber State University (Ogden, UT) tells campus
newspaper The Signpost. At that rate, each Survivor contestant
will just need to line up 50 personal appearances in order to
catch up to $1 million Survivor winner Richard Hatch.

SHOWDOWN ON REGIS
Decked out in full Regis attire, Texas governor and presidential
candidate George W. Bush made an appearance on Live with Regis
this week and went toe-to-toe with Philbin and guest co-host
Susan Hawk of Survivor. Asked whether he tuned in to the CBS
reality smash, Bush replied: "I did, coming down the stretch in
particular. I was anxious to see who was going to survive, like
me." Hawk then quipped: "Just watch your last speech," referring
to her legendary snake/rat tongue-lashing. What does Bush think
of the tapioca-lovin' loudmouth truck driver? "I like her
spirit," he said. Indeed he did. At one point, Bush appeared to
be flirting with the
former castaway, trading pony stories while Philbin attempted to
get his attention.

WALTERS STAYS WITH ABC
Barbara Walters has signed a new five-year contract with ABC News
for a reported $12 million a year. As part of the pact, Walters
will continue anchoring 20/20 Friday and will appear on The
View - the morning talkshow she co-owns - three times a week. The
deal also calls for her to host two primetime specials a year
(down from four), one of which will be her annual Academy Awards
tie-in. "Barbara Walters is one of the most accomplished
journalists ever to work in television news," says ABC News
president David Westin. "Barbara has made extraordinary
contributions to the national discourse as well as to ABC News
and we look forward to this next chapter in her storied career."

FOX RETURNS TO SPIN CITY
Emmy winner Michael J. Fox will return to ABC's Spin City on Oct.
18 - although only his voice will be heard. Castmember Michael
Boatman tells next week's Entertainment Weekly that Fox "checks
in" with his former colleagues in the episode. He adds that the
actor may appear "in one or two more episodes in which there will
be more interaction with the rest of the cast." Charlie Sheen
steps in this season for Fox, who left to battle Parkinson's
disease.

OPRAH'S HECKLER
Presidential wannabe George W. Bush made history during a live
broadcast of the The Oprah Winfrey Show Tuesday when he became
the first-ever guest on the show to be heckled by a member of the
studio audience. An unidentified man in the audience twice
interrupted the interview before Winfrey called for a commercial
break and had him removed from the premises. Upon returning from
the break, Winfrey said, "OK, we're live with Presidential
candidate George Bush...I told him, 'Fifteen years of shows,
never had a heckler; you come on, I get a heckler.'" She then
turned to Bush and said, "It's okay, you deal with that all the
time." Dubya seemed to take it all in stride. "Glad to break the
record somehow, you know?," he joked on air. An Oprah spokeswoman
did not know the identity of the heckler or what became of him
after he was booted out onto the street. She also was not able to
identify what all the shouting was about.
