3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================

MYERS, UNIVERSAL SETTLE
One of the nastiest feuds to rock Hollywood in years has been
resolved. Mike Myers and Universal Pictures have settled their
bitter dispute surrounding the proposed Dieter film. Universal sued
Myers when the actor abruptly dropped out of the project, citing an
unsatisfactory script. Myers responded with a countersuit, in which
he claimed the studio attempted to bully him into proceeding with
the film, based on his offbeat Saturday Night Live character. At
one point, Myers was said to have hired a private investigator to
dig up dirt on his adversaries. But that's all water under the
bridge. As part of the deal, "Myers will write his next original
character-based comedy as a co-production for Universal Studios and
DreamWorks (which reportedly served as a middleman in the
settlement), with Imagine Entertainment producing," Universal said
in a statement, which quoted Myers as saying, "I'm glad to put all
of this behind me, and I'm looking forward to doing a movie that we
can all be proud of."

MONSTER MASH
Billy Crystal and John Goodman have been tapped to voice the main
characters in the upcoming computer-generated film from Disney and
Pixar. Monsters, Inc., expected to land in theaters in November
2001, is being described as a comedy/adventure set in a "scare
factory." Other familiar voices in the film will include James
Coburn, Steve Buscemi, Jennifer Tilly and Bonnie Hunt.

THE PANIC ROOM
Forest Whitaker & Dwight Yoakam are in final negotiations to star
in this thriller from writer David Koepp ("Snake Eyes", "Mission:
Impossible"). The pair will be playing two-thirds of a trio of
thieves trying to get their hands on a money cache hidden in an old
New York brownstone - trouble is they have to go through a single
mother (Sandra Bullock) and daughter determined to stop the
invaders getting into their home. Shooting is expected to begin
later in the year.

PETER PAN AND SONY
Director PJ Hogan ("Muriel's Wedding", "My Best Friend's Wedding")
is in 'advanced negotiations' to helm a new $100 million budgeted
version of the classic J.M. Barrie novel "Peter Pan" for Sony.
Hogan beat out such luminaries as David O. Russell ("Three Kings")
for the role while "Contact" writer Michael Goldenberg is writing
the script and will update the classic tale. Talks are now underway
with ILM to provide the FX.

STAR TREK 10 MOVING ALONG
Patrick Stewart talked recently and revealed the film seems to be
underway - "What we have at the moment is a 28-page storyline,
which has been developed by John Logan, Brent Spiner, who plays
Data, and Rick Berman, our executive producer". A first draft is
expected soon and while "the studio are not yet totally committed
to the movie, but it looks as though it's going to happen".

CAGE = GREEN GOBLIN, MAYBE
Rumours of Nic Cage playing Spidey's nemesis The Green Goblin
continue to strengthen. Cage's publicist has said the star was
definitely interested in the part "and was talking to Raimi and the
producers about it". Now Sony's weekly newsletter has admitted Cage
is close to signing on the project opposite Tobey Maguire as the
web-slinging hero.

KEVIN SMITH'S LATEST
Kevin Smith wowed the crowd at the Wizard World Con where he
revealed stuff about his upcoming fifth "Jay & Silent Bob" movie
currently titled "View Askew 5". Smith says "I'm sure he'll [Mewes]
be in it. I'll be in it. That's all we need, really. [laughter]
Jason Lee will be back. [Chris] Rock is coming back. Matty is
coming back. And Brian and Jeff [O'Halloran and Anderson; both from
Clerks] are coming back". Smith also confirms the 'open ending'
from "Chasing Amy" will be solved along with unanswered questions
from the three other films ("Clerks", "Mallrats" & "Dogma").
Production is scheduled to begin in October/November with the plan
to release Summer 2001.

SWORDFISH ADDITION
Vinnie Jones ("Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels") confirmed to The
Daily Mail that he's signed on to play the fourth lead role in the
new John Travolta/Hugh Jackman thriller "Swordfish" for an
estimated £2 million.

PARK NOT IN SWII
Ray Park finally confirmed at the Wizard World Con in Chicago that
he had not signed on for any part (on screen or off) in any of the
"Star Wars" sequels.

SPADE IS PETE
David Spade has agreed to star in the upcoming film Puka Pete, a
comedy about a hippie shipwrecked since the '60s attempting to
reintegrate with today's society. "Puka Pete is a hippie burnout
'60s peacenik who, while recording whale sounds in a rowboat, gets
swallowed by a whale and ends up washed up on a deserted island,"
Spade says. "As he watches the animals around him team up, he
realizes he'd like to find a mate and sends messages in bottles
that begin to be returned by prospective marital partners."

SPIELBERG DECIDES HE'S GOT BIGGER FISH
Though fans are clamoring for him to direct a fourth Indiana Jones
film, Steven Spielberg has signed on to direct a
comedy-fantasy-drama called Big Fish for Columbia and DreamWorks.
The film will tell the story of a man who is trying to understand
his dying father by piecing together a series of stories he's
gathered over the years, though some of them border on legend and
myth. In the end, he begins to understand the kind of person his
father was in both his triumphs and his failings. Plans are to
start up production on the project after filming on Minority Report
wraps, sometime in summer 2001.

FURLONG SIGNS ON TO T3
Edward Furlong will reprise the role of John Conner in Terminator
3. Furlong has signed onto the project that was spearheaded by
producers Mario Kassar and Andy Vajna and already had Arnold
Schwarzenegger attached. Though there is a shroud of secrecy over
the specifics of the film's story, Furlong's participation in the
project would seem to confirm previous word that the next film
would involve mankind's first conflict with Skynet..and perhaps
John Conner's place in the saga rising to prominence. At this time,
there is no word on Linda Hamilton's participation, though the
actress has publicly stated that she would not sign on without
Cameron helming. Robert Patrick's presence would seem to be
doubtful given his recent signing on The X-Files and perhaps
unnecessary given recent rumors that Arnold might be doing battle
with a female form Terminator in the next film. Current plans for
the film are to start production in early 2001.

A.I. CASTING
Kathryn Morris (The Contender) is the latest addition to the cast
of Steven Spielberg's A.I. The film also stars Jude Law, Frances
O'Connor, Haley Joel Osment, Adam Scott and Sam Robards. There's no
word on what part Morris will play.

PAXTON TO HELM
Bill Paxton (U-571, Twister, Titanic) is looking to make his
feature film directorial debut on a psychological horror-thriller
called Frailty. The Atlantic Streamline project will tell the story
of a single father of two boys in Texas who may or may not be able
to identify certain people as demons, which he kills. One of the
boys considers his father a hero while the other just thinks he's a
killer. Plans are to tell the film's story in a "non-linear style."
The trade reports that Matthew McConaughey is in serious
discussions to star in the project which has a script by Brent
Hanley. Production is expected to tart in early October.

TELEVISION
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

SURVIVOR REIGNS
Need further proof that Survivor fever is sweeping the nation? This
week's episode not only scored the show's highest ratings yet, but
also became CBS's most-watched telecast of the season, topping
February's Grammy Awards. According to final data, Wednesday's
installment, featuring Colleen's swan song, netted 28 million
viewers, up from 27.41 the previous week. And the contestants are
wasting no time cashing in on their newfound celebrity. Survivor
finalist - and possible winner - neurologist Sean Kenniff will
appear on Guiding Light for three episodes in September playing a
doctor, a show spokesperson confirms. Meanwhile, a UPN rep tells TV
Guide Online that Survivor exile Gervase Peterson will not be
playing himself when he guest-stars on The Hughleys this fall in an
episode that spoofs the reality show.

DOWNEY JR. TO WOO ALLY
Fresh out of prison on drug charges, Downey has been cast on Fox's
floundering David E. Kelley drama as Calista Flockhart's love
interest. The troubled actor will appear in eight episodes
beginning with the show's Oct. 23 season premiere. "David's a
genius, Calista's awesome, and once again, I have a choice of shirt
colors," joked Downey, who reportedly will pull in between $75,000
and $100,000 per episode.

ROSEANNE HEADS FOR ARBITRATION
Her talk show may have died a slow death, but Roseanne wants to
give syndication another try with a proposed game show that is a
cross between Divorce Court and Let's Make a Deal. The
comedian/actress would act as an arbitrator for estranged married
couples, who will play games to determine how their assets are
split up. Roseanne recently launched the Web site
RoseanneWorld.com.

THE RIGHT WING
The West Wing is moving to the right. The Emmy-nominated drama -
which conservative groups complain has a liberal bias - has added
Marlin Fitzwater, former press secretary to presidents Reagan and
Bush, and one-time Reagan administration speechwriter Peggy Noonan
to its roster of real-life political consultants. They join current
Democrat experts Lawrence O'Donnell, Dee Dee Myers and Patrick H.
Caddell. "We are thrilled to have Peggy and Marlin join the
series," said creator and executive producer Aaron Sorkin. "Their
political background and vast knowledge will be a wonderful
complement to our staff."

UPN AND BOYZ
Grammy-winning R&B group Boyz II Men will guest-star on each of
UPN's Monday night comedies - Moesha, The Parkers, The Hughleys and
Girlfriends - on Monday, Sept. 25.

NIKITA IS BACK
USA Network reportedly is in discussions to bring back the
syndicated series La Femme Nikita. No word and air dates yet.

GROOVY CAMEOS
Ultimate '70s icons Shirley Jones and Charo reportedly will make
cameo appearances on the Oct. 17 episode of Fox's That '70s Show.
