3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================

LILO AND STITCH
Production on the new Disney animated feature, Lilo and Stitch, is
underway. Lilo tells the story of a little Hawaiian girl whose
adopted dog turns out to be an evil space alien. Voices will be
provided by Jason Scott Lee and Tia Carrere, with the film slotted
for a 2003 release. Lee will voice a muscular, tanned character who
sells surfboards. Carrere's voice will be heard as Lilo's sister.

ANISTON, PITT TIE THE KNOT
Well we gave you the scoop in last Wednesday's newsletter that
Aniston and Pitt may get married this weekend. It turnes out that
we were correct. After months of rumors, Brad Pitt and Jennifer
Aniston were married Saturday at a ceremony on an ocean bluff.
About 200 guests attended the lavish sunset ceremony at an estate
owned by television executive Marcy Carsey. The ceremony was
estimated at 1 million big ones.

MADONNA CONTROVERSY
Madonna is once again at odds with MTV over a controversial video.
The music network - which raised a ruckus when it cut racy scenes
from the Material Girl's 1990 "Justify My Love" video - may be
heading back to the editing room. Earlier this week, gossip
columnist Liz Smith reported that MTV feels that portions of
Madonna's video for her new single, "Music," objectifies the female
dancers because their heads were not shown while they danced.
Consequently, the network plans to digitally obscure areas of the
screen during several parts of the video. However, MTV chief Van
Toffler tells TV Guide Online that a final decision has not been
made. "Madonna submitted a video to us and we're taking a look at
it," he says. "But we haven't asked her to make changes to date."
Are there plans to? "I don't know. I'm not being cagey. Madonna has
an interesting way of getting stuff out there to get what she
wants. Have you noticed that?" A final verdict will have to be
reached soon; the video debuts Aug. 2.

'N SYNC TOPPLES BRITNEY
A live performance by boy band 'N Sync drew record crowds to New
York's Rockefeller Center this morning for the Today show's summer
concert series, besting previous record holder Britney Spears.

HUNTER RAISES A RACKET
Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter is in talks to play tennis great
Billie Jean King in an upcoming ABC movie-of-the-week to be
produced by Goldie Hawn. The telefilm, tentatively titled Battle of
the Sexes, will chronicle King's memorable 1973 face-off against
Bobby Riggs. It will air sometime next year.

HARRY POTTER BANNED
Not everyone is falling under the Harry Potter spell. Turned off by
the book's wizardry and magic themes, a New Zealand school has
banned teachers from reading excerpts from any of the four Potter
books to students, Reuters reports. The classmates can still read
the books on their own, however.

PINOCCHIO IS BEAUTIFUL
Oscar winner Roberto Benigni will star in Walt Disney's live-action
remake of Pinocchio. The picture also will star Benigni's wife and
Life Is Beautiful co-star, Nicoletta Braschi.

BRADY KID VS.EMINEM
Former Brady Bunch kid Barry Williams is hawking a new song parody,
"Real Greg Brady," based on Eminem's best-selling "Real Slim
Shady." Sample lyrics: "It was so much fun makin' that show for
you/and then writin' my book, too - tellin' who was dating who; it
was all TV, wasn't real, just play/back then we couldn't say that
the dad was really gay/or that my mom on TV was datin' me. Tee
hee!" If you're still interested, you can buy the CD single for $5
at barrywilliams.com.

HUPERT JOINS THE PIANIST
Isabelle Huppert and Jeanne Moreau have signed to star in 'The
Pianist', a drama to be directed by Austrian Michael Haneke.
Huppert will play a piano teacher at the Conservatory of Vienna
(Austria) whose suffocating existence with her aging mother leads
her to seek sexual stimulation through getting involved in
voyeurism, ducking into porn cinemas and hanging out in the
red-light district. When one of her students falls for her, the
relationship is, not surprisingly, twisted.

COCKBURN IN DUNDEE
Unknown 10-year-old Serge Cockburn has snared the role of Paul
Hogan's son Mikey in the upcoming 'Crocodile Dundee in L.A.'
Cockburn, who is the son of veteran Australian political journalist
George Negus, was chosen for the role after a weekend open casting
call in Sydney. The third film in the 'Crocodile Dundee' series,
which will also star Linda Kozlowski, begins principal photography
next month in Queensland's Warner Roadshow Movie World Studios,
with the shoot to be completed in Los Angeles. Paramount Pictures
plans to release the film in North America next April.

X-MAN TO MARS
X-Men babe Famke Janssen has stepped in to takeover Courteney
Love's role in the new John Carpenter flick 'Ghosts of Mars'. Love
had to pull out due to an ankle injury but there's talk she still
may cameo in the movie. Shooting has had to delay for two days til
Janssen completes work on another film.

DUNCAN JOINS APES
Oscar-nominated actor Michael Clarke Duncan (Green Mile, The Whole
Nine Yards) has signed on for Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes for
20th Century Fox, joining Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Paul Giamatti,
and Estella Warren. Duncan will play the role of an ape warrior and
second-in-command to Roth's character, a military ape commander who
believes humans are the inferior species. Burton's Apes is
described as a "reimagination" of the 1968 classic as opposed to a
simple remake. Written by William Broyles Jr., the film is being
produced by Richard Zanuck, with five-time Oscar winner Rick Baker
providing the special effects makeup for the project.

ELWES HAS NIGHT VISIONS
Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Liar Liar) is the latest name
hooking up with Fox's new supernatural series, Night Visions. Elwes
is contracted to star in an episode about a frantic city dweller
who escapes to the woods only to find the city follows him. Joe
Dante (Small Soldiers) will direct the episode, which co-stars
Brian Dennehy. Elwes joins a list of luminaries already attached to
the series that includes. Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Aidan Quinn,
and Gil Bellows.

JOLIE'S BORDERS
Angelina Jolie is currently getting in shape for her role as Lara
Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider film, but what comes after that?
Jolie is currently in negotiations to take the female lead opposite
Kevin Costner in Beyond Borders, directed by Oliver Stone. The part
originally belonged to Catherine Zeta-Jones, who dropped out due to
pregnancy. Meg Ryan was approached but negotiations seemed to have
stalled, leaving the door open for Jolie. Beyond Borders is a
romantic drama based on international relief workers.

TELEVISION
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

KATHIE LEE DEPARTS
Surrounded by friends and family - including her "love machine"
husband Frank and children Cody and Cassidy, Kathie Lee Gifford
ended her 15-year stint as co-host of Live! With Regis and Kathie
Lee Friday morning. It brought to a close what partner Regis
Philbin described as "the most relentless, exhausting farewell in
the history of television." The final episode included numerous
clip packages, taped good-byes from David Letterman, Rosie
O'Donnell, Susan Lucci and Howie Mandel, and a special appearance
by Disney chief Michael Eisner, who presented Gifford with a
"Mouscar Award" and a free family trip to Walt Disney World. Citing
Live's incredible ratings this week, Eisner then joked, "Maybe we
can do this for one more week." At the close of the hour, Philbin
serenaded Gifford with a touching song recounting their years
together.

SURVIVOR SURGES
During its 10th week on the air, Survivor racked up its highest
ratings to date, drawing more than 27 million viewers. The
spectacular performance helped boost its inferior sister show, Big
Brother, which also drew its largest audience since premiering in
early July. CBS moved Brother's live episode from Thursday to
Wednesday, hoping to capitalize on its strong Survivor lead-in.
Meanwhile, reports that NBC, which has been criticized for coming
late to the reality game, is this close to ordering 16 episodes of
Chains of Love, the controversial show in which a man or woman is
tied to four people of the opposite sex and releases them one by
one until she's left with his/her dream date. The trade paper also
reports that the Peacock Network may also order Booby Trap,
described as Candid Camera with a revenge twist.

GAY FLING ON NYPD BLUE
Bill Brochtrup's NYPD Blue character, gay office aide John Irvine,
may be getting a boyfriend this season. The actor's beefed-up role
comes amid reports that James McDaniel, who plays Lt. Fancy, is
departing at midseason to pursue other projects.

ANDERSON XTENDS
Gillian Anderson, whose Agent Scully character on The X-Files
learned that she was pregnant in last May's finale, has extended
her contract with the Fox drama through a potential ninth season
(or May 2002). Series creator Chris Carter recently announced that
he could see the show continuing beyond its upcoming eighth season
with or without Anderson and co-star David Duchovny, who will
appear in only 11 episodes this year. To fill the void, Terminator
2's Robert Patrick joins the cast in the Nov. 5 season premiere.

TWO SNL EXITS
Tim Meadows - who is joining the cast of NBC's Michael Richards
Show - isn't the only Saturday Night Live cast member calling it
quits. "Weekend Update" anchor Colin Quinn also won't return this
fall, opting instead to pursue a movie career. "Of course I'd like
to come back sometimes," Quinn told the Post. "We'll see what
happens." An SNL rep tells TV Guide Online: "We wish him all the
best." The spokesperson adds that Meadows may make a few
appearances this fall in conjunction with the Oct. 13 release of
his Ladies Man movie.

SPRINGER TV SHOW GUEST FOUND DEAD
A couple who went on "The Jerry Springer Show" to accuse the man's
ex-wife of stalking them are suspected of killing the ex-wife hours
after the show aired, authorities said. Ralf Jurgen Panitz and his
wife accused his former wife of stalking them during the episode
called "Secret Mistresses Confronted." All three appeared on the
program, which was taped in May and aired Monday. The body of Nancy
Campbell-Panitz was found shortly after the show was broadcast,
Sarasota police said. Investigators would not say how the
52-year-old was killed, but said the death was a homicide and they
are searching for Panitz and his wife, Eleanor Marie Panitz. The
body was found in a home that the three were fighting over.
