3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================

SCARY SEQUEL
Miramax has ordered a sequel to its summer smash, Scary Movie,
which has earned nearly $150 million at the box office so far -
making it the studio's highest-grossing film ever. Keenen Ivory
Wayans will return as director, and sibs Shawn Wayans and Marlon
Wayans will pen the script and star. However, the second
installment will feature a new cast and spoof a different group of
films.

DE NIRO SEA WORTHY
Fresh from starring in one of the summer's biggest box office duds,
Robert De Niro, who played Fearless Leader in The Adventures of
Rocky and Bullwinkle, will star in the $60 million thriller, City
by the Sea. The film is based on the true story of a son of an
executed death-row inmate who becomes a detective only to have his
own son become a killer.

MURRAY'S GAME SHOW
Bill Murray will star in the comedy Press Your Luck, the true story
of a man who cracked the popular game show's secret code and went
on to win $100,000.

HULK SMACKS WCW WITH SUIT
Aging he-man Hulk Hogan has filed suit against World Championship
Wrestling, accusing creative director Vince Russo of calling him
names on television. According to court papers, the incident
occurred following a July 9 bout that Hogan won because his
opponent refused to wrestle. Afterwards, Hogan says Russo followed
him and said he was "playing politics."

MAMA JUDD SPLITS WITH HUBBY
Naomi Judd has filed for divorce from her husband of 11 years,
Larry Strickland. The 54-year-old country singer reportedly is
accusing Strickland of cheating on her.

EMINEM FILES FOR DIVORCE
His KIM - ROT IN PIECES tattoo was kind of a sign, but Eminem wants
to make it official: The controversial rapper has filed for divorce
from his high school sweetheart, Kelly Mathers. The duo - who have
a 4-year-old daughter, Hallie - married last year. "In early June,
the couple separated," said a statement released by Eminem's label,
Interscope Records, "and since then Eminem has come to the decision
that a divorce is unavoidable."

KISS ACTORS REUNITE
Morgan Freeman is in talks to reunite with his Kiss the Girls
co-star Ashley Judd in the thriller High Crimes. The story focuses
on a Harvard Law School prof who defends her military husband after
he's accused by the Army of desertion and murder.

MADONNA DINES OUT
Helping to dispel rumors that their newborn son, Rocco, was
experiencing life-threatening complications, Madonna and beau Guy
Ritchie were seen Tuesday night dining at L.A.'s Palm restaurant.
Speculation was that little Rocco, whose Aug. 11 birth came three
weeks early, was suffering from lung, kidney and liver problems. A
rep for the pop star/actress/diva confirms that the new arrival is
safe at home with his parents.

SNIPES BLASTS SHAFT
Wesley Snipes is giving the shaft to, um, Shaft. The actor insists
that, contrary to rumors, he turned down the title role in the
big-screen remake - not the other way around. "I was offered the
film and the script was terrible," the actor told Access Hollywood.
"It was an insult not only to African-American culture, but it was
an insult to the icon of what Shaft was. [The studio] didn't care
and I told them to find somebody else." Snipes, who says he hasn't
seen the movie, added that he has no beef with Samuel L. Jackson,
who eventually won the role made famous by Richard Roundtree. "Sam
knows I'm not dissin' him," he said. "I'm dissin' the people who
made the movie." For the record, that includes writer/director John
Singleton, producer Scott Rudin and Paramount Pictures.

MORE MADONNA
Madonna reportedly will record several songs for an upcoming film
about the history of soccer. The material mother of two, who is
said to be a fan of the sport, will sing English versions of
Caetano Veloso's "Alegria Alegria" and Giberto Gil's "Aquele
Abraco," on the soundtrack for the film, which features interviews
with famous soccer players as well as their fans.

OSCAR THE GROUCH
Apparently, the "honorary Oscar" presented to President Clinton
Monday evening in Los Angeles was in fact a fake - but that's
little consolation to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences. California Gov. Gray Davis bestowed the award upon
Clinton for his "achievements as president" at a bash on the
Paramount Studios lot. "Our concern is that people are commenting
that the president got an honorary Oscar," John Pavlik, said the
Academy's rep. "We're not angry, but we want people to understand
that it wasn't really an Oscar - it was a counterfeit Oscar being
used in an inappropriate way."

UNFORGETTABLE PAST
Natalie Cole once worked as a pimp's come-on girl to support her
heroine addiction. That's one of many sordid tales the 50-year-old
singer writes about in Angel on My Shoulder, her upcoming memoir.
"She stood on the street and waved at guys in cars," Digby Diehl,
Cole's collaborator on Angel, says. "She'd bring a guy to the curb,
where other women would do the business. She advertised her body so
that they could sell theirs... it was the lowest point in her
life." The book hits store shelves in November. NBC is planning a
movie version, in which Cole would star.

NEW ARRIVAL FOR BOWIE, IMAN
David Bowie, 53, and model/wife Iman, 45, became the proud parents
of a girl, Alexandria Zahra Jones, on Tuesday. The new arrival
weighed in at 7 pounds, 4.6 ounces. Bowie reportedly assisted in
the delivery. The couple, who married in 1992, each have one child
from previous marriages.

ANOTHER O.J. SUIT
O.J. Simpson is suing former lawyer Lawrence Schiller, claiming he
shouldn't be allowed to use confidential information from his trial
in an upcoming CBS miniseries. The CBS project is to be based on
Schiller's book American Tragedy, which chronicles Simpson's trial
for the murder of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron
Goldman.

DUCHOVNY LOOKS AT EVOLUTION
David Duchovny continues to move away from The X-Files and towards
a career in films with word of his possibly joining Ivan Reitman's
Evolution movie project. Duchovny is currently only in preliminary
negotiations to join the cast of the ensemble science fiction
comedy. The eventual film's story is about a meteor striking the
earth and releasing one-celled organisms that quickly morph through
evolutionary states threatening our planet in the process.

HENRIKSEN AND INVITATION
Lance Henriksen (Millennium, Aliens) has signed on to star in a
suspense thriller called The Invitation. The actor will take on the
role of a wealthy, eccentric writer who has a near death encounter.
Afterwards, he invites his friends out to his island home where
they soon suspect that his party plans may include putting them all
through a similar experience. The film, which has a budget in the
$5M range, will be directed by Pat Bermel, who also wrote the
film's script. Matt Huson (Lost & Found) will produce.

MOUSE HELMER
Stuart Little director Rob Minkoff is on the verge of signing on to
helm the film's sequel. Though the studio is staying quiet on story
specifics, reports are that "insiders" have revealed that the
second film will have even more CGI characters than the first one,
including a unnamed bird as well as a best friend with whom Stuart
may fall in love. In addition, Stuart will fly over the city in a
model airplane. Columbia is hoping to have Stuart Little 2 hit
theaters for Christmas 2001.

FRAIN JOINS CRISTO
James Frain (Where the Heart Is, Reindeer Games) is the most recent
addition to the cats of Disney's The Count of Monte Cristo project.
There's no word on what role he might play in the film that stars
Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce. This film is currently shooting in
Dublin and Malta.

ANOTHER ACTOR JOINS HARBOR
Dan Aykroyd has joined the cast of Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor
project. The comic actor will take on the real-life role of Captain
Thurman, who learns that the Japanese are going to attack Pearl
prior to their doing so.

THOMAS JOINS GANGS
Henry Thomas (ET, All the Pretty Horses) is the latest addition to
the cast of Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York project. Thomas
will take on the role of Johnny Sirocco, the best friend to
Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Amsterdam Vallon.

WORD ON THE STREETS, BUT NOT ABLE TO CONFIRM...

I've been hearing rumors that Matthew McConaughey will join the
cast of Sex and the City. He's rumored to be playing himself in an
episode that has been shot in Los Angeles.

"Pitch Black" star Vin Diesel may be teaming up with Sylvester
Stallone for a new action flick for Warner Brothers entitled "X vs.
Sever". The story tells of an older Government agent being pursued
by a bounty hunter and was at one time apparently seeking Wesley
Snipes and Jet Li for the two roles.

Reports are in saying that Jason X is now in post-production and
that Friday, April 13, 2001 is now the confirmed release date.
Rumors are saying that this installment has more death scenes than
any other Jason flick. Also, the writer of The Cell, Mark
Protosevich is currently working on the script for Freddy vs.
Jason.

TELEVISION

SURVIVOR RICHARD TAKES TO THE MIKE
Want to give Survivor's Richard Hatch, the cold and calculating
Tagi alliance member, a piece of your mind? Well, now's your
chance. The Providence Journal reports that the 39-year-old
corporate trainer who viewers love to hate will guest-host a
talk-radio program in his home state of Rhode Island during the
week of Aug. 28.

ANOTHER SURVIVOR
Sean Kenniff, who will appear as a doctor next month on Guiding
Light, has been tapped by Extra to serve as a New York-based
medical correspondent.

MORE SURVIVOR
This week's penultimate episode of Survivor once again scored a new
high in the ratings. An average 28.67 million viewers tuned in to
watch Sean's swan song - 670,000 more than last week. Next week's
three-hour finale (which includes a one-hour town hall meeting
hosted by Bryant Gumbel) is expected to draw upwards of 40 million
viewers, or one-third of TV viewers. CBS reportedly is charging
advertisers $600,000 per 30-second commercial, on par with what NBC
pulls in for a 30-second spot on ER.

RICE NOVEL GETS DOUBLE PLAY
Showtime and ABC are joining forces to bring Anne Rice's
best-selling novel, Feast of All Saints, to the small screen.
Showtime, which will shoulder more of the production costs, will
premiere the four-hour project early next year, after which ABC
will run it as a two-part miniseries. The cast includes Forest
Whitaker, Peter Gallagher, Gloria Reuben, Ben Vereen, Eartha Kitt
and Pam Grier.

GOODMAN SERIES IS NORMAL
FOX finally has settled on a name for its upcoming John Goodman
comedy: Normal, Ohio. The former Roseanne star plays a gay father
who returns home to live with his sister. Previous titles
considered for the sitcom included Don't Ask and Butch.

FRIENDS WEDDING?
When last seen, Friends super-couple Monica and Chandler were
celebrating their engagement. Now there's buzz that a lavish
wedding could take place this fall. Warner Bros. had no comment,
but there's this promising sign: Elliot Gould, who plays Monica's
proud papa, is returning early in the season for several episodes.
"I haven't seen a script, but I'm being booked for two of their
early shows and I'm told there may be more shows for me to do," he
said. "But I don't know [if there's going to be a wedding]. If I
did know, it would probably be out of line to tell you. But I hope
it's a wedding."

SAY IT AIN'T SO SAMMY
NBC has canceled the critically panned animated comedy,
produced/voiced by comedian David Spade, after just two weeks.

ROLLINS HAS VISIONS
Singer/actor Henry Rollins will host Fox's upcoming anthology
series Night Visions, which premieres Oct 6.

JENNIE GARTH WORKS THE $TREET
Former Beverly Hills, 90210 leading lady Jennie Garth is in serious
negotiations to reteam with the show's creator, Darren Star, on his
new Fox drama set on Wall Street, The $treet. "There's interest on
both sides," confirms a Fox spokesperson. "Nothing is confirmed
yet, but there have been talks." For her part, Garth, who recently
got engaged to actor Peter Facinelli, says the role in question is
short-term. "As of right now, it's six episodes," she says. The
series, which premieres on Nov. 1, focuses on a group of young
hotshot traders and stars Tom Everett Scott, Christian Campbell
(Neve's bro) and Jennifer Connelly.

WEST WING REJECTS HONOR
The West Wing now has more room on its mantle for Emmys. John
Wells, executive producer of the hit NBC drama, has given back the
Family Television Award presented to the show earlier this month
after series star Allison Janney's comments in support of the
actors' strike were deleted from the telecast. "The West Wing is
not interested in an award from an organization that supports
censorship of free speech," Wells said in a statement. The awards
are handed out by the Association of National Advertisers, one of
the groups involved in the dispute. I have to applaud West Wing
for this one.

CAROL BRADY MEETS ALLY MCBEAL
Florence Henderson will appear on Ally McBeal this season as Dr.
Shirley Grouper, a doctor who teaches a course on how to keep a man
happy. The episode is tentatively scheduled to air on Nov. 6.
Meanwhile, the cast of the David E. Kelley dramedy are anxiously
awaiting the arrival of Robert Downey Jr., who begins work on the
series later this week playing a love interest for Calista
Flockhart. "[I called] David going, 'Don't you think Elaine needs
to meet him,' " Jane Krakowski, who plays kooky Elaine, said. "He's
mainly here for Calista's character, but hopefully I'll get to fall
in a few doors and eavesdrop."

BEGGARS CAN BE CHOOSERS
Jim Belushi is joining the cast of Showtime's Hollywood satire
Beggars and Choosers. No word on airdates yet.

MARTIN GOES ANIMATED
NBC has ordered six episodes of The Downer Channel, a half-hour
sketch comedy/animation show being developed by Steve Martin.

AYLESWORTH GETS SOULS
Reiko Aylesworth (A Will of Their Own) has been signed for the lead
role in UPN's upcoming supernatural TV series All Souls. Though
there aren't any specifics about her role in the program, given
that the series is about a haunted hospital, you gotta figure she
works in the place, probably a doctor. The first of the six
contracted episodes of the program will start shooting in Montreal
next month.

FOX GETS KLUMPS
The Fox TV network has snagged the exclusive broadcast rights to
Nutty Professor II: The Klumps and The Adventures of Rocky &
Bullwinkle. The Klumps deal allows the network to show the film
four times over a period of 3 ½ years starting in May 2003. Rocky
will get two runs over three years. Both films will first make the
usual rounds theaters through premium cable channels first.

is a decorated Vietnam vet who knows more about hand-to-hand combat
