HANKS TEAMS WITH BEAUTY DIRECTOR
Tom Hanks is set to star in American Beauty director Sam Mendes's
next film, The Road to Perdition, based on the
1930s-era gangster novel. DreamWorks is producing the project,
which will start filming early next year. Hanks, last seen in The
Green Mile, won Oscars for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. Mendes
brought home the gold last March for helming Beauty.
LEONI IN PARK
Téa Leoni is in final talks to star in Jurassic Park III as William
H. Macy's love interest. The film is due out next summer.
IT'S A BOY!
Michael Douglas, 55, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, 30, welcomed son
Dylan Michael Douglas into the world on Tuesday in Los Angeles. The
new arrival - the first for Zeta-Jones and the second for Douglas
(he has a son, Cameron, from his first marriage to Diandra
Douglas) - tipped the scales at 7 pounds, 7 ounces. The couple are
engaged to be married, but a wedding date has not been set.
ANISTON SLAPS SKIN
Newlywed Jennifer Aniston is suing Celebrity Skin magazine for
running photos of her sunbathing topless in her backyard. The
actress, who says the photographer climbed a neighbor's fence to
snap the shots, is seeking unspecified damages.
ELIZABETH TAYLOR IN HOSPITAL
Poor Elizabeth Taylor can't seem to catch a break. The legendary
actress was admitted into a Los Angeles hospital last Friday for a
mild case of pneumonia. According to various reports, the
68-year-old, two-time Oscar winner likely will be released at the
end of the week. In recent years, Taylor has had both of her hips
replaced, suffered back problems and underwent surgery to remove a
brain tumor.
PALTROW: LIFE AFTER BRAD
Gwyneth Paltrow says that her breakup with Brad Pitt rocked her
world, and nothing has been the same since. "It really changed my
life," the Oscar winner tells the next Vanity Fair. "When we split
up, something changed permanently in me. My heart sort of broke
that day, and it will never be the same." Paltrow goes on to say
that she "loved every second [of the relationship], but it wasn't
healthy. I wouldn't change anything. Even the things I hate most
about myself for what happened - the darkest moment of it - I
wouldn't change. Because it's made me what I am."
OASIS CONCERT CRISIS
For the second time in two weeks, Brit pop band Oasis stormed off
stage during a concert after being pelted with objects by fans.
Drummer Alan White was struck in the shoulder by a rock during a
performance in Portugal. On June 26, Oasis walked off stage during
a Swiss music festival when they said concertgoers started throwing
bottles, cans and coins at them. At the time, organizers argued
that the incident was blown out of proportion and blamed singer
Liam Gallagher for inciting the crowd.
SPIDEY SPEAKS
A week after landing the role of Spider-Man in the upcoming
big-screen remake, Tobey Maguire already has been fitted for the
superhero's skintight suit. "They put some kinda grease on my body
and then layer after layer of this... stuff," the 25-year-old actor
tells Time. "When it hardens, they take it off, and it's a little
bit painful 'cause I have hair on my body." Maguire added that he
has yet to start pumping up for the part, saying, "Hey, I just got
this thing last Friday!" No word on who will join Maguire in the
Sam Raimi-directed comic-book caper, but Vincent D'Onofrio insists
he's not interested in sprouting mechanical limbs as Spider-Man's
formidable foe, Doc Octopus - despite growing fan support on the
Internet.
CULKIN HOME ALONE
They said it wouldn't last, and they were right. Macaulay Culkin
has separated from actress Rachel Miner after two years of
marriage. The 19-year-old Home Alone star met Miner, 20, in 1997 at
the Professional Children's School in New York. "It is very
amicable, and they remain the best of friends," Culkin's rep says.
TEENS CHOOSE FAVES
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Julia Roberts were crowned Choice Movie
Actor and Actress and The Sixth Sense was named Choice Movie at the
Teen Choice Awards, held this week in Santa Monica, CA. The
ceremony, which airs Aug. 22 on Fox, also featured awards for
Choice Comedy (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me), Choice
Chemistry (Courteney Cox-Arquette and David Arquette, Scream 3),
Choice Liar (Tom Green, Road Trip), Choice TV Actress (Sarah
Michelle Gellar, Buffy, the Vampire Slayer), Choice TV Actor
(Joshua Jackson, Dawson's Creek) and Male and Female Hottie of the
Year (Justin Timberlake of 'N Sync and Britney Spears).
BULLOCK NUDITY SHOCKER
Want to see Sandra Bullock buck naked and engaged in a very
explicit simulated sex act? Well, now's your chance! Fire on the
Amazon, a B-movie that the actress made prior to the 1994 release
of her breakthrough hit, Speed, has quietly made its way to video
store shelves across the country. The flick's debut had been
delayed because of a dispute over its rating. A sexed-down R
version and a soft-porn unrated version now are available on VHS
and DVD.
NBC ORDERS ICE-T
Rapper Ice-T, who raised hell for his 1992 song "Cop Killer," has
joined the cast of NBC's Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The
actor/musician will portray Det. Odafin Tutuola, a street-smart
veteran cop who partners with Richard Belzer's Det. John Munch.
This isn't the first time Ice-T has worked with Law & Order
executive producer Dick Wolf; he appeared on Wolf's late Fox drama
New York Undercover, NBC's short-lived series Players as well as
the network's TV-movie Exiled: A Law & Order Movie.
SIR ALEC GUINNESS DIES
Sir Alec Guinness, best known for his role as Star Wars's Obi-Wan
Kenobi, died over the weekend in England. He was 86. The British
actor won an Academy Award for the 1957 war picture The Bridge on
the River Kwai. Best wishes to his family friends.

JAN CARL FRONT-RUNNER FOR LIVE SEAT
Jan Carl has served as Regis Philbin's guest co-host on Live With
Regis for two consecutive days, leading to talk that the
Entertainment Tonight hostess is a front-runner to permanently
succeed Kathie Lee Gifford. "Nobody's been on more than Jan Carl,"
Philbin joked on today's Live. "[She's] wanting this job so bad she
can taste it." Carl was not about to argue the point. "I really
want the show," she confirmed. A Live spokesperson had not returned
our calls at press time.
BRAVE NEW WORLD
Producers of MTV's pioneering reality show, The Real World, are
considering setting up shop next season in Harlem. The famous
Manhattan neighborhood - currently enjoying a major renaissance -
is one of several locales said to be under consideration. Other
finalists reportedly include Toronto, Vancouver, Australia, France,
the Caribbean and Las Vegas.
VARIOUS TV
It's becoming increasingly obvious that tonight's new
"houseguest" on CBS's Big Brother will have four legs and a tail.
"Everybody will find out on tonight's show," a CBS rep teases....
ABC is seeking contestants for its new reality show, The Mole,
which follows 10 individuals (one of whom is a mole) as they
complete a series of difficult tasks. To apply, log onto the ABC
web site.... How bad did NBC do in the ratings last week? On
Sunday, the network was beaten by TBS! NBC's final installment of
The 10th Kingdom placed behind TBS's premiere of the Oscar-winning
film As Good as It Gets, which became the highest-rated movie in
basic cable history.
SURVIVOR BITES
The remaining Survivor castaways may want to think twice before
voting off Kelly Wiglesworth. The 23-year-old nature guide, who is
wanted in Greensboro, NC, for credit-card fraud, was arrested in
1997 for biting her husband. Wiglesworth was charged with "battery
domestic violence" for allegedly biting the nose of then-husband
Jay Geary because he lost the house keys. The charges were dropped
and the couple later divorced. A Survivor rep, who says producers
were aware of the arrest, says: "During her time on the island, she
never bit anyone, not even a rat." Wiglesworth is one of six
contestants left on Survivor.
WEST WINS AGAIN
NBC's The West Wing, nominated for 18 Emmys, racked up more honors
yesterday when Viewers for Quality Television named it TV's best
quality drama, and its stars, Martin Sheen and John Spencer, best
actor and supporting actor respectively. CBS's Everybody Loves
Raymond nearly swept the comedy field, winning best quality comedy
for the second year in a row, best actor in a comedy (Ray Romano),
best actress in a comedy (Patricia Heaton) and best supporting
actress in a comedy (Doris Roberts). Other winners include Once and
Again's Sela Ward (best actress in a drama), Judging Amy's Tyne
Daly (best supporting actress in a drama) and Frasier's David Hyde
Pierce (best supporting actor in a comedy). Buffy the Vampire
Slayer, meanwhile, was the recipient of the annual Founders Award,
given to an overlooked show.
ABC EATS ITS WORDS
ABC is admitting that a controversial 20/20 report by John Stossel
that claimed organic foods contain the same levels of pesticides as
conventional foods was incorrect. As a result, Stossel - whose
producer reportedly is being blamed for the oversight - will take
to the airwaves on Friday's 20/20 to issue an apology. The
Environmental Working Group (EWG), which lodged the protest back in
February when the report first aired, is calling for Stossel's job.
"I think the producer is the scapegoat who Stossel is trying to set
up, and we don't buy it," EWG president Ken Cook said.
D'ONOFRIO ON THE SOPRANOS
Character actor Vincent D'Onofrio (Men in Black) was in serious
talks to join HBO's mob drama The Sopranos next season in a pivotal
role, but he says that a final deal never materialized. "It's
something that they're going to do in the next two years and
they're looking for somebody to do it and it's not going to be me,"
says D'Onofrio, who was approached by executive producer David
Chase. "I'm not really allowed to talk about it, [but] I was into
it. I'm not opposed to doing television, and The Sopranos is one of
the best written things that's ever been on. It's a fantastic
show." An HBO rep was unavailable for comment at press time.
D'Onofrio next appears as a deranged serial killer opposite
Jennifer Lopez in The Cell (see above).

5. MOVIE REVIEW - ** Minor Spoilers **
================================================
HOLLOW MAN - Kevin Bacon, Elisabeth Shue, Josh Brolin
Every once in awhile a movie will come around where the previews
and trailers get you to see the movie and you leave the theater
thinking they should have paid you to see the film. Well, sadly,
that happened for me when I went to Hollow Man. The previews had
me drooling to see the movie and I was severely let down. The
special effects were awesome, but I don't need to see 10 versions
of the same effect. The film had a plot, sort of, but it didn't
really explain why Bacon goes on his rampage. We're supposed to
believe he becomes homicidal because the same thing happened to an
ape and his ex-girlfriend finds a new man. Bacon starts the film
as a power-hungry egomaniac and we're supposed to believe that he
wants to remain invisible because of the 'power' connected to what
he could do if he stayed invisible. I might have gone along with
that, except that they don't show anything, other than raping his
beautiful neighbor, that would make me believe he would like life
more if no one could see him. I was also kind of upset that the
only person to become invisible was a man. But after thinking
about it, a man would have a blast if no one could see him...going
to women's homes to see them naked, stealing beer from friend's
refrigerators, going to ballgames and not paying to get in. Fellow
women would be bored to tears if we could be invisible. Seriously,
how many women would want to be invisible just to see naked men. I
don't know...the whole concept of the film just rubbed me wrong.
But I can say one good thing about the movie...at least now I have
a direct link from Kevin Bacon to Elisabeth Shue in the 6 Degrees
of Kevin Bacon game.
