I had a spelling error in the last newsletter and a wonderful
subscriber pointed it out to me, so in an attempt to redeem myself
"segue" is not spelled "segway." For those of you who didn't
notice, you are feeling very sleepy and when you wake up you will
not remember I mentioned this.

Hey anyone out there have a favorite movie quote? Why not share it
with us? Send it to me and I'll post it below! Enough from me, have
a great week and we will see you Wednesday..

SUM DOES NOT EQUAL AFFLECK
I found out through Paramount on Friday that Ben Affleck will not
be Jack Ryan in the new Tom Clancy flick Sum of All Fears. A
Paramount spokesman told me in an email that Ben was considered for
the role because they wanted a fresh approach to Ryan, but decided
to hold true to the original feel of the books. I also asked if
Harrison Ford would still be Ryan and was told that "Harrison's
schedule might not allow him to work in the film, but we continue
to hope for a break that would make it possible for him to return."
I also asked that if Harrison was unavailable, who else were they
looking to. The spokesman replied, "At this point, we are looking
for someone who fits the mold that was established in the first
three films. Michael Douglas has been considered as a possible
choice, but has not been approached for the role at this time."
The spokesman went on to thank me for my interest in the series and
joked that if I have any ideas for actors to let him know. Now we
can all breathe a little easier that Affleck is not Ryan.

SPIKE LEE SLAMS PATRIOT
Director Spike Lee called Mel Gibson's Revolutionary War epic The
Patriot "a complete whitewashing of history" in an angry letter to
The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday. "For three hours, The Patriot
dodged around, skirted about or completely ignored slavery," wrote
Lee. "The Patriot is pure, blatant American Hollywood propaganda.
While holding myself back from shouting at the screen, I kept
wondering 'Where are the slaves? Who's picking the cotton?'" Ok,
Spike and I must have seen completely different versions of the
same film. I could have sworn that one of the leading characters
in the movie was a slave who was fighting with the Colonial Army
for twelve months to gain his freedom.

STING GETS ANIMATED
Sting wrote six songs for the film The Emperor's New Groove which
at the time was entitled "Kingdom of the Sun" - then everything
changed (characters, script, director, title) and all the songs had
to be chucked - he then wrote two songs for 'Emperor'. Throughout
the time though his wife Trudie Styler filmed a documentary about
the creation of the movie entitled "The Sweat Box", a doco which
will be the only place you'll be able to hear some of those chucked
six songs Sting did - "It is quite dramatic, because everything
falls apart. And then it comes back together again. Some of those
songs will appear in the making-of movie".

DAVIS IN ATLANTIS
Hope Davis (Arlington Road, NBC's Deadline) is on the verge of
signing on to take the female lead role in the big screen version
of Stephen King's Hearts of Atlantis. Davis will play the mother to
an eleven year old boy whose father is dead. Their lives are
changed by an older man (played by Anthony Hopkins) who rents a
room in their house and happens to have psychic abilities.

CRUISE TALKS MINORITY
While promoting Mission: Impossible 2 in the UK, Tom Cruise is
sounding like his next big project will be the much delayed
Minority Report with Steven Spielberg. On the Big Breakfast BBC 4
morning program this week, Cruise revealed, "I left my whole
schedule open, so when Steven's ready we'll begin. At the moment
I'm scheduled to go to New York to begin shooting in April of next
year. So until then I'm going to enjoy being a father." Regarding
what the film is about, Cruise said, "Big monumental sci-fi stuff.
The guy who wrote it was the brains behind things like Blade
Runner, Total Recall. And I never really delved into the sci-fi
genre before. And plus to work with someone like Steven, you know
speaks for itself. The man is a master of his craft, so without
even shooting a single scene, I know the film is going to be
great." Cruise also revealed that the film will hit theaters in
Summer 2002, adding with a joke, "So watch out, George Lucas."

HAAS GETS DEAD
Lukas Haas (Mars Attacks) has signed on to star in a horror
thriller called Long Time Dead. The Universal Focus/Working Title 2
project will tell the story of a young man living in London who
seem to trigger a chain of mysterious deaths after a séance using
an Ouija board. Brit Marcus Adams will make his feature directing
debut on the project.

MYERS HARASSED BY "THUG"
Mike Myers says Universal initially seemed "very understanding"
about his decision to back out of the movie Dieter and was later
surprised to discover a "thug" summons server in his driveway.
Myers says the server chased he and his wife, Robin, into their
house and then screamed into their intercom, "I know Mike Myers
lives here." Both Universal and Imagine Entertainment are suing the
former Saturday Night Live funnyman for pulling out of the comedy
last month.

ROSIE PEREZ'S MOM DYING OF AIDS
Rosie Perez's mom, 60-year-old Lydia, revealed to the New York
Daily News that she is suffering from AIDS and that her actress
daughter refuses to return her phone calls. "Please tell her I'm
dying and I just want to see her one more time," says Lydia, who is
living in a NYC public housing project. The actress issued a
statement through her publicist: "As a strong AIDS activist, I have
pleaded with my mother to accept my assistance through whatever
connections I have within the AIDS community and medical community;
she has refused it. I have also offered her financial assistance,
which was accepted. While it is accurate to say she is not the
woman who raised me and we are somewhat estranged, I have always
wished for her the best help and continue to offer my support."

DAN RATHER IN COURT
Veteran CBS News anchor Dan Rather has been selected to serve as a
juror in a Manhattan civil court case involving Citicorp. "I think
that it's an important privilege, as well as a responsibility for
every citizen," he said after being picked from the jury pool on
Thursday.

BOBBY BROWN SET FREE
Singer Bobby Brown was released from a Pompano Beach, FL, jail
Friday morning after serving time for violating his parole on a
1996 drunk-driving conviction. The singer was met by his pop-star
wife, Whitney Houston, and comedian Chris Rock, who led a group of
supporters in a mock vigil that will eventually appear on Rock's
HBO comedy show.

BOND, SIR JAMES BOND
Actor Sean Connery was knighted by Britain's Queen Elizabeth on
Wednesday despite his passionate Scottish nationalism. "It's one of
the proudest days of my life," the 69-year-old original James Bond
said after the hour-long ceremony at Edinburgh's Holyrood Palace.
"It means a great deal for it to happen in Scotland."

WINSLET TRIES PRODUCING
Titanic star Kate Winslet and hubby Jim Threapleton have formed
London-based film production company Telltale Films. No details yet
on any projects but the couple expects to shoot its first movie by
2001.

****STAGE****

CHARLES NELSON REILLY LIVE
Goofy character actor, director and former Match Game panelist
Charles Nelson Reilly has opened a new one-man show, Save It for
the Stage: The Life of Reilly, at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank,
CA. Tickets are $30 each; the show runs through Aug. 27.

TAXI MEETS F-TROOP
Former Taxi star Marilu Henner, Rex Smith and F-Troop's Larry
Storch are teaming up this summer in the road company of Annie Get
Your Gun. Storch, 75, was originally scheduled to do a stand-up
show with Soupy Sales in New York but had to cancel to prepare for
Annie's July 25 opening at the Dallas Music Hall.

CRITICS CALL BIG BROTHER A BIG BORE
The critics have spoken - Wednesday night's debut of the CBS
reality series Big Brother was b-o-r-i-n-g. The Toronto Sun's Jim
Slotek writes: "I hereby take back everything negative I said about
Survivor and nominate it for a Peabody Award." USA Today went so
far as to say the "dopily lethargic" debut could kill the reality
trend overnight. Still, the ratings were impressive - buoyed by a
Survivor lead-in, Big Brother killed the competition with a 13.5
rating. The second episode of Big Brother scored an 8.2 rating
Thursday night, trailing closely behind NBC's Friends rerun in the
8 pm/ET slot. On the bright side: Brother's rating was 39 percent
higher than last week's CBS rerun of Diagnosis Murder. On the dark
side: Thursday night's viewership for the much-hyped Brother fell
39 percent from Wednesday night's debut episode.

EBERT PICKS PARTNER?
Roger Ebert's No. 1 choice as a replacement critic for late partner
Gene Siskel is believed to be fellow Chicago Sun-Times columnist
Richard Roeper. Roeper, who's known Ebert for about 10 years, has
served as guest co-host on Ebert and the Movies several times in
the past few weeks. An announcement on who will get the coveted
co-host seat is believed to be imminent.

SURVIVOR CONTESTANT HATCHES LAWSUIT
Survivor contestant Richard Hatch is suing the state of Rhode
Island for releasing details of his April arrest on child-abuse
charges to the National Enquirer. Hatch, 39, was arrested last
April just two days after returning from the filming of the CBS
series.

ESPN PREPS GAME SHOW
ESPN is close to completing a deal with Who Wants to Be a
Millionaire exec producer Michael Davies for a sports trivia quiz
show to be called Two-Minute Drill. Game show vet Andrew Golder
(Win Ben Stein's Money) is shepherding Drill as exec producer along
with Davies.

ABC'S LATEST BUZZ
ABC plans to add a Buzz Lightyear adventure series and a show about
a boy and his dog to its Saturday morning lineup this fall. The Toy
Story prequel will feature the voices of former Seinfelders Patrick
Warburton as Buzz and Wayne Knight as the Evil Emperor Zurg.

GUMBEL'S LOOSE LIPS
A guest on last Thursday's The Early Show is calling for an apology
from Bryant Gumbel after the host of the CBS morning show appeared
to be making a profane comment about him on the air. An unexpected
camera shift supposedly caught Gumbel mouthing "What a [expletive]
idiot" following the tense interview with Family Research Council
spokesman Robert Knight. A CBS spokeswoman said Gumbel was "making
a casual remark of some sort" but that it was unclear what he said.

REAL WORLD STAR IN HOT WATER
Julie Stoffer, the 20-year-old Mormon resident of MTV's Real World
New Orleans, might get thrown out of Brigham Young University for
living in a house with members of the opposite sex. "Our concern is
what happened in that environment," BYU spokeswoman Carrie Jenkins
said. "What were the male-female interactions, and what was the
appropriateness of those interactions?"

TWIN PEAKS DISASTER
The Mar-T Cafe, the North Bend, WA, restaurant made famous on Twin
Peaks, suffered $250,000 in damages after a robber broke in and set
the building on fire early Sunday morning. The building's owner
says he hopes to be back in business in time for the third annual
Twin Peaks Festival in August.

COMEDY CENTRAL GOES TO THE DOGS
Robert Smigel, the man behind Late Night With Conan O'Brien's
potty-mouthed puppet Triumph the Insult Dog, will write and produce
a new half-hour show for Comedy Central set to debut later this
year. The as-yet-unnamed show will feature animated shorts, puppets
and animals, possibly including Triumph and Smigel's Saturday Night
Live creations "Ambiguously Gay Duo" and "Fun With Real Audio."

MORE COMEDY CENTRAL
Comedy Central is developing a new animated series, Urbania,
centering around a 4-foot 10-inch breakdancer named Squatty and a
phone-sex operator named Juisto. Series creator Justin Bua is a
classically trained painter and former graffiti artist who spent 12
years as a professional breakdancer.
