GORE TO ATTACK HOLLYWOOD VIOLENCE
Al Gore's vow to lean on Hollywood until it stops peddling violent
material to kids puts him loudly in league with poll-tested unease
over entertainment fare, and seemingly at odds with an industry
that lubricates his party and campaign with cash. "It's not about
censorship," the Democratic presidential candidate said Monday on
TV's "Oprah," a venue suited to the women voters he's courting.
"It's about citizenship, including corporate citizenship." Gore
says he's giving the industry six months to stop marketing violent
movies, recordings and video games to underage youth. If that
doesn't happen, and he becomes president, he said, he would seek
sanctions against offenders. In a related story Walt Disney Co. on
Tuesday issued a pledge to keep R-rated movie advertisements off
its ABC television network during prime time.
KIDMAN, STREEP EYE 'THE HOUR'
Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep are in talks to star in "The Hours,"
based on Michael Cunningham's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the
same name. The story draws on the life and work of Virginia Woolf
to tell the story of three women: Woolf, who is portrayed in the
throes of writing "Mrs. Dalloway" and contemplating suicide; Laura
Brown, a young wife and mother in the suffocating confines of her
tidy little life in Los Angeles in 1949; and Clarissa Vaughn, who
is giving a party in the present in New York for her closest
friend, Richard, an award-winning writer dying of AIDS. As yet, no
director is on board for the film.
BERRY IN 'SWORDFISH'?
Word is that Halle Berry is in negotiations to star opposite John
Travolta and Hugh Jackman in Warner Bros.' "Swordfish" for
producers Joel Silver and Jonathan Krane. Berry is said to receive
an estimated $2.5 million, her highest payday yet.
IT'S A BOY FOR MARLEE MATLIN
It's a boy for Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin. The child, the
second for the actress and her policeman husband, Kevin Grandalski,
was born at an undisclosed Los Angeles-area hospital on Tuesday,
Matlin's publicist said. The couple have a 4-year-old daughter.
Matlin, 35, won an Academy Award for her role in "Children of a
Lesser God." The deaf actress has a recurring role on NBC's "The
West Wing."
SCOTT TAPPED FOR 'BLACK HAWK'
Ridley Scott (G.I. Jane, Blade Runner), helmer of the box office
smash "Gladiator," is in discussions to direct a feature film
version of the non-fiction novel "Black Hawk Down," for
Disney-based producer Jerry Bruckheimer. "Hawk," based on the book
of the same name by journalist-turned-author Mark Bowden, is the
gritty story of the 1993 Special Forces military operation in
Somalia that left 18 U.S. soldiers dead and many more injured.
MANDY MOORE CAST IN 'PRINCESS DIARIES'
Pop star Mandy Moore will make her feature film debut in Garry
Marshall's "The Princess Diaries". The film stars Anne Hathaway
(Get Real), Heather Matarazzo, Julie Andrews, Erik Von Detten (Odd
Man Out, So Weird) in a story about a girl who discovers she is the
princess of
a small European country. Moore will shoot the film this fall, at
the same time that she'll record her second album.
$3 MILLION HOME FOR PRINZE
Freddie Prinze Jr. now owns a $3 million home. Prinze, 24, bought a
five-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot house in Los Angeles' San Fernando
Valley, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. The one-story home,
built in the 1930s, has a guest house and a pool. The home is in
the Old World style, an architectural and design style that
reflects European antiquity. Hmmmmm..my guess is that he will never
have to share a bathroom!
LOOKING FOR 'FLETCH'
Reports are that Matthew Perry, John Cusack, and Chris Rock have
all expressed interest in playing the lead in Kevin Smith's FLETCH
film, though Smith reportedly prefers either Ben Affleck or Jason
Lee.
DISNEY GREENLIGHTS 'COUNTRY BEAR JAMBOREE' FILM
Disney has reportedly given the greenlight to "Country Bears,"
a live-action feature based on the Disneyland attraction The
Country Bear Jamboree.
PHIL COLLINS TO BE A DADDY AGAIN
British musician Phil Collins is to become a father again at the
age of 49, the BBC reported on Wednesday. A spokesman for the
singers said Collins and his third wife, Orianne, 28, were
expecting their first child next year. Orianne was said to be three
months pregnant.
SPACEY DONATES $100,000 TO STRIKING ACTORS
Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey has donated $100,000 to an
economic relief fund for union actors staging a 19-week-old strike
against television and radio advertisers. The contribution from the
star of such films as "American Beauty," "L.A. Confidential" and
"The Usual Suspects" comes two days before negotiators for the
actors and the advertising industry return to the bargaining table
in a bid to renew contract talks stalled since mid-April.

BIG BROTHER WALKOUT
Rebellion was afoot Saturday in the "Big Brother" house. The
reality show's six remaining contestants threatened to march out of
the camera-filled house in which they've been sequestered since
July, forgoing their shot at the $500,000 prize. "Some things in
life are more important than money," one contestant said. The plot
to walk out on Wednesday's upcoming live show, when the next
housemate was scheduled to be ousted, was made public on the CBS
show's companion Webcast on Saturday. Some players expressed doubt
that all would follow through on the pact. "Big Brother" was
scheduled to end Sept. 30 with one grand prize winner, the person
who survived ouster votes by fellow players and TV viewers. I guess
we will see what happens today.
CHIPMUNKS CREATOR SUES UNIVERSAL
Bagdasarian Prods., creators of Alvin and the Chipmunks, filed a
lawsuit Monday against Universal Studios, accusing the studio of
failing to live up to an exclusive licensing agreement by not
creating movies or television shows featuring the characters. The
suit seeks $100 million in damages. The lawsuit was filed in Los
Angeles Superior Court and alleges breach of contract, intentional
and negligent misrepresentation, fraudulent inducement and trade
libel.
DR LAURA'S TV DEBUT
No one stormed the studio. The host didn't breathe fire. Defying
months of protests by gay-rights groups, Dr. Laura Schlessinger,
radio's ethics noodge, launched her daytime TV talk show Monday.
Peace prevailed on the air. A target of gay activists since her
public dismissal of homosexuality as "deviant" and dangerous to
society, Schlessinger has also railed on the radio against
abortion, divorce, feminism and interfaith marriage. But for her TV
premiere, the syndicated "Dr. Laura" chose a troubling but not so
controversial topic: "Teens and Drugs." "What is to blame?"
Schlessinger posed at the top of the show. "Whatever it is, I'm
sick of it, I'm very worried, and I want it stopped." With that in
mind, she led into a no-nonsense, consensus-seeking hour.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WATCHED THE VMA'
Rage Against The Machine bassist Timothy Commerford pled guilty to
charges of assault and disorderly conduct in a Manhattan court
Sept. 8 and was sentenced to time served, stemming from an incident
during Thursday night's MTV Video Music Awards at New York's Radio
City Music Hall. Commerford climbed a large set piece as Limp
Bizkit was accepting an award, was forcibly removed from the venue
by New York police, and spend the rest of the evening in jail. The
band's bodyguard, Perrin Bentle, was also arrested on an
obstruction of justice charge and arraigned Monday. According to a
District Attorney's office spokesperson, Bentle's case was
adjourned until Oct. 3 and he was released on his own recognizance.
NBC TO RELEASE SPACE REALITY SERIES
NBC is hoping for a ratings liftoff from "Survivor" mastermind Mark
Burnett. The network has agreed to pay nearly $40 million for the
rights to Burnett's "Destination Mir," a reality series that would
launch an everyday American into space for a rendezvous with the
Russian space station Mir, according to Tuesday's Daily Variety.
The series would follow a group of would-be cosmonauts from space
camp to launch pad over 13 to 15 episodes, culminating with a
dramatic live broadcast in which a winner is picked and sent into
space.
CLINTON SCANDAL COMING BACK TO TELEVISION
The Clinton-Lewinsky scandal is coming back to television. Not as a
news story but as a film story. HBO has bought the rights to
Jeffrey Toobin's book "A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex
Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President," about the
behind-the-scenes details of the scandal that led to President
Clinton's impeachment.

5. MOVIE REVIEW
================================================
INDEPENDENCE DAY ID4 - Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum
Every once in awhile, a person comes across a completely beautiful
thing. Love, a newborn baby, and crisp sunrises are all beautiful
things. Then you buy the Independence Day DVD and everything else
pales in comparison. That's what happened with me today when I
picked up ID4. I thought Fight Club was loaded, but ID4 tops it by
leaps and bounds. First of all, the movie is excellent and
certified in THX as usual. The DVD also has most of the original
features that were included in the Laserdisc edition that was
released a few years back, but the DVD also has storyboards, photo
galleries, and DVDWEB links that the Laser could never touch. Be
prepared to spend more time watching the special features than you
spend watching the film. Features include: THX Certified, 5.1
sound, commentary, trailers, commercials, the original theater
ending, Special Edition release with 9 extra minutes of footage, 2
F/X commentaries, DVDROM, gallery, storyboards, concept art, 3-D
interactive menus, and alternate biplane ending.
MAN ON THE MOON - Jim Carrey, Danny DeVito, Courtney Love
Honestly, I bought this movie because of Jim Carrey not because of
Andy Kaufman. Parts of the film were funny, but it was a lot more
serious than I thought it would be...even more so than The Truman
Show. Sections of the story seemed weak, but Carrey completely
carries the plot, the cast, and hangs onto the audience until the
very end. He definitely deserved the Golden Globe he received for
this movie and should have at least gotten an Oscar nomination for
the role. The back of the DVD case says it all, "Jim Carrey may be
a better Andy Kaufman than Andy Kaufman." The DVD features
include: DTS and 5.1 sound, behind-the-scenes, deleted scenes,
music videos, a spotlight on Kaufman, the trailer, and DVDROM
content.
BICENTENNIAL MAN - Robin Williams, Sam Neill, Oliver Platt
I laughed, I cried, and I've seen it twice in three days. I had no
idea this movie was going to be this good because it was only in
theaters for three weeks here. I bought it to see Robin and
watched it again for the movie itself. Everything about the flick
is well done. The story is touching and painfully sweet, the
casting is exceptional with Sam Neill and Oliver Platt delivering
wonderful supporting roles, and the love story which underlies the
plot is heartwarming. This one would be great for the entire
family or even a date movie. The DVD contains a featurette,
trailer, and 5.1 sound.
