3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================
SMITS GOES TO WAR
Former NYPD Blue star Jimmy Smits has joined the cast of the next
Star Wars prequel, due out in summer 2002. Smits will play Sen.
Bail Organa of Alderaan, the foster father of Princess Leia.
ARNOLD PICS CREATE STIR
Arnold Schwarzenegger bared all in front of his family at the
Kennedy compound in Hyannisport, MA, over the Fourth of July
weekend - and Friday's New York Post has the pics to prove it. The
Terminator star stripped off his swimming trunks and dried off in
the open air as several amused kids "squealed in delight" at the
sight.
STERN LINKED TO CAT KILLER
Police investigating a rash of cat killings and mutilations in
Hawthorne, CA, say they think shockjock Howard Stern can help them
solve the crimes. Detectives are reportedly trying to get a tape of
a June 22 phone call to Stern's show in which a caller described
how he took delight in killing cats.
ROCK LEGENDS SQUABBLE
Aging rockers Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Little Richard have
barely said a word to each other on their current Legends of Rock
'n' Roll Tour. "You've never seen three men hate each other so
much," one unnamed source told a London newspaper.
MORE TROUBLES FOR JAN-MICHAEL
Troubled former Airwolf star Jan-Michael Vincent is facing trial
Sept. 14 in Los Angeles for alleged probation violations stemming
from a public drunkenness arrest in January. The 55-year-old actor,
who has been on probation for three public drunkenness incidents in
L.A. last year, posted bail after a hearing Tuesday.
GRIFFITH WANTS A BABY
Melanie Griffith tells Ladies' Home Journal that she and hubby
Antonio Banderas are working hard at trying to have a second baby.
"I've been taking shots of fertility drugs for three months," says
the 43-year-old actress. Any truth to those rumors of her jealousy
over Banderas shooting a new movie with Angelina Jolie? "She may
get him in bed for eight hours on a movie set, but I get him in bed
every day," she says.
SCARY THOUGHT OF THE DAY
Legendary wrestler Stan "Killer" Kowalski, 74, has thrown his hat
into the political ring as a candidate for the Minnesota State
Legislature. "The real people will support me," says Kowalski,
hoping to follow in the footsteps of Minnesota Gov. Jesse "The
Body" Ventura.
'INSIDER' WRITERS GET HUMANITAS NOD
The screenwriters of "The Insider" and "Love and Basketball" have
been honored with the Humanitas Prize, which recognizes movies and
TV shows that enrich the human spirit. "Tuesdays with Morrie," the
TV movie based on the nonfiction book about a dying professor and
his former student, also was recognized at Wednesday's ceremony.
The Human Family Educational and Cultural Institute founded the
cash awards in 1974 that now range from $10,000 to $25,000 and are
funded by an entertainment-industry supported endowment.
JANE SEYMOUR HONORED BY QUEEN
Self-described "British export" Jane Seymour had a homecoming to
relish Thursday when she was named an Officer of the Order of the
British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Seymour was honored by the
queen at a Buckingham Palace ceremony, then celebrated with a spin
on the giant new Millennium Wheel and a boat party on the Thames.
"This will be a day to remember," said the star of the U.S.
television show "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman." "Having spent as much
time as I have abroad - but always loving England - it was very
special to be honored by my own country and especially by the
queen," said the actress, who has homes in Bath, England, and in
Malibu, Calif. "I have always thought that I was in some way a
British export," she added.
YOKO ONO SUES OVER LENNON PORTRAIT
Yoko Ono has sued a Tokyo subway operator Thursday over prepaid
passes showing a portrait of her late husband, John Lennon. The
singer-artist claims copyright infringement and is seeking $120,000
from the Teito Rapid Transit Authority. The Andy Warhol portrait
was used on a 1,000 yen ($9.24) transit card. Teito said it had
permission from a local museum that staged a Warhol exhibit and
paid nothing in exchange for promoting the show.
KODAK MAY BUY OSCAR THEATER NAME
Eastman Kodak Co. has purchased naming rights to a new Hollywood
Boulevard theater that will be the permanent home of the Academy
Awards. Terms of the pact, the largest sale of name rights for a
non-sports venue, were not released but a source with knowledge of
the deal said Wednesday that the company will pay about $75 million
over 20 years. The agreement provides important funding for a $567
million hotel and commercial redevelopment project that city
officials hope will dramatically improve Hollywood. The Kodak
Theatre is scheduled to open late next year and play host to its
first Oscar ceremony in 2002.
JEWELER SUES MICHAEL JACKSON
A Beverly Hills jewelry store is suing Michael Jackson for more
than $1.4 million, claiming he agreed to buy a rare diamond watch,
used it for nearly four months without paying for it, then returned
it damaged. The lawsuit claims that Jackson made a verbal agreement
in December with Rodeo Drive retailer David Orgell to purchase the
King Kalla Vacheron Constantine watch originally valued at $1.9
million, reduced by $450,000 through bartering. The suit, filed
Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court in Santa Monica, also
seeks $15,000 owed on other items purchased at the store this year.
Jackson spokesman Howard Rubenstein said Tuesday that the singer
never made a final decision to purchase the watch.
COMEDIAN 'J.J.' WALKER IN ACCIDENT
Comedian Jimmie "J.J." Walker's vehicle swerved into another car as
he drove to a gig, sending the other driver and a passenger to a
local hospital with minor injuries. Walker was unhurt. Walker, 53,
starred in the 1970s CBS sitcom "Good Times" and is known for his
signature line, "Dyn-o-mite!" According to a police report, he was
driving to a performance in Long Beach Island on Tuesday when his
vehicle swerved into the opposite lane and onto the shoulder, where
it collided with another vehicle. Walker said he was reaching for
something in his vehicle, police said. Walker, who lives in Las
Vegas, was cited for failure to maintain his lane, police said. The
other driver, 60-year-old Florence Widman of Ocean Township, was
hospitalized for chest and lower back pain. A passenger in her car,
George Micken of Manchester, was treated for an abrasion on his
elbow.
FREDDY VS JASON
Rumors are abound on the status that Freddy Vs Jason is finally
being made. Production is set to start December 16th and probably
will be released in October of next year. Neither Lisa Wilcox or
Heather Langenkamp will be in it.
DAREDEVIL TALK
Fresh from his success with "Shaft", Director John Singleton talked
with Comics Contiuum the other night and was asked whether he'd
like to do any movies based on the Marvel superhero comics.
Singleton responded: "I'd love to do the Daredevil movie...I really
wanted to do Luke Cage, but somebody else has the rights".
TICKER INFO
Steven Seagal has just finished shooting a new movie opposite
Dennis Hopper & Tom Sizemore entitled "Ticker". Seagal plays the
captain of an inner city bomb squad who shepherds a rogue cop
through the toughest assignment of his career.
GREG GETS ANIMAL
Greg Kinnear is set to star opposite Ashley Judd in the comedy
Animal Husbandry. Based on the novel by Laura Zigman, Judd plays a
woman who develops a theory about men and women based on the animal
world and tries to apply it to her own romantic situation. Kinnear
plays her boyfriend, Aussie actor Hugh Jackman stars as her
roommate who longs for an old girlfriend.
TOWNSEND COULD BE LESTAT
Stuart Townsend (Wonderland) is in talks to take on the role of the
vampire Lestat in Warner Bros.' Queen of the Damned project. The
film, which also stars singer turned actress Aaliyah as the title
creature, combines elements from Anne Rice's Queen of the Damned
and The Vampire Lestat books. Filming is scheduled to start in
September with Michael Rymer (In Too Deep) directing.
ROBARDS JOINS A.I.
Sam Robards has joined the cast of Steven Spielberg's A.I. Robards
will play the part of husband to Frances O'Connor and father to
Haley Joel Osment's robotic kid. The film starts shooting in the
fall to make a summer 2001 release. The film will also stars Jude
Law.
CRUISE CONSIDERED FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA
Marvel's Avi Arad recently spoke of the Captain America project,
saying, "First, we have to do the script, and then we will send it
to him." Arad adds, "We don't want to go with an unknown. Captain
America is too visible a character. It's definitely going to be
someone high profile." At one time, Tom Cruise was reported to have
been interested in donning the yellow and gold armor of Iron Man as
well in a project that would be produced under his production
banner. That, apparently, fell through a long time ago.

BROTHER'S GOT A SECRET
Another skeleton has turned up in one of the closets inside CBS's
Big Brother compound, and it belongs to 27-year-old housemate
William Collins. Collins is a follower of noted hatemonger Khalid
Abdul Muhammad. This revelation comes a day after it was revealed
that another housemate, George, shot and killed a man while on a
hunting trip 12 years ago.
OSCAR WINNER IN ORDER
NBC's durable crime drama Law & Order is undergoing yet another
cast change. Dianne Wiest - who won supporting actress Oscars for
her roles in Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters and Bullets Over
Broadway - has inked a deal to play the new district attorney,
replacing Steven Hill, the show's last original cast member. Hill's
character reportedly will be voted out of office next season.
SPIELBERG DRAMA GETS GREEN LIGHT
Semper Fi, the troubled NBC military drama from producer Steven
Spielberg, will go into production this fall for a tentative
midseason debut. The highly-touted DreamWorks series - which nearly
was reduced to a two-hour TV-movie after being felled by a slew of
production hurdles - stars Scott Bairstow (Party of Five), Sharon
Exler (10 Things I Hate About You) and Steve Burton (General
Hospital).
A SCARY DEAL
NBC has landed television rights to the surprise summer sleeper
hit, Scary Movie. The Keenan Ivory Wayans-directed comedy - which
grossed a record-busting $42.3 million during its opening weekend -
will debut on the small screen in 2003.
PROFILER RERUNS FIND HOME
Court TV plans to air prime-time reruns of recently canceled NBC
drama Profiler beginning Sept. 18. The cable network in September
also debuts a new original documentary series called Forensic
Files. No word yet on a time slot for Forensic.
LATER TODAY BITES THE DUST
NBC will say goodbye Aug. 11 to low-rated gabfest Later Today after
about a year of telecasts. One of the show's three anchors, former
Brady Bunch mom Florence Henderson, might resurface on NBC's
soon-to-be-expanded Today.
BATMAN IS BACK
Adam West, star of the hit 1960s series Batman, has signed on to
play bad guy Breathtaker on the upcoming Sci Fi Channel series
Black Scorpion. The campy action series will also star former Miss
Kansas Michelle Lintel as sexy crime fighter Black Scorpion along
with 17 Playboy and Penthouse models and recurring villains Slave
Master (Lou Ferrigno), Professor Prophet (Soupy Sales), Dr. Praktus
(Charles Fleischer), Clockwise (Frank Gorshin) and Greenthumb
(David Landers). Legendary indie producer Roger Corman is
overseeing the bizarro project.
