3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================
SOURCE AT PARAMOUNT SAYS AFFLECK IS IN
My source at Paramount has informed me that Ben Affleck has been
signed to play Jack Ryan in The Sum of All Fears. When I reminded
him that he told me that Affleck wasn't going to be cast, this is
what he told me..."The decision was made against the advice of
almost everyone who makes casting decisions for Paramount. Our
marketing department feels that Ben could bring a younger, fresh
audience to the series, thus increasing ticket sales." So
basically, Affleck was hired to bring in more money. He went on to
say that Affleck was the ONLY actor approached who liked the
script...every other actor turned it down sighting various reasons.
These other actors included Harrison Ford, Michael Douglas, Tommy
Lee Jones, and Bill Pullman. My source continued saying, "Someone
has already leaked the casting information and since that time
we've had hundreds of emails, letters, and phone calls trying to
get us to change our minds. Unfortunately, the contracts are
signed and Ben will now be Jack. The shooting should begin in a
couple of months after Ben finishes his commitments with Pearl
Harbor." He personally apologized for a decision that he knows
will destroy the series for a lot of fans, myself included. I
pointed out to him that with Affleck signing on to so many
projects, audiences are going to get tired of him long before Sum
is even in theaters, which in the long run, would kill any chance
for a successful film. He agreed with me, but said that it's a
done deal. Looks like Clear and Present Danger is the last Tom
Clancy movie I'll see. Yet another great franchise possibility
shot down for better box-office receipts.
SIMON POSTS BAIL
Singer Carly Simon posted $250,000 bail last week for one of her
backup singers after his arrest at Newark International Airport on
cocaine charges. John Forte was charged July 13 with conspiring to
distribute nearly 31 pounds of cocaine. Prosecutors say they have
taped telephone conversations in which Forte, 25, referred to the
cocaine as "ice cream" and arranged to pick up the shipment at the
airport. Federal agents arrested him after he was handed a suitcase
by two women, authorities said. Forte was charged with conspiracy
to distribute the cocaine. A federal magistrate set bail for Forte
at $625,000 and Simon posted $250,000 of it.
ACTORS START THEIR FAST
Five actors have started a fast to publicize their cause in the
14-week-old strike against the advertising industry. "This is not
about martyrdom or starvation, it's about education and inspiration
for all members of the union," said James Arone, a member of the
Screen Actors Guild. Arone and four other union members will not
eat solid foods during the fast, although other union members may
replace them in the protest. The fast will continue until a
contract agreement is reached, union officials said.
DOWNEY OUT OF JAIL, INTO REHAB
Actor Robert Downey Jr. checked into a residential drug treatment
facility as part of a "self-imposed recovery program" after his
release from prison, his lawyer said Thursday. Attorney Robert
Waters said Downey decided to return to Walden House, a facility
where he had lived previously while trying to fight his drug
addiction. Before he went to jail, Downey spent 53 days in a drug
rehab center as part of a 15-month sentence for misdemeanor
convictions of driving under the influence, carrying an unloaded
weapon in his car and being under the influence.
NO DOUBT INJURIES
A crowd of 4,000 people rushed the stage at a No Doubt concert,
injuring five people who were crushed against a railing or
trampled. Three people at the Mesa Amphitheater show were
hospitalized in the suburban Phoenix city, said Mesa Fire Deputy
Battalion Chief Mary Cameli. None of the injuries was serious,
Cameli said. Three of the injured were minors, she said.
HUNT/AZARIA SPLIT
Oscar winner Helen Hunt and her husband of a year, Hank Azaria, are
on the verge of divorce. The couple no longer live together and
have been on the outs for months.
MORE HUNT
Helen Hunt has signed on to star with Woody Allen in the
actor/director's next film. Charlize Theron is slated to co-star.
HURLEY KISSES AND TELLS... AGAIN
Paging Dr. Ruth... A day after word leaked that Liz Hurley, in the
September issue of Jane magazine, called ex-lover Hugh Grant "less
than adequate" in the sack, the model/actress is clarifying her
remarks. "Hugh Grant is fantastic in bed - he always has been,"
Hurley told Britain's Sun tabloid. "The article makes me look
spiteful and nasty and I'm not." Regarding her quote that she got
annoyed when Grant would watch sports in bed, she said, "We don't
even have a television in our bedroom." So who gave the interview
to Jane? A Jane rep says: "We stand by our story." The couple ended
their 13-year relationship in May, but still share the same house
in London.
AFFLECK TO PLAY CINDERELLA
Ben Affleck is in "serious negotiations" to star in the film
Cinderella Man. The Depression-era pic tells the true story of an
average Joe who turns to boxing to feed his family and, as a
result, becomes a folk hero. Billy Bob Thornton is the leading
candidate to direct.
CARTER GOES APE
Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter will play the ape princess in
Tim Burton's upcoming remake of Planet of the Apes. She joins cast
members Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth and The Green Mile's Michael Clarke
Duncan. 20th Century Fox is hoping to have the film ready for
release next summer.
DMX TAKES FLIGHT
Rap artist DMX will star in the next installment of The Crow,
titled Lazarus. The hip-hopper, who appeared in the 1998 gangsta
drama Belly, will play a hard-core rap star who is murdered in a
drive-by shooting. He comes back from the dead to seek revenge on
the gang responsible for his murder
POSSIBLE MYERS SETTLEMENT
A settlement is imminent in the battle between Mike Myers and
Universal Pictures over the botched Dieter film. Myers - who was to
receive $20 million for taking his popular Saturday Night Live
character to the big screen - backed out citing problems with the
script. Universal and Imagine slapped the Austin Powers star with a
lawsuit, leading Myers to retaliate with a lawsuit of his own.
ANOTHER SCARY MOVIE
The demented minds behind Scary Movie are taking another stab at
spoofing the teen film genre with 10 Things I Hate About Clueless
Road Trips When I Can't Hardly Wait to Be Kissed. Phil Beauman and
Buddy Johnson, who wrote this summer's $122 million-grossing horror
spoof, sold the script to Columbia Pictures for a reported mid-six
figures.
GIRL FIGHT
A weekend performance of Sandra Bernhard's rollicking rock show,
Songs I Sang on the Kibbutz, attended by a barely recognizable
Roseanne, nearly turned into Friday Night at the Fights. During the
show, which has been playing to sold-out audiences at Manhattan's
Joe's Pub, a table of young models - which included the new face of
Tommy Girl, Angela Lindvall - got into a shouting match with folks
at a nearby table who wanted them to pipe down. "Management
screamed repeatedly at both of them to sit back down," says an
onlooker. "It was extremely heated." When the scuffle spilled over
into the hallway, a shoving match ensued - leading Roseanne, decked
out in a crimped pink wig, to be ushered backstage out of harm's
way. All parties eventually came to their senses and no arrests
were made.

TELEVISION
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
WEB COMEDY = TV SHOW
In an example of how Internet companies and the entertainment
industry may collaborate in the future, a short animated series on
a Web site will become a half-hour, live-action show on a major
cable network. Showtime Networks Inc. has licensed "Starship
Regulars," a comedy series on the Web site Icebox.com. The show,
which will debut on the Web Aug. 11, will be turned into 13
live-action episodes for the cable network's 2001 season.
Icebox.com will become executive producer of the show and will
receive a portion of the revenue generated by the program. The
show's creator is Rob LaZebnick, one of Icebox.com's co-founders.
MOBSTER SINGS
Tony Soprano's mob boss "Uncle Junior" is about to sing. Dominic
Chianese, who plays Corrado Erico Soprano on HBO's hit series "The
Sopranos," was in a Franklin recording studio last weekend
recording his first album. "He is a fluty, pleasant tenor," said
Dino Elefante, co-owner of The Sound Kitchen. Elefante said the
album, which was recorded with studio musicians, includes
several standards like "Ramona" and "For the Good Times." Chianese
wrote three songs himself.
TODAY GETS A FLASH
A unidentified woman surprised "Today" show viewers - and host
Katie Couric - Wednesday morning by opening her shirt and baring
her breasts on the air. The flasher struck at about 8:30 a.m. as a
camera panned a crowd of tourists and passers-by gathered outside
the show's Rockefeller Center studio. "Today" quickly cut to Couric
at the Republican convention in Philadelphia, where she had been
watching on a monitor. She appeared slightly rattled, but didn't
mention the stunt. Only East Coast viewers, where the show is
broadcast live, caught the act.
TAB CLAIMS REGIS CHEATED
With Kathie Lee gone, it appears as if the tabloids have aimed
their bull's-eye at her seemingly scandal-free former co-host. The
National Enquirer is alleging that Regis Philbin carried on a
three-year affair with 39-year-old Notre Dame cheerleading coach
Maria Majerek. The rag prints what it says are excerpts from the
busty blonde's diary, as well as a copy of a supposed love note
that Philbin sent her. The article, which appears in next week's
issue, goes on to say that the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire host
would often complain to Majerek about his ex-Live partner, calling
her "extremely annoying." Philbin, who an Enquirer rep claims tried
to block the story from running, made no mention of the scandal on
this morning's Live. Philbin's spokesperson, meanwhile, continued
to have no comment.
NBC IN HOT WATER
Three NBC staffers have slapped the network with an $800 million
lawsuit, claiming racial and sexual harassment. One of the
plaintiffs, former Today show employee Gilbert Muro, says that he
overheard a senior news director make racist remarks about then
co-host Bryant Gumbel. Muro then moved to Late Night With Conan
O'Brien, where he says sexual harassment was rampant. NBC is
denying the charges.
WEST WING, RAYMOND TOPS WITH FAMILIES
NBC's White House drama The West Wing and CBS's comedy smash
Everybody Loves Raymond were the big winners at the second annual
Family Television Awards, presented Thursday in Beverly Hills. The
West Wing, nominated for 18 Emmy Awards, took the best drama prize
and Everybody Loves Raymond, up for nine Emmys, won best comedy
honors. Other winners include Spin City's Michael J. Fox as best
actor and Touched by an Angel's Della Reese as best actress. The
awards are presented by advertisers seeking to encourage the
development of family-friendly TV shows.
ABC ORDERS NEW ROOF
ABC is remaking Fiddler on the Roof into a three-hour Wonderful
World of Disney movie to possibly air during May sweeps. The
project is being produced by the same team behind the network's
acclaimed update of Annie, which scored 12 Emmy nominations.
SURVIVOR "WINNER" LOSES
In a stunning upset, basketball coach Gervase Peterson - considered
the favorite to go the distance and claim the $1 million prize -
got the heave-ho on Survivor last night in a landslide vote. Two
weeks ago, a cybersleuth in Ontario went public with his theory
that Gervase was the winner, citing a photo on CBS's official web
site that showed him as the only contestant without an X on his
face. Appearing on CBS's The Early Show, Peterson, who received
word that his fourth child had been born just prior to getting the
boot, admitted that he knew the end was near. "I was the biggest
threat," he told Bryant Gumbel, adding that his strategy all along
was "to do as little as possible, be friends with everybody, coast
through it, be nonthreatening and win." He then went on to trash
his fellow contestants, especially truck driver Sue. "I don't like
Sue," he said. "We didn't get along at all. She's very annoying."
He called Sean, who last night succumbed to peer pressure and
abandoned his alphabetical voting system, an "idiot. The guy was
clueless." And should fellow exile Jenna pose nude for Playboy?
"I'm buying extra copies!" Gervase admitted. The three-hour
Survivor finale airs Aug. 23.
VIEWERS TUNE OUT MILLER
Curiosity seekers didn't turn out to catch Dennis Miller's debut in
the Monday Night Football booth. Ratings for Monday night's
preseason opener were 28 percent lower than last year's debut.
Miller, who received mostly favorable reviews for his witty
commentary, shouldn't shoulder all the blame, however. One factor
likely contributing to the ratings decline was the earlier start
time; Monday's game kicked off an hour earlier due to ABC's
coverage of the Republican National Convention.
ABC WANTS MORE BARBARA
Barbara Walters is on the verge of signing a new contract with ABC
worth more than $12 million a year. If a deal is struck, the
68-year-old broadcasting legend would become the highest-paid
female personality after Oprah Winfrey. Walters, who in addition to
her duties on 20/20 and The View hosts numerous prime-time specials
for the network, met with CBS execs earlier this summer, fueling
speculation that she was considering jumping ship.
FREAKS AND GEEKS DUO RETURN
The creative team behind the gone-but-not-forgotten NBC drama
Freaks and Geeks are returning to television - this time on Fox.
Judd Apatow and Paul Feig have signed a deal to produce six
episodes of a new midseason comedy for Fox. Unlike Freaks and
Geeks, which took place in high school, the untitled sitcom will be
set on a college campus. "Freaks and Geeks was about the oppression
of high school," Apatow told Variety. "This is about the freedom of
college and what kids choose to do with it. This isn't about the
underdogs."
