3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================

CROWE SIDELINED
Gladiator stud Russell Crowe injured his shoulder while training
for his role as a circus freak in the Jodie Foster-directed film
Flora Plum. Crowe - who may or may not have been the cause of Meg
Ryan's split from hubby Dennis Quaid - has flown back to his home
in Australia to undergo surgery. Depending on the length of the
actor's recuperation, producers reportedly may be forced to recast.
Claire Danes co-stars as the object of Crowe's affection.

BAZAAR ZELLWEGER SCANDAL
Harper's Bazaar reportedly pulled a planned cover with Nurse Betty
star Renée Zellweger because she looked too fat. The 31-year-old
actress had gained roughly 10 pounds for her role in Bridget Jones'
Diary, but according to columnist Mitchell Fink, it was too much
for Harper's. "The reason why Renée is not on the cover of Harper's
Bazaar," said Zellweger's rep, "[is] because [editor] Kate Betts
and her staff felt that the weight gain, which was for a movie
role, was not the image Harper's wanted to present to the public -
an actress 10 pounds overweight." A rep for Harper's, however,
says: "She looked very uncomfortable, and as a result, it didn't
make for an inviting cover." Zellweger has since dropped the extra
poundage, as was evident at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she
was a presenter.

DEVITO IN 'SMOOCHY'
Danny DeVito will helm the Warner Bros.' project Death To Smoochy.
The film is a comedy about Smoochy, a Barney-type kids character
who finds his way on to someone's hitlist.

EMINEM RULES AT VMAs
Bad-boy rapper Eminem took top honors at last night's MTV Video
Music Awards, broadcast live from New York's Radio City Music Hall.
In addition to grabbing Video of the Year for "The Real Slim
Shady," he won Best Male Video and shared Best Rap Video honors
with his mentor, Dr. Dre. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation, calling Eminem's lyrics homophobic and blatantly
offensive, protested the rapper's appearance on the show. 'N Sync
was the most honored act, winning three trophies for "Bye, Bye,
Bye." R&B singer Aaliyah picked up two awards, Best Female Video
and Best Video From a Film, for "Try Again."

TLC'S LISA LOPES MISSING
Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, member of the female R&B group TLC, has
vanished without a trace. The singer, known for her
headline-grabbing antics (including torching her boyfriend's
mansion), was last seen Thursday just prior to the Labor Day
weekend. "I'm very concerned," her business partner Ian Burke told
the Post. "God forbid something bad happened." UPDATE: Lopes has
been seen at a trendy New Orleans hotel with her current boyfriend.
Her uncle believes they may have eloped.

RUDY'S BIG ADVENTURE
Survivor's lovable grump Rudy Boesch has signed on with Universal
to be a spokesperson for the company's Islands of Adventure theme
park in Orlando, FL. The national print and TV campaign, shot on
location on Wednesday, will debut next week. "Rudy embodies the
engaging spirit of adventure that is Universal Orlando," says Fred
Lounsberry, executive vice president, marketing and sales,
Universal Orlando. "Rudy has become a folk hero. If he can handle
38 days on an island in the South China Sea, the maximum G-force
conditions on one of our coasters are no problem for Rudy." Adds
Boesch: "I held on to Universal's Hulk coaster better than I did
the pole. This island adventure was a lot more fun, too."

BEWARE OF BETTY
Moviegoers expecting the new Renée Zellweger film, Nurse Betty, to
be a light and fluffy comedy should brace themselves: The movie
contains a gruesome sequence in which a man's scalp is knifed off
by co-star Chris Rock. Morgan Freeman, who plays Rock's criminal
sidekick in the Neil LaBute-directed flick, admits that he's
concerned audiences may be getting the wrong impression from
Betty's marketing campaign. "It's a long way from whimsical,"
Freeman says. "I don't think it's all that whimsical, tearing
somebody's head off." Nurse Betty opened Friday.

RIMES DIAGNOSED
Country singer LeAnn Rimes, who has been plagued by a slew of
health problems in recent months, has been diagnosed with the
Epstein-Barr virus. "It runs you down, you get fatigued," Rimes
says. "It turns out I was working through the main part of it, when
I should have been in bed."

ALTMAN BASHES BUSH
Acclaimed film director Robert Altman (Nashville, The Player) says
he will relocate to Europe if George W. Bush wins the presidential
election in November. "If George Bush is elected president, I'm
leaving for France," Altman said, adding that a Bush victory would
be "a catastrophe for the whole world." As a result, the four-time
Oscar nominee will be throwing his support behind Al Gore, whom he
believes "would be a good president." Meanwhile, on the heels of
news that Gore will appear on the season premiere of The Oprah
Winfrey Show on Sept. 11, Bush has agreed to stop by as well; he
will be Winfrey's guest on Sept. 19.

STREEP JOINS CAGE
Meryl Streep is in talks to star alongside Nicolas Cage in the
black comedy Adaptation. Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman, the
creative team behind Being John Malkovich, would serve as the
film's director and writer, respectively. The project tells the
story of a screenwriter coping with sexual frustrations and
personal insecurities.

SHIELDS STALKER
Mark Ronald Bailey, who allegedly has been stalking Brooke Shields
since 1985, was ordered to stay away from the actress for 10 years.

KATHY GRIFFIN'S BIG OFFER
Outspoken reality-TV junkie Kathy Griffin says that producers of
CBS's Big Brother approached her about moving into the compound for
a two-night stay. Griffin spilled the beans at an L.A. comedy club
appearance and said she'd only move in if she could bring fellow
comedian Andy Dick along for the sleep-over. The offer was
presumably another attempt to spice up the lackluster series.
Griffin confirms through a spokesperson that the offer was indeed
made, but decided to pass. A Big Brother rep had no comment. On
Wednesday's live show, producers tried to coax one of the six
remaining housemates into leaving with a $50,000 offer. The idea
was to replace him/her with a more interesting contestant. No one
took the bait.

BARBARA PURSUES BARBRA
Barbara Walters is wooing Barbra Streisand and Anne Heche for
interviews on 20/20. Streisand - who says her Sept. 28 concert at
New York's Madison Square Garden will be her final live
performance - also reportedly has been approached by Rosie
O'Donnell and Larry King. Heche, meanwhile, likely would talk about
her recent breakup with Ellen DeGeneres and her subsequent
"breakdown."

NY TAB SLAMS KATHIE LEE
Hopefully Kathie Lee Gifford doesn't read the New York Post. Regis
Philbin's former sidekick was featured on a recent edition next to
the headline: "Kathie Lee Who? Regis' Live ratings soar 26% since
Gifford quit." Since Gifford's departure, Philbin has featured
rotating celebrity guest hosts, including Lea Thompson, Roseanne,
Joy Behar and, most recently, Dolly Parton. Next week Sarah
Ferguson, the Duchess of York, will join Philbin. "When she said
good-bye, it opened us up to a whole new audience of those who
either might not have been fans or hadn't even thought about the
show," executive producer Michael Gelman told said. But in
Gifford's defense, some attribute the boost to all the attention
surrounding her July 28 swan song - which garnered huge ratings.

DENNIS FRANZ IN A TOGA
NYPD Blue writer/producer David Milch has signed a deal with
DreamWorks to develop a cop show set in ancient Rome. Ridley
Scott - who directed DreamWorks's summer smash Gladiator - is
expected to direct the two-hour pilot.

KOPPEL RENEWAL
Ted Koppel has inked a new five-year pact with ABC to continue as
host of Nightline.

O.J. MINISERIES A GO
O.J. Simpson lost a court battle to block an upcoming miniseries
about his sensational murder trial. The former football star
claimed the project, based on Lawrence Schiller's book American
Tragedy, would expose confidential information he shared with
former lawyer and friend Robert Kardashian. But a judge ruled that
Simpson did not sufficiently prove he would be harmed by the
miniseries.

TODAY COUPLE WED
Melanie Norton and Peter Ginsburg probably never dreamed they'd
hear these words uttered during their wedding ceremony: "... but
first, these messages and your local news." Well, commercial breaks
were par for the course recently as the happy couple tied the knot
live on the Today show before 6 million of their closest friends
and family. It was the culmination of a three-month-long event that
allowed Today viewers to plan every aspect of the ceremony - from
the bride's gown to the cake - via the Internet. Following the
all-expense paid wedding, the Ginsburgs learned that viewers chose
Hawaii over Paris, Rome and Mexico as their honeymoon destination.
But host Katie Couric revealed what may be the best perk: "You're
going to have the most wonderful wedding video ever."

NBC WANTS MORE LAW
The Law & Order franchise may spawn yet another spin-off. NBC is in
advance talks with producer Dick Wolf to create a third Law & Order
series - to begin production as early as December. The enduring
success of the 10-year-old Law & Order led to last season's Special
Victims Unit, which performed solidly in the ratings.

MESSING WEDDING
Will & Grace star Debra Messing married longtime beau Daniel Zelman
on Sunday in Santa Barbara, CA. The 32-year-old Emmy nominee, who
wore Vera Wang, met Zelman eight years ago at New York University.

GERVASE AND MTV AND NASH
Survivor Gervase Peterson served as a special correspondent for
Access Hollywood at Thursday's MTV Video Music Awards. Meanwhile,
Peterson will join fellow castaways Jenna Lewis and Joel Klug in an
episode of CBS's Nash Bridges to air during November sweeps.
