1.QUOTE OF THE WEEK
======================
Dr. Mainheimer: It's a terrible thing that has happened here. I do
hope you will find the people responsible.
Lt. Frank Drebin: I'm sorry I can't be more optimistic, Doctor, but
we've got a long road ahead of us. It's like having sex. It's a
painstaking and arduous task that seems to go on and on forever,
and just when you think things are going your way, nothing happens.

3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================
ANISTON & PITT TO WED
Brad Pitt and Emmy-nominated Friends star Jennifer Aniston are
scheduled to tie the knot next week in Los Angeles. Some 200 family
and friends will convene for the nuptials next weekend in Malibu.
BYE BYE BABS
Barbra Streisand is calling it quits, and this time the legendary
Funny Girl isn't joking around. Streisand's four September concert
dates will mark the 58-year-old diva's final live appearances.
"This is only part of her professional life she has decided to put
a stop to," Streisand's manager told USA Today. The Oscar winner -
who has had a long history of stage fright - will say good-bye to
her fans on Sept. 20 and 21 at Los Angeles's Staples Center and
Sept. 27 and 28 at New York's Madison Square Garden.
MYERS HIRES P.I.
The war between Mike Myers and Universal Pictures over the troubled
Dieter movie just got uglier. The Austin Powers star has hired
noted Tinseltown private investigator Anthony Pellicano to dig up
dirt on the enemy. Pellicano's celebrity clients have included
Michael Jackson, late producer Don Simpson and Kevin Costner, who
hired the spy when a woman claimed in a tabloid that she had an
affair with him.
HECHE TEAMS WITH DENZEL
Anne Heche is in final talks to co-star with Denzel Washington in
John Q. The New Line Cinema drama centers on a father (Washington)
who takes an emergency room hostage until doctors give his son a
life-saving heart transplant. Heche would play the by-the-book
hospital administrator who prevents the critical operation from
taking place. The cast also includes Kimberly Elise and Robert
Duvall.
JP3 NEWS
William H. Macy (Mystery Men, Fargo) is joining the cast of
Jurassic Park 3, playing a wealthy businessman.
FLOCKHART AND SHANDLING DATING
Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart is reportedly dating comedian
Garry Shandling. The couple were spotted having an intimate dinner
in Los Angeles.
MIKE AND THE MECHANICS TRAGEDY
Paul Young, the 53-year-old lead singer of the pop/rock group Mike
+ the Mechanics, died of an apparent heart attack in Britain.
Conflicting reports say the musician passed away either on Saturday
or Monday. "We are all shocked and devastated by Paul's death,"
said Mechanics member Mike Rutherford.
X-MEN DVD RELEASE DATE
Found out from Fox this week that the X-Men DVD will be released
November 21st.
THE INCREDIBLE HULK
Liz Hurley, whose next film is co-starring opposite Brendan Fraser
in "Bedazzled", will reteam with the actor in the upcoming $105.5
million-budgeted film version of "The Incredible Hulk" based on the
Marvel comic of the same name. Lou Ferrigno, the man who played the
hulk in the 1970's live-action TV series is also set to have a
part.
LOVE SITS ONE OUT
Courtney Love, due to star in the upcoming John Carpenter's Ghosts
of Mars, has injured her ankle and will have sit the movie out. A
tight production schedule that insists shooting begin August 8
means the rock singer turned actress will not have time to mend
before going in front of the camera. Ironically, Love injured her
ankle while training for the physical demands the movie will put
the star through. There is no word yet on Love's possible
replacement.
MORE INJURIES
Liam Neeson, still recuperating from a motorcycle accident, may
have to drop out of Martin Scorcese's Gangs of New York project.
Slated to appear in the role of Leonardo DiCaprio's father, the
film's backers are rumored to be uncertain about the actor's
ability to make the start of production scheduled for August 30.
Neeson was riding his Harley-Davison in upstate New York when he
hit a deer that suddenly leaped out into the road. Neeson suffered
a fractured pelvis as well as other injuries from the accident.
Reps for Scorcese are reportedly optimistic about the star's
chances to make the film, but are also quick to point out that
Neeson has not yet actually been signed for the film.
GIBSON VS CROWE
Director Wolfgang Petersen is currently developing a feature film
project titled Endurance. Based on the story of British explorer
Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led a group of adventurers to safety
during a failed Antarctic exploration in 1914, the script has to
date gone through several revisions. "Mel [Gibson] is very
interested. We've had a couple of conversations about it," Petersen
says. Mel Gibson agrees, saying: "It's a good story." But Wolfgang
has other options. "Mel would be great," he says, "but now there's
also Russell Crowe."
LINDO TO HEIST
Delroy Lindo has joined the cast of David Mamet's The Heist, which
also features Gene Hackman, Danny DeVito, Sam Rockwell, and Rebecca
Pidgeon. Written and directed by Mamet, the film tells the story of
a gang of jewel thieves who get together to pull the biggest heist
of their careers.
JAZZY ALLISON TO SCORE
Jazz great Mose Allison has joined the cast of The Score and is set
to share the big screen with Robert DeNiro, Marlon Brando, and
Edward Norton. The Score tells the story of a young thief (Norton)
who blackmails a retired thief (DeNiro) into pulling off one more
score. Alison will play the part he knows best, that of a piano
player and singer that works in a nightclub owned by the DeNiro
character.
JULY 4, 2001 MOVIE RELEASES
The battle over the pivotal July 4th release spot in 2001 is
already heating up with the announcement that Steven Spielberg's
A.I. will premiere on June 29. As current schedules stand A.I. will
be facing off against The Johnson Five, a New Line comedy starring
Adam Sandler, and Wind Talkers, the John Woo World War II flick
starring Nicolas Cage. Other major features scheduled for next May
and June include Pearl Harbor, The Mummy Returns, and Tomb Raider.
BRYAN SINGER NOT SET FOR X2
X-Men producer Tom DeSanto revealed that at this time Bryan Singer
is not signed to helm a sequel. The entire cast from the first
X-Men has already been confirmed to star in the sequel, but that's
not a big surprise since they had to agreed to the sequel in order
to get their parts for the first film. In more X news, The Gambit
character will be added to the sequel, but casting has not yet
begun for the role.

X-FILES MEETS TERMINATOR
Terminator 2 cyborg Robert Patrick is joining the cast this season
to fill the void left by Duchovny - who will appear in only 11
episodes. "I think that there's a terrific opportunity,
particularly now that Robert Patrick is aboard," creator Chris
Carter told reporters recently.
FIRST BROTHER CUT
William - the 27-year-old youth counselor with ties to hatemonger
Khalid Abdul Muhammad - was the first housemate kicked out on CBS's
Big Brother last night. Viewers picked William over Jordan, the
other participant nominated for ouster, by a margin of nearly 3-1.
When host Julie Chen asked why he caused so much trouble in the
house (among his high crimes: he rearranged furniture, saying it
was a challenge created by Big Brother), the rebel replied: "I was
going crazy with the boringness." Hey, think about how we feel.
GOODBYE TO KATHIE LEE
After Kathie Lee Gifford bids farewell to viewers next week, Live!
With Regis & Kathie Lee will be retitled Live With Regis. And,
according to executive producer Michael Gelman, the show will
unveil a new set and update graphics in September. "These are not
radical changes, just sprucing up things," Gelman told the News.
Live, which has yet to decide on a permanent replacement for
Gifford, will go with rotating guest hosts in the meantime.
FAMILY GUY RETURNS
Reports that Fox has canceled Family Guy are simply not true, said
the network's new exec, Gail Berman, at the TCA press tour. "I like
the show and where the show is going creatively," said Berman, who
has ordered an additional 13 episodes of the animated series.
MORE ANIMATION
In other Fox animation news: Edward Norton, Michael Keaton, Drew
Barrymore and Stephen King will lend their voices to The Simpsons
next season; King of the Hill's lineup will include guests Lisa
Kudrow, Brendan Fraser, Snoop Dogg and former Texas Gov. Ann
Richards.
FOX GETS REAL
The producers behind MTV's The Real World and ABC's Making the Band
are casting a new Fox reality series, Singles Cruise, that will
follow the romantic interactions of 16 singles on a cruise ship.

EMMY HONORS WEST WING, WILL & GRACE AND BUFFY
NBC's freshman White House drama The West Wing won the equivalent
of a major political primary this morning, nabbing 18 Emmy
nominations, tying HBO's mob drama The Sopranos as Emmy's most
nominated series. In addition to vying for the Outstanding Drama
Series prize, West Wing cast members singled out include Lead Actor
Martin Sheen and supporting players Richard Schiff, John Spencer,
Stockard Channing and Allison Janney. The Peacock Network was also
recognized for Will & Grace's 11 nominations, including nods for
its four performers. Also on the comedy side, HBO's Sex and the
City seduced voters, nailing down nine nods including one for star
Sarah Jessica Parker. WB's critically acclaimed yet criminally
ignored Buffy the Vampire Slayer won its first major nomination for
Drama Series Writing. Other notable nominees: Friends star Jennifer
Aniston (who'll compete with co-star and previous winner Lisa
Kudrow), Once and Again's Sela Ward, late Sopranos actress Nancy
Marchand, Malcolm in the Middle leading lady Jane Kaczmarek and
Everybody Loves Raymond co-star Brad Garrett - who last year was
the only member of the show's cast to get snubbed. Leading the list
of notable omissions was Fox's rapidly declining Ally McBeal, which
after taking home the Comedy Series prize in '99, received just one
major nomination (for Supporting Actor Peter MacNicol). Also absent
from the list were Friend's Courteney Cox Arquette, the entire cast
of Buffy as well as the canceled Freaks and Geeks, The Practice's
Dylan McDermott, Once and Again's Billy Campbell, The West Wing's
Bradley Whitford and NYPD Blue in the Drama category.
MORE ANISTON
Accusations are flying that Jennifer Aniston was not nominated for
her performance on Friends this season, but instead was nominated
so that her fiancée, Brad Pitt, would be in attendance thus
insuring high TV viewing for the awards telecast.
NBC ANNOUNCEMENTS
Saturday Night Live will air a two-hour prime-time special on the
eve of the November elections, NBC announced at the Television
Critics Association press tour. Dubbed a "Presidential Bash," the
election-themed show will air on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 9 pm/ET. In
other press tour news, Conan O'Brien will return to Los Angeles for
another week this fall, Tim Meadows and William Devane have joined
the cast of the retooled Michael Richards Show, and a two-hour
wrap-up of the now-canceled drama The Pretender was scrapped when
cable's TNT secured rights to a series of Pretender movies.
